    Of course the opponent gains points. What I meant was: Iraq lost to countries ranked 80 and 96. They (Iraq) got 0 points for both matches. It would have been the same had Iraq lost to Spain and Germany, ranked 1st and 2nd. The FIFA ranking system doesn't punish you for losing against "weak" team. You get 0 points for a loss against Brazil and 0 points for a loss against American Samoa.

    I said this because it seemed to me you thought Iraq's ranking will be hurt by the low ranking of the teams they've lost to.

    Thanks for clarifying this matter. I thought they lost points aswell. But now i realise that a loss will keep them on the same points.

    They do lose points because their average goes down (Points = Points + 0, Games = Games + 1, Average Points = Points/Games). But for a single match you can't get negative points. A loss = 0 points.
