I met thierry henry tonight at the new york knicks game at madison square garden. I spotted him at halftime talking to spike lee, who was wearing the yellow arsenal shirt, but no one in the sold out arena seemed to recognize him when he walked by i called his name but he didn't turn around during one of the breaks i went to where he was sitting and said "you are one of my favorite players, thank you for everything you've done" and i shook his hand," but i didn't get an autograph or a picture. not sure if he understood me still very cool.
Very interesting. Wasn't Henry spooted at a San Antonio Spurs game last year? So now Spike Lee is an Arsenal supporter? What about the local team Spike? Le Metrostars ??
From what I've heard, Spike's been a Gooner for years, since before MLS. Not that I have a lot of love for the guy, being a Pacers fan. As for Henry, the papers weren't kidding when they said he was on holiday!
not sure he understood you???!!!!!!! have you not heard Thierry speak English a thousand times. the man has played in the Prem for several years, for goodness' sake. He just didn't want to talk to you! LOL
Maybe he was surprised someone recognized him? But that being said my younger brother, who is on his way to being a non-world cup soccer hating ESPN anchor, would totally freak if he saw Thierry Henry or Zidane.
Did anyone see him at Nevada Smith's watching the game this morning? Wouldn't that have been cool (not for him, necessarily, but for everyone else).
It would have been cool if he'd turned up for a match in the pub. I seem to remember hearing that Vieira went to a bar (drinking Perrier water of course!) to catch one of the Arsenal games while he was in France recuperating from injury earlier this season.
Spike Lee a gooner?! Well, Michael Moore is a gooner as well guess you can't choose your clubs 'celebrity' fans. Spike was wearing our kit? Interesting. Glad to see Henry over here. I hope Parker gets traded to the NBA team in my city so I can run into Henry.
I'm not trying to get into a wind up with you but seriously, where does this rumor come from. Yes, I've heard it as well but have never had it's origin explained to me. If it's more than myth, it's rather ironic in light of the stories that supposedly OBL had plans for an attack during the 1998 WC and one of the players on his alleged "hit list" was Seaman.
It dates back to when he came over to London to study. He used to live pretty close to Highbury and used to spend his weekends watching Arsenal play.
Interesting, but take a look at this: www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/binladen/who/bio.html According to this biography that was put together for "Frontline", a PBS documentary, OBL was educated in Jeddah. It also states that all reports of trips to London, Switzerland, etc., are unfounded. Of course, the article, also says that there are not a lot of solid sources as to his early background. So...just curious.
I want to say that when I first saw the "OBL is a Gooner" rumors it was pretty much confirmed as the bin Laden family has property in London (as well as a ton in the US). He went to a game or 2 and really liked Arsenal, although I think an Arsenal S/S home top isn't the best thing to wear in the drafty caves he prefers to call home. I'm just waiting to see one of those tapes show up on Al Jazeera where he states he will "destroy all the western infidels except Sweden, as Freddie is a true Gooner"
I know I've always heard it said as "fact" but never could find a source for it. And I'm not on some mission to disprove it because somehow it lessens Arsenal, I just was curious. History is a rather large side interest of mine...in particular how what we know as factual history often comes from myth rather than actual facts. There are a couple of really good books by Richard Shenkman called "Legends, Lies and Cherished Myths of American History" in which the author debunks a lot of myth that we as Americans take for granted as factual history. Anyway, I'm rambling now. That being said, his family owned property all over, no doubt, however, I still cannot find anything that confirms OBL ever spent time in London. In fact, most biographies indicate the contrary.
It very well could be unfounded rumor, but I doubt we'll ever be able to ask OBL himself to confirm it. Right with you on the fact that history is a somewhat inaccurate study of the past. Who was it that said "History is written by the victors"?
It was Adolf Hitler, who I believe was also an Arsenal fan having been extremely impressed with Herbert Chapman's team of the 1930s.
Too true regarding OBL. As for history, I enjoy learning about it whether it was written by the victors or not. Although my politics are slightly left of center I'm not one of those types that discounts every bit of history that wasn't written by one of the "oppressed." Howard Zinn's "A Peoples' History of the U.S." is a good read though.
It's a shame that henry is not a REAL Gunners fan, or he would have been at Nevada Smith's cheering on the Arse
