This is not about womens soccer...but this article list St. Louis United as the official name of Coopers women's team. If that is true then one would have to believe that the MLS team will take the St. Louis United title also and that it is not just the name of his group.

It also mentioned that they will play in spring 2009. I wonder where??? Collinsville perhaps?

On a side note, why is Ronoldinho's picture on the article.

Interesting. I read a couple months ago that since there was already a United in the MLS that we wouldn't be named United, but this is certainly interesting. We all think that if not a MLS stadium the woman will play at AB Soccer Park.

And that is a pic of Marta, although it is a terrible pic of her. Certainly looks like Ronaldihno at first glance.

Yeah, I know, just a joke. Soccer park is the only place I can think of too. Maybe SLU, but that might cost a little more.

I would think Cooper will brand all the teams (mens, womens, youth) similarly with names and logos.

If the owners group is named United, the womens team is named United then more likely then not they will try to name a mens team United.
I can't believe that MLS would allow another United, but who's knows with MLS. MLS might want something original or something european like
    St. Louis Barca:eek:

United isn't the sort of team name that there can only be one of. Like you said, you never know with MLS, but since they allowed Red Bull New York, Chivas USA, FC Dallas and Toronto FC I can't imagine they would have a problem with another United.

Isn't it obvious? The league wants Cooper to expand his ownership group because Cooper already has a conditional agreement to sign the Brazilian, and Ronaldinho ain't cheap. ;)

I don't mind the team name "united." I can't even count all the uniteds in Britain. There are Manchester, Leeds, Westham, Ebbsfleet, Sheffield, and others. To me, another united would be great and I think it would go well with St. Louis.

I like the fact that we have united team, as our nation's capital soccer team. Couldn't it be the athletics or AC or SC or Sporting St. Louis. Or just the traditional American mascot name for the team. I just think long term it would be easier for marketing purposes for our teams to be either slightly different with brand names or have names that are similar to what American consumers are used to.

Plus, is the women's team and the men's team are both going to be United, isn't that going to cause some confusion???

Only if the women on your team all look like Marta

St. Louis United has united the St. Louis Youth Soccer System and the St. Louis Metro area (the Missouri and Ill. side). I think United is awesome because it means something. AC for Athletic Club only if the St. Louis team starts a basketball team, a futsal team, a volleyball team, and a badminton team. Clubs in Europe that have Athletic Clubs are actually large clubs with a lot of subdivisions and soccer is just the most popular. It wouldn't really mean anything if we were just a soccer athletic club if feel. There are huge threads on this.

I didn't realize we were getting an MLS team. You all make it sound likes it's a done deal. We may not get an MLS team for a few more years....if ever. But I definitely wouldn't bet on it.

Why do you always have to kill every thread with your "we're not getting a team" pessimism?

I think United is a fine name - by far the best suggestion I've heard. There are multiple (city name) FCs in MLS, so I don't think another United will be all that confusing.

    *Wet Blanket Alert*

I think the MLSnet article just listed the name of the investor groups as the name of the teams. The NY/NJ team was called Sky Jersey Blue. If you go the WPS website, the only teams with names are the Boston Breakers and the Washington Freedom. I will bet that the Women's STL team is not named United.

Which brings me back to the point that it has been said that with 1 United in the league there won't be a second. I like the name United, but those are the (apparent) facts.

But, if we want this to be a naming thread, I will throw in St. Louis Knights or AC St. Louis again.

My bet is on United. There are no facts indicating that there can't be 2 United in the league that I have seen.

I know I read it somewhere, maybe in an interview with Cooper? Anyone else remember reading that the MLS wanted only one United? Anyways, whatever the name it can't be worse the the Emerald City Greens. Or Real Salt Lake!

Is Emeral City Greens really a proposed name? I heard that rumor, where did that come from? I'm ok with United. Good name, there are probably better but definately much worse options as you alluded to.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the name, MLS has the worst team names out of any major US sports league. It's like MLS is having a competition to see who has the worst team name.

For those too lazy to click, here is the aforementioned comment by Timmerman:

"Cooper says he hasn’t thought about a name because he doesn’t want to jinx anything. He did say at one point that it would be a traditional name, meaning one that ended in “s” and that it would be St. Louis something, rather than River City or some other geographic identification. The group right now is St. Louis Soccer United, but someone at the league office told me that would be a problem since there already is a United in the league. The same probably goes for Real and FC."

I guess FC Dallas and Toronto FC are different? We could be United St. Louis......kidding people! St. Louis Knights it is! :D

I don't really see anything wrong with "United Saint Louis" if it can't be "Saint Louis United" because of the DC issue. I really like the United aspect. I guess it would be wrong to suggest a different name that means the same thing ... "Saint Louis Unified" or "Unified Saint Louis." For short we could call them "The Saint Louis Unit." Our long name could be "The Knights of Unified Saint Louis." Fun stuff.

But, I am fine with Saint Louis Knights too. But, like everyone else, I just want a team.

That was sort of my thought too.

Of course, we could take a page from RSL, and do something completely a$$ backwards, and name the team "Eintracht St. Louis." That way we'd still have United in the title, we'd tip our hat to the German heritage in the city, and we'd stay in line with MLS' unspoken rule of making decisions that make absolutely no sense.

On another note, if the team name is the "knights," then I think we should consider "The Paladins" as a name for a supporters' group.

A Paladin is not only considered a knight who fights for a specific cause (a good thing for a supporters group), but also one of the 12 knightly champions in attendance on Charlemagne.

I think this reference would be a clever way for us to be the "12th man."

I went there back in the summer. I got banished back to the Forbidden Forest past the Sickly Swamps. It was deemed too nerdy and most people would associate it with WoW than soccer, which might be right.

Not as nerdy as being a lvl 34 paladin though!
