I'm not familiar with Latvia's program. I just wonder if the guy was a strong coach, why wouldn't they have hired him first?
He's made a name of himself with the two Gagarin Cup wins, I guess he just wasn't a hot item prior to his KHL success. Sochi was obviously out of the question because he was under contract. Anyway good for Nolan, I hope he can get another NHL job he's a good guy. Saw a piece about him on Real Sports (I think?) a while ago and he rose up from a terribly hard life.
Anyone checking out the Gagarin Cup Final at all? It's been some epic stuff. Watch till the end for some NHL throwback.
IIHF WC started yesterday. Russia 5 - 0 Switzerland , Belarus 1 - 6 USA. This is basically a home tournament for Russia is the first game is a sign of things to come.
Canada pulled a Russia in their first game and lost to France (beat Slovakia yesterday 4-1). Latvia also beat Finland 3-2.
Classical Russian win; dependable goaltending and relying on superior individual skills to win. Belarus 4-3 Switzerland France 5-3 Slovakia
The Russians just kicked the shit out of the US. The US defense played horrible, and from the American perspective the one hope is that they take a lesson from this going forward in the tournament to be more sharp and precise. Vasilevsky made a couple of really good saves but mostly the Russians just kept the US to easy shots. I'm not taking too much from this game because just like last year, when the US lost to Russia and then annihilated them in the rematch, anything can happen in one game.
Absolutely but Znarok can take a bit of a breather after this one. btw one of Russland's goals came on a 3 on 0 break, the hell.
Russia wins it 5-2 over Finland. 5 on 5 Finland outskated Russia but lacked the skill to be truly dangerous, Russia's PP made the difference.
Finally, a Russian player. http://www.sbnation.com/nhl/2014/6/27/5830434/nikolay-goldobin-san-jose-sharks-nhl-draft-2014
Two bits. 1. IIHF has granted S. Korea a place in the 2018 games. Uhhhh, they better have the body bags ready to go unless the host team naturalizes a good number of Canadians (they already have if I'm mistaken). 2. 2015 WC has been moved from Ukraine to Poland. Interestingly enough the Poles have a little hockey history behind them; they've scored wins over both the USSR and Czechoslovakia in two different tournaments in two different decades...and in the latter case in Prague.
