Hey guys, sorry for not posting so much ! I have come here in need of some help. I am going to be a senior at my High School next year and wanna tryout for the soccer team (Varsity). I have never really played competitive soccer except for a few summer leagues. Anyone got any tips for me to get prepared for them. Try outs are next fall. Thanks!
Work hard be a team player, show up early stay late, connect with the other guys basically evryone makes it never heard of a senior getting cut
Hopefully im not the first one. My high school won the state championship 2 years ago and 2 of the players went on to play at UNH. Idc if i sit bench, i just wanna make it
I played for my high school for four years as a goalkeeper. What position do you play? Just some things off the top of my head - if its a small town you live in, high school teams tend to be very cliquy. What I mean by that is that there are usually a group of 7-9 guys that are VERY close because they grew up together, and they pretty much play between themselves and control what goes on, even to the point of having influence over the coach. Their parents have a lot of say as well (in terms of who plays, etc). Sometimes its tough breaking in if you're a newcomer.
Depends what position your playing. My first piece of advice is try to figure out how you are with the ball. If your a good dribbler and can hold the ball make a mental note of it. Be honest with yourself not everyone is ''awesome'' at it. If you feel you are better at watching the ball and can understand the way an attack is progressing make sure you make a note of that as well because it will determine where you should really be playing. One thing I hated about HS soccer was that they put any player anywhere. It was amateur hour. The other piece of advice is start running/jogging. Get your stamina up as much as you possibly can. Starting out a regiment like that helps you in other aspects of life as well. You make a goal and you meet it. Again be realistic. If you can only run a half mile then run it and then by the end of the week aim for running a mile, so on and so forth. Alot of football is not about skill but conditioning and fundamentals. If you are looking to go for a defensive position; ask yourself whether you want to be on the wing where you will be shutting down crossing attacks or in the middle where you are expected to go out and meet the attacker head on. There are different ways to play defense, you can play the traditional back to goal defending or you can also play the ''Imma get you **********h'' play. Meaning you run with the attacker and wait for him to make a mistake while not giving up ground. For midfield you really need good stamina, doesn't matter much in HS but if you plan on playing in college GET IT UP! (That's what she said). You have choices gallore in midfield, you can be a defensive mid where you are more attracted to the defensive side of the field majority of time or an attacking mid which is the opposite, for a defensive mid you need to be good at intercepting the ball which requires you to read the movement of attack and the players and you also need to tackle hard and clean. Standing and sliding are important. For attacking mid you need balance, agility and some sort of speed, not to mention dribbling skills. You would be expected to draw attention to yourself in order for the strikers to break through the CB's and then with vision be able to pass/lob the ball. For a striker it's pretty easy, you need strength, good short passing skills and a calm mind. When your playing it's easy to get lost in the adrenaline mode, when your a striker you need to slow the game down in your mind to be able to plan out your options, do you want to pass the ball to the left in order for the defender to move so you can go past him to receive the ball back and shoot? or do you want to pass the ball back and re-organize for a longer attacking option? You have to be able to think instantly. It's something that comes with patience and practice. These arn't the only things, there are ALOT of things that go on in football. There are many different styles and then you have to deal with coaches and their egos. Most important out of ANYTHING is focus on yourself. Don't think about others playing style, the only thing you want is to further yourself on the pitch and off the pitch. Don't ever consider anything a failure, look at it as a learning experience.
Conditioning is everything. If you can run relatively fast and for a long time, you can make the team, even if you've never played football in your life.
