Is there a more spoiled fanbase in MLS than the Houston Dynamo's?

Seriously! I feel a little bad for also those KC fans that crammed the Lance this evening but in the end it's probably good marketing: keep them wanting more and don't give it all away in the first year of the rebrand and new stadium! But consider someone who started following the Dynamo when they moved to Houston in '06:

    2006: MLS Cup Champions
2007: MLS Cup Champions; CCC semifinalist (in an epic series)
    2008: Conference Semifinalist
    2009: Conference Finalist
    2010: missed playoffs
2011: at least MLS Cup Finalist

And next year they get this!

    Construction photos here.

So, one year without the playoffs and at least Conference Finalists 4 years out of 6. Now another trip to MLS Cup.

There's gonna be a time when they end up sucking for a few years like every other MLS team has to, right? That's gonna be one hell of a come down.

(In all seriousness though I don't resent them one bit. Like many Canadians the DynaQuakes were the closest I had to a team in MLS pre-2007. And their fan base has always seemed strong enough to easily weather a longish dry spell. I just don't think I'm ever gonna be able to feel sorry for them.)

Does that mean Quakes fans are the most screwed over in MLS?

    Yes.

If we win the Cup, when we open the Stadium next year maybe? But you gotta say LA has been pretty spoiled as well.

And lucky. They get handed a championship quality team and this season they get sent to the weaker Eastern Conference. If they were still in the Western Conference they would have finished fifth and would have been a wildcard team, but in the Eastern Conference they place second.

However, you have to give them props for showing up in numbers and the organization for maintaining the onfield standards reasonably high.

This thread is why I would have preferred Kinnear get the USMNT job instead of Klinsmann.

    Well do they currently have:
    1) A city that international stars want to come to and play for
    2) Does the owner have deep pockets that can get multiple DP's
    3) Is the stadium easily accessible by public transportation that the the star player uses but fans make excuses about.
    4) Is the stadium one of the better soccer specific stadiums in MLS if not north america.
    5) Does the team get hyped up by ESPN everytime they play
    6) Does the team routinely have empty seats and call it a sellout or near sellout

    That is a spoiled fanbase

Is an organization that is run well really spoiling the fanbase. If you look at the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, and Pittsburgh Steelers of the nfl, they usually have good teams year in and year out. They have a very good front office and very smart people making the hard decisions. Plus the fans can trust their team and stick with them thru thick and thin.
On the other hand you have a team like the Washington Redskins who have a somehwat impatient and meddlesome owner who makes dumb decisions and a fanbase that expects winning. Is having a smart ownership and front office spoiling a fanbase?

Difference is that the Browns were a horrible team when they were moved to Baltimore and the Ravens were pretty bad the first 4 seasons and it wasn't until Modell was forced out that the team really turned it around. Houston sprung into being with all the pieces in place.

    7) Do the international stars that come to the club actually come there for soccer or to enjoy the city and collect a paycheck
    8) Does the team have an ownership that is using the team as a marketing tool more so than running it as an actual soccer club
    9) Is that team named after a product
    10) Does the team dismiss official competitions in favor of friendly tournaments
    11) Does the front office have a history of screwing over it's most loyal fans
    12) Does the team have an empty Trophy case and a history of failure

You have your definition of 'spoiled' all wrong.

I wasnt alluding completely to the Red Bulls, with the exception of the public transportation comment. But I was pointing out that the bigger market teams have a lot of advantages that smaller market fans would love. I remember Robert Pires saying he would not play for Philly because it was not a "beautiful city."

Big market cities watch good players when healthy at all their home games. Other teams get 2 home games to watch the more "talented" and "established" players even if they are old.

Spoiled? Perhaps. But I'll take it.

And for the 1st ten years of MLS, supporting a pro soccer team in Houston meant driving across town to a high school football stadium to watch a bad D III team.

Are you new to being an NFL fan? I can remember when all these teams (Raves when they were the Browns) sucked. They didn't call the Tampa Bay-Green Bay game the 'Bay of Pigs Game' for nothing.

I can't believe the roller coaster of year the Dynamo have had. After watching stolen game (via questionable PK) and then getting thoroughly whipped by Chivas here in Carson I wan't sure what to think of the rest of the year.
We will see how they perform against MLS, the refs, the home team, LA power grid and whatever else is thrown at us. Can another "massive" Texas underdog come to LA's home and win again (like UT against USC a few years ago)? Let's give he11!!

What he is leaving out is being so deprived for live soccer with your city's name on the jersey you go on road trips to Ft. Worth to support a USL Div-III team, how pathetic is that life right.
Or get shitfaced in the parking lot of said high school stadium with your lil' brother and wondering circa '99 when in the hell is a local owner going to tap into this incredible soccer market.
There are the few of us that are living the dream. We followed USL league play and MLS play, like Clint Mathis hanging 5 on Dallas or the Raging Bull Bulgarian Stoitchkov feeding a 19 year old Beasley. When Tampa n Miami got contracted, Lamar Hunt grew ill, Dallas was playing at a high school stadium, having teams in Portland, Seattle, Philly and Houston was a pipe dream!
AEG strung along the SJ folks and we knew how shitty that was...4 months later us in Houston just helped Garber see supporter culture in a new light.

When you have a good manager all things become possible. And when you have supportive management above them it is even more so.

And think of the players Kinnear has lost over the last few years........DeRo, Clark, Holden. International players all.

The guy can flat out manage. His DP's have been questionable but it is hard to tell who makes decisions on these things. Most teams that dabble in DP's get stung half the time.

You were far more dedicated that I was. I was more along the lines of "Who's playing the Burn this week? Ok, that's my favorite team then."

    "Dallas signed Alain Sutter?"

Yep, compare that with New England. Who lost the same amount of good players but never managed to replace them.

Yea, I meant outdoor soccer. Should've been more specific. Though the Hotshots had some good teams. We're so spoiled! :)

Yeah - we have had one "DP" that made $150k per year. We have had MAYBE one player signed that anyone had heard of before he joined the team. We are soooo spoiled. Or is it that our FO and coaching staff is just, well, better.
