The game was actually very good until the last 5 minutes of the third period when it was only 3-0. Unfortunately, Ukraine has absolutely no offensive talent as the old-timers have finally finished their careers. It is sad to see what has happened to ukrainian hockey
That's because without Russian coaching and backing there is no Ukrainian hockey. There's no such thing as a Ukrainian school of hockey so without Russia the sport is doomed in the country.
It's actually quite questionable. All Ukrainian hockey needs is money. The money would have allowed players like Babenko, Shvydkyi, Zubrus, Zherdev, Vishnevskyi, Mikhnov, etc, to stay in Ukraine until the NHL.
It has nothing to do with Russian coaching. Everything to do with no arenas, no schools, no coaching (Ukrainian or otherwise), no investment in the sport.
They are now starting to build arenas and schools. but they are still about 5-10 years from truly competing.
All the ice rings disappeared for some reason. My dad always told me that when he was a teenager in the mid 70's they would always have ice rings around in the winter where you could play hockey, even leisurely. Nowadays you're lucky to find one or two, that are used just for regular skating.
Hockey isn't particularly popular in parts of Russia south of Moscow. If you look at the distribution of teams in the KHL and where most of the national team comes from, it's from Moscow, north of Moscow and Siberia.
I really hope the Leafs get 6th this year, play Capitals and smash them lol BS division seeding rules
Last year the 3rd vs 6th place in the East Conference's 1st round was, perhaps, the most exciting match-up out there.
By all accounts the US completely outplayed the Russians, but their goalie played better than the American goalie, who was poor.
1. Rc I only saw the highlights once but it didn't seem like soft goaltending by the American's part, I could be wrong however. 2. Russia beat Finland today 3-1. 3. Ovy with a double, he;s now a VERY safe bet to win the Richard. I'm so happy to see him back at his best, and hopefully his form carries over to his international play.