Omg thanks you so much for that. I really want to play striker as a target man because im 6"1' but now idk. Idk what i should play honestly
Here is the roster from this past season: http://www.ccsuvt.org/ehs/athletics/viewSchedule.php?schedule=420 10 people are leaving. 9 seniors and 1 junior because he was a foreign echange student. I think i can still make it, im really good friends with the captains for next year and i think i have a chance if i condition all summer
DONT FOCUS ON SKILL FOCUS ON SPEED, AGILITY, and stuff like that. i suggest run a mile or two each day, and every month add another mile per day. a mile should only take about 6-7 minutes per day, 2 miles 15-18 min? thats just me. Oh and during tryouts make sure to stand out, do alot of passing. Dont try to dribble past all the defenders while playing. Also, make sure to be aggressive, when you see the coach watching you knock the other guys around a bit, they will see that you want to fight for the ball. ANOTHER BIG THING. Dont come looking like Jabba the hut. Come to tryouts with a fresh haircut..add some gel and shit. XD BE ON TIME. AND SHOW SPORTSMANSHIP. I made freshman team by following this stuff. Glad I could offer some advice
Thanks man, that really helped. Ne brini se, i got my Dzeko cut . I think my problem is when i get the ball i cant think fast enough and i end up losing the ball
Like everyone else said, completely forget about skill. If you're honestly wanting to just MAKE the team, then the ONLY thing you should focus is stamina and speed. Forget about everything else. Forget about passing, forget about shooting, forget about dribbling, forget about all the rules of soccer and just focus on how to run.
I am ready. Im gonna run 1 mile 6 out of 7 days a week in june and half of july then do 2 miles. I still will work on footwork during the afternoons (juggling, passing, etc) I also have one of those exercise bike things and im gonna do that for half an hour each day
As I said take mental notes on what you do well. Then go from there. Right now your just trying out for the team and such, you can always impress the coaches later when you figure out what youll be playing.
Oh and another thing coaches like to see that you love soccer, so wear your nicest jersey. Start with defense. Most americans play midfield - forward they dont focuse on defense too much. Once you get the ball dont overthink it or anything just get your head up quick trap it and out of the corners of you eyes youll defenitly see somone making a run. Or calling your name is good too. Before tryouts start introduce yourself to the other players and even the coach. Help him take out his equipment. I know it sounda like sucking up but it will work trust me haha
I got a similar situation next year too: So I'm going into my Junior next year in high school, but I'll be at college taking classes really to get away from the high-school dumb asses, but I can still try out for sports. Last year I had a tibula/fibula open fracture which put me out of all sports for about 6 months and that was from soccer. I took a break this year, and next year I hope to try and make either JV or Varsity, the catch is though my high school is very competitive at fudbal. More so then any other sport. But again, I don't have much experience and I would of been out for two years.
Improve your conditioning and make sure you can endure the full game without stamina issues and stoppages. Work on some exercises on your calves, biceps, etc. to avoid muscle injuries and cramps. Just try practicing with a ball daily for a few hours and don't be scared to attempt different things, it can only help you. Good luck.
Well problem is that two of the 3 captains play defense.. and midfield i dont have the condition for, thats why i wanna play like a forward role
Passing: Make sure you know how to pass a ball. This seems the most simple thing in football, but when you don't know how to handle the pressure, even the most simple passes won't reach their destination. Also, learn how to dribble short distances and how to pass without looking at your feet. This will help you alot, because you'll be aware of your opponents alot better and it gives you enough time to scan the field and find a way to pass to one of your team mates without fearing to lose the ball to your opponents. Stamina: Pretty straight forward, make sure you get in shape by running a few miles each day. If you can't last a whole game then you're useless for your team. Strength: Really depends on your position on the pitch, but a little more strength really comes in handy when you're fighting for a ball or you're trying to clear a corner by heading the ball. You'll have much more self esteem knowing that you won't be a simple push over. Speed: Like above, really depends on your position, but adding a bit more speed to your game can't hurt. Dribbling: Really important. You should know how to keep the ball close to you when you're making runs or you're trying to find team mates to play the ball to. Also, like passes, learn how to dribble without looking at your feet. The best way to learn this is practice. Get a feeling for the ball, improve your touch etc. Keep calm: Learn how to deal with pressure. I had this problem a few years ago too, I was standing out in trainings and when playing with my friends, but I always seem to choke on the pitch. Find a way to calm yourself before you're playing a game. It will improve your game alot. Most important thing, have fun, no matter what: Remember, it's just a game. Enjoy it while playing it.
After we gave you all this advice you better make the team nigguh! Otherwise we will ALL be highly disappointed. HIGHLY!!! jk
Wow holy shit thanks alot, very good tips. I was talking to some friends from the team and they said the coach dosent give a shit about running, he cares most about skill. It made me ********ing nervous lol
