Well, there are two types of licenses that you may obtain in order to coach. You can go the route of the NSCAA, or the license of the USSF. I recommend starting with the USSF license programs before moving into NSCAA. You need to get in contact with your state youth program to find out when you can take your "E" coaching course. Unless you have played at a high level, then you can obtain certain waivers to skip E. If you've played at the highest levels you can skip straight into a B license. Go to www.ussoccer.com and go to the coaching link. Somewhere in there will list the youth associations and you can find your state association's web site which should tell you the schedule of obtaining the licenses you require. I will tell you that the coaching courses are not easy. You'll be tired after you have finished, and the C - B- A courses are national courses that you have to travel to and they are quite pricy. Good luck with it though!

Once you have your E License from the youth soccer association, just start calling local clubs telling them you're looking to coach. I easily got a job doing that.

Most programs are dieing for "rec" level coaches. Most don't require E license for this either, usually travel/premier levels are the ones that require the license. If you really need to find them, simply drive around on Saturday morning til you find the field full of soccer kids, walk up to any coach and ask him who to contact. Most "rec" coaches are simply parents who said they could help. Most would love to have a coach who actually played.

I got into it without playing when I was younger. My kids started at age of 4 and I simply checked that little box on the sign up form that said I would be interested in helping out. Poof, I was a coach of 12 little 4-5 year olds!! It grew from there. I now coach U12 travel boys and have also coached U13 travel.

Its fun, keep it fun for the kids, especially the little ones!

First becoming a volunteer coach will get your foot in the door. what to do after that will become very obvious to you. You don't need a license for that.

I helped out for a U6 team(Tons of fun) this past fall, I never played the game in an organizied setting, but fell in love with it as I grew up and took up officiating. I knew a parent who needed an ast. for his U6 team and helped out, I know I'm not a great coach, but if you start out by examining other coaches and the way they practice you will learn. If you know anyone in your local rec/ayso league, that's a great place to start and learn if you like it. Coaching is a lot of responsibility. Also, there are tons of books out there on how to coach, you might want to check some of those out.
