I want to say 165 mph in a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, but I'm not quite sure. I know the speedometer was buried and I checked with the dashboard RADAR unit.
99 mph in my 1999 Jeep Cherokee. State Police got me for that one.

Back in high school I got my then 14 year-old Volvo up to 102 before it was shaking so much I thought it would fall apart.

Just over 150mph in my brand new Astra VX-R between junction 6 and 5 of the M61, it could have gone faster but I had to slow down to go down the slip road. It used a lot of petrol so I'm not gonna bother again.

Only 17 but when I was 15 in driver's ed at Sears I was going on my first highway lesson in a Honda Civic EX and the instructor wasn't a very good teacher. While he was teaching me to make a lane change he told me to accelerate a little bit and get past some Toyota Tacoma.

I did it perfectly and then he calmly told me to look at the speedometer, we were going 90 mph in a student driver car (only like my fifth time to be on the road). He was so zoned in on how I should make a smooth lane change that we both didn't realize how fast we were going. It was exhilarating.

I've never been faster than that and the only thing that I think I would have had the chance to go faster in is my friend's old Eclipse Spider or my cousin's Miata.

I once caught a taxi in Germany, going to the airport, and we were driving a normal 120 km/hr on the autobahn when we ended up behind some lady going probably 100 km/hr. So, showing off my German, I said to the driver, "Sie geht zu langsam" (She is going too slowly). He misunderstood and thought I said "Sie gehen zu langsam" (You are going too slowly). He then accelerated to 160 - 180 km/hr and we zipped along the rest of the way.

The lesson is, don't say "she" in German!

In a Mercedes Benz C180, I drove 120 MPH on the autobahn from Mannheim to Stuttgart during the World Cup. Not the fastest car, but very solid and well built.

In my Subaru Outback, I often drive in the 95 to 100 MPH range on I-40 in the straighter parts of NC, but only when I'm driving long distance to see relatives. Tip of the hat to my Escort Passport 8500 X50.

I'm buying a bad boy Audi A4 this coming week. Should be fun. :D

Ive only broken the 120 mph barrier 4 times...

Ist time was in 1999, we were in Las Vegas with the whole family...
I stole the voucher the hotel gave pops to hold the car. Went in my room, put my suit and watch on to look older, I was 17... and the moronic bell boy gave me the truck. It was a new suburban... but it was Mexican, meaning that they didnt have the governorns that limite speed on the American versions of the truck..

I took that thing on off the strip, and took it to 125.... I was scared as hell, especially after it took forever to slow down.

Fast forward to 2002, I had a Trans AM that was stolen a few months ago, it was only a few months old, but I took it to about 135 on the 60 here in LA.

Fast forward to 07... I hit 150mph a few months ago in my Z06...

I hit 170 again on the 15 highway going to San Diego two weeks ago... that damn car still had more than anough juice, but not enough road... or balls on my part.

Althogh I do admitt it felt a whole lot safer that I thought it would... especially considereing my first two experiances..

What's the speed rating on your tires?

I have performance Continentals on my Audi. Mine are H speed, AA traction, A temp so I'm comfortable in the 130 MPH range. But unless the road is absolutely clear ahead of me, I keep it around 90 to 95. I just don't trust other drivers to check their mirrors before entering the passing lane.

This little guy has saved me a lot of money.

Ouch. I'll keep it under 130 thank you. I'd want to leave something for my wife to bury if the worst happened. ;)

When the traffic isn't bad, you can really move on I-40 between the Triad and Hickory. Of course, don't drive on a full stomach once you hit the I-40 slalom between Waynesville, NC and the TN state line.

Speaking of slalom courses, has anyone ever driven The Tail of the Dragon (Hwy 129) that borders the south edge of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park? It runs from Deal's Gap, NC across the state line into TN. The road has 318 curves within an 11 mile stretch! The last time I drove it (about five or six years ago) my wife got a serious case of vertigo. It's a wicked road.

Be careful on I-40 b/w Old Fort (exit 72, when it goes from 70mph to 55mph) and Asheville. The whole area is now a speedtrap. It used to be lots of fun in my old Corrado at night--I once did that set of chicanes at over 90mph. I moonlight during ski season at Wolf Ridge ski resort and have had quite a bit of high speed Madison County night driving in the last few months--nearly every road there is twisted to hell.

Not a record, but this past weekend on I-95 NB between Richmond and DC there was a group of cars that was running 90-100 trying to get back in time to watch the Sopranos finale.

I just saw them go by as I drove along at the legal speed limit, of course.

250 km/h (~155 mph) regularly on the Autobahn in different cars. The last one was an SLK 350.

I wouldn't call it scary, but very demanding mentally. After just 15 minutes at speeds like that, it's getting very exhausting, so I usually don't keep up speeds like that for a longer period of time. I'm too attached to life.

I think that, depending on the car you're driving and the road you're on, 160-180 km/h (~100-110 mph) is a nice and relaxed traveling speed.

You're exactly right. The car makes a big difference. I can cruise along in my new Audi at 100 mph and it feels like I'm doing 75 mph. I've driven some cars where you start losing confidence at 80+.
