Is Heaps Another Bust?

Assuming you mean Robbie Keane not Roy, I strongly doubt nat'l team, EPL, and World Cup veterans like those 3 DP's in LA who could find jobs outside MLS, would even think about playing in Foxboro, aka MLS's Island of Misfit Toys. We probably should drop our expectations for offseason acquisitions to projects either too young (Assengue), too old (Domi, Dabo, Jank), too injury prone (Caraglio, Badilla) or too crazy (Lekic) for legitimate teams to consider.

 

But the facilities... we've got plush locker rooms!!

And dozens of shops for the wife and kids!!!!

Would you please explain why you think resigning Joseph is a dumb move?

I don't like that he is a DP. I don't think Shalrie is of that stature anymore. It could prevent them from signing someone better for that slot, but it does free up a lot of allocation money.

However, I'll give the Revs credit for re-signing one of their best players.

 

Well he may not be dp level at his old position but moving him to dmid as you suggested or even cb, may fill one of the many holes this team has. He's the revs captain and with reis provides the desperately needed senior leadership this team needs.

 

Yeah, I think it's a good move. I can't really justify complaining about them overpaying for a player haha I've spent the better part of two years complaining that they have underpaid for everything.

 

He can do whatever he wants. I can also tell him his opinion isn't worth spit and to go pound sand.

Soccer Doc the question is not whether re-signing [note that "resigning" may not mean what you think it means] Shalrie is a dumb move [no it isn't; and no one would consider simply re-signing a still reasonable in quality player, for a year or two, a "dumb move"] but whether letting go of four highly to moderately talented players only to then take a rapidly fading force and make him your DP is a dumb move [yes, it is a very dumb move].

 

I must have missed it, my apologies, but who are the "four highly to moderately talented players" the Revs let go?

The part I'm curious about is how one can use the phrase "highly talented" in context of the 2011 Revolution.

 

Relative to the Revolution, players of high talent we had last year were Feilhaber, Shalrie [dwindling through the year, but still there in key moments], and Caraglio [struggling at first and then on a strong upswing]. Perovic, uninjured, as well. Zerka was of good talent. Lekic was of modest talent, or of good talent undermined by craziness, or of mediocre talent inspired by craziness [it ain't clear ].

Ok, thanks for clarifying, I thought so. Well you forgot Reis too. So:
Reis- signed.
Shalrie- signed.
Feilhaber- signed (more to work with this year hopefully).
Caraglio- they're working on it (3 goals but young+potential, fair point by you)
Zerka- they're working on it (he showed well, fair point by you)
Perovic- was a rare good int'l signing, but doubt he'll be back.
Lekic- nut job who didn't produce, my opinion: good riddance.

So really it comes down to re-signing Caraglio, Zerka, Perovic and Lekic.

 

This rapidly fading force has 20 goals/14 assists in the last 3 seasons (most of which was NOT playing forward).

While some of Joseph's abilities may have declined (it's tough to know for sure, since the talent around him has declined), it's clear that some of his other abilities have dramatically improved. Earlier in his career, he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn when he got an open shot.

 

The majority of his goals come from the PK spot. And he still can't shoot either, his non-PK goals are mainly headers off of corners or set pieces.

 

And how does he rate compared to the rest of the league?

There is certainly something to the effect from the other players around him. However, truly great players can usually raise the level of even awful players to a decent status.

I like Shalrie, and I'm glad he is back. Trying to claim that he isn't declining, is like pissing into the wind. So, I would offer you a towel, but I'm sure you wouldn't take it because I'm "too negative".
