So i was doing a little research about our "fearless leader" Remember this thread?http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=119176 and a bit more of McCullers' bio here: http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3118479 Somehow being an Event coordinator for a stadium qualifies you on how to run the sports organization. **Please note the following: As a result of Smith’s departure, Wagner announced that Mark McCullers will become the Interim General Manager of the organization. Wagner said, “Fortunately, we have in Mark McCullers a man who can immediately step in and manage the organization in a seamless fashion.” Any player personnel decisions will be made by Crew Head Coach Greg @$$40/3, in consultation with Hunt Sports Group. Apparently he was presiding over that whole debacle by "he who shall not be named" If that's the case, I threw a helluva Halloween party last year, can I run the crew?
Help Wanted! Morons out. The man critical in bringing GBS to the fold, is about to make another move (I hope) is not the problem. But hey, let's riot before the Expansion draft, good idea.
So lets see. MMC brings us GBS, 2 Supporters Shields, 1 USOC Runner Up, 2 CCL Quarterfinal Appearances, 1 MLS Cup, instrumental in helping form the Nordeke, and keeping attendance at a competitive pace for a city that really doesnt care about sports besides American football and you want him gone after 2 weeks into the great Crew Diaspora of 2010. Lets slow down and see what he can do. Now, if it backfires (and it may very well do that) then lets fire him and RW in one fell swoop of the axe.
Agreed. Though I want the axe to come down on RW now. Next off season could be the season of rolling heads. We shall see.
Exactly. I suppose the other option would have been to keep those guys around at a year older and with GBS's salary, but you saw the letter detailing the cuts that would have been made. And really? Cut the young guys in order to keep GBS around for one, maybe two more years? I think it's safe to say that our opponents had us pretty much "figured out." They knew how to beat us. It was time to change the deck of cards. I don't think McCullers is the problem. We HAD to have roster turnover. Yeah, it sucks, but it's pro sports. It is what it is.
Thread started by an idiot, please close. MM is the single best GM in MLS and arguably in all of sports. The man has done more with less than any GM I can remember.
Ok, that might be a little much from you Mrs.McCullers. Im still partial to Jamey "I Kick It Root Down" Rootes myself.
Post inserted by an idiot. Please remove. McMullers is a mediocre GM at best with little class and a penchant for making poor decisions regarding the team's future with draft picks, trades, and roster additions. I don't think you fire him just yet, but these moves MUST show immediate turn around... only because he has turn the fans around and bent us over.
Heh... I'm with Timon {sigh} This is so much fun. I haven't seen this much silly angst since Fulham a couple years ago. What's the difference? Well, Crew fans are a helluva lot more literate {than the FFC fans on their Official board}. The one thing I dont want is McCullers out. He's no Jamey Rootes, for sure, but that's a tough act to live up to. He may not even be the best GM in MLS but he's a helluva lot better than the guy who fired Sigi at LA.. who only redeemed his props because he died early. Also recall that we didnt really rate Rootes all that great.. until we got Jim Smith to compare him to.
Ok, maybe my comments were a touch over the top. But really I do get a bit tired of people getting on here with these "we've hit a rough spot so let's fire everybody" threads. I will still stand with my statement that MM is the best GM in MLS right now. If you can look at what MM has done for this franchise and what he has brought us as fans and even have the thought of his being fired cross your mind welllllll...sorry but you are clueless. But "in all of sports" was probably a bit much. Jamey was the man when he was here and it seems he is getting things done down in Texas these days. As odd and uneven as the history of the Crew has been we have been lucky enough to have had two incredibly skilled GM's with the dark ages that were Jim Smith in between. I would, however, say that the best GM in MLS to date was Peter Wilt. And no this isn't Ms. McCullers (although that post did sound like it) but I will gladly state that I am a fan of the guy.
Hey, I backed off the comment - jeeze. But you gotta admit there are some pretty crappy GM's out there. IMO, Jamey gets the benefit of having been the first and he did an excellent job of laying the teams foundation. Between he and Fitz the Crew were established as a fan friendly franchise and that has gone through to today. We did have a good deal of success under his watch and if it hadn't have been for the DC machine of the day we probably would have won at least one and maybe a couple of Cup's. And he was the guy at the helm when Crew Park was conceptualized and built. And probably most important his act was followed by the walking dark ages that was Jim Smith and it is real easy to shine like a sun standing next to that.
Seems like Bliss makes most of the player decisions anyway, McCullers does the business stuff. I'm totally fine with all of the moves that we have made (although it's hard coming to terms with losing GBS). They're necessary business moves. The part I may not be happy with is what we do to rebuild, but we'll see about that.
I'll give MM a pass for now but if this does not work quickly; the grind stone is already wet and the headsman's ax is waiting to be sharpened.
The OP is an insult to my dogs' intelligence, and he's a particularly dumb dog. The McCullers era has been the most successful in the history of the club. Who the hell cares if his last job was as the piano player in a whorehouse? He's now one of the most experienced executives - as well as one of the most successful executives - in MLS. And you, Sir, are an idiot. Shut up.
Interesting turn, been called a moron, idiot (x2)and some other insult by Archer. I will stand by my statement. I dont think MM is a qualified candidate for a soccer franchise. While GBS is an accomplishment, as someone else pointed out, Bliss is primarily responsible for personel both good and bad. McCullers is not responsible for the play on the field, that is the coach and players. So to attribute the "team accomplishment " to MM is not accurate. The Business end of the crew is what MM is responsible for and i am willing to bet that most of the people sharing the insults have at some point stated the marketing or business structure of the crew sucks. Would you say the Crew are successful in drawing naming rights of the stadium, making a noticeable footprint in a Buckeye College town and the suburbs? I can give credit where credit is due. I think the relationship of the Supporter Groups and the FO can be attributed to him, which is arguably the best in the league. And i will concede Guillermo. However, I dont think MM is going to lead the Crew past this plateau that we seen to have encountered. He has gone as far as he can.
