lol that's so Ukraine. Welcome Euro fans! Just unzip your pants now and prepare to bend over.

Speaking of 'Arena Lviv', it would have been nice of them to finish the stadium before 'opening' it.

Same with Olimpiysky in Kyiv - when they said they "finished" the stadium, they truly meant just the stadium. Everything around the actual building was still unfinished.

The roof is not finished on one side. None of the suites are finished, none of the concessions, the facade isn't finished, there are still 2 cranes on site!

Karpaty won't be playing there. They have free reign at Ukraina and it's more centrally located than Arena Lviv. Perhaps FK Lviv will play there, but more than likely it's going to be a white elephant.

You have got to be f'n kidding me. What a bunch of retards. Fck Ukraine honestly, fck Ukraine/Russia and all those backwards thinking retards. You build a gorgeous new arena on the outskirts of the city that the main club won't even use....brilliant!!!!

Is that for real? Karpaty has a great fan base and a full brand new stadium would be great for Ukrainian football.

Brand new stadiums no longer surprise anyone in Ukraine. Look, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Lviv, even Sumy have a new stadium or about to have one.

To have a new stadium is not enough. Being able to fill it and otherwise utilize it is the key here.

Ya but you actually have to use the stadium, not just let it sit there.

Attendance figures are better in each of those cases (no clue about Sumy)

The new stadiums are a huge factor is making football go from fringe drunk crowd to social highlight. It's not about surprising people, it's about having a nice stadium, or having a concrete Soviet dump where nobody wants to attend.

from what it sounds like, the relationship of stadiuma to ukraine sounds similar to italy and their fascist era stadiums.

Probably. The culture change that took place at Metalist was dramatic. I had a discussion with a Fiorentina fan. He was skeptical about whether it would increase attendance in Italy, but after I told him about Metalist, he was intrigued.

I want an explanation as to why Lviv decided it would be better to build a nice new expensive stadium outside the city instead of renovating Ukraina Stadium? Is that land on Uniseco World Heritage list or are they just really that dumb?

and weren't they going to build like a special bus or rail line that took you directly there from the center? lol this is a joke, Karpaty not playing there LOL!!!!

Re: The Will they or won't they, Ukraine-Poland 2012?

Let me disagree with you there. You must have never seen a stadium with capacity of 100,063 filled by 110,000 people. That was Respublicanskiy stadium in Kyiv (Olimpiysky today) in November of 1986 against Dinamo Moskva. Yours truly was there. Or the 105,000 against Fiorentina in 1989. I wasn't there but I saw it on the TV screen.

According to you this was a concrete dump (it was) where no one wanted to be.

Going to go out on a limb and say something changed since then 1989.

Not for the 95% of Ukrainian people. As poor as ever. You are suggesting the premise of people having more other things to do. But truly - that would not be true for most of them.

Well then go ahead and pose a theory why only a few hundred people want to show up for football games today, and when nice stadiums appear you get 30k.

Wow we have seen it all. Discussing stadium attendance in 2011 and justifying his arguments with stats from a game in the late 80s.

In the 1980s English football was full of hooliganism, tragedy, drunkeness... now it is corporate, family oriented, highly regulated, all seated super attended league. But no, nothing has changed..

Re: The Will they or won't they, Ukraine-Poland 2012?

It's easy - the players in Soviet times did not ride Mazeratis, took trams and trolleybuses like everyone else, swept up their base when it was their turn, did not make 10 times a regular person's salary in one match (which is fine in the Western world where even a regular person can make a living somewhat). There were no primadonnas, there were no starlets, there were no wankers on those teams.
