I feel comfortable voting now. It is possible nicodemus can sneak in with a brilliant last pick. Auriaprottu afgrijselijkheid Matt in the Hat I also want to say that the draft was awesome and everyone did a fantastic job.
as much as i hate the inclusion of Layla from "Unplugged", i vote for Caddman. rather than Hotel California, i would have pimped Joe Walsh's solo from "White Man, Black Man" from Thirds one of the few solos where the climax comes in the 8th bar. the solo on "Midnight Man" (1:42 - 1:59) is excellent as well. also, i prefer the third solo -- tho' the other two are fine -- from "Lines On My Face" to the "Do You Feel..." voice box solo on Frampton Comes Alive
In my defense, my original selection of the Derek and the Dominos version was brought into question by the judges panel. How long is the voting open? I was going to catch up on some listening.
I'm gonna go ahead and vote too, because in none of the dozen scoring systems I have tried in the last hour (trying to break ties) is nicodemus in the running... So, by a system giving points for: "number of selections which I might have taken if all of mine were taken before me," genre diversity, temporal diversity, "fame" of the solos and "fame" of the soloists, what I come up with is: 1. Cascarino's Pizzaria 21 2. Auriaprottu 20 3. SpencerNY 19 (It's a pretty brutal scoring system-- my own draft only scores a 26 out of a possible 50, and I got full first category points for all ten of my selections. The remaining scores were 16, 15, 15, and 5.)
Oh geez, got some homework to do tonight! This will probably be more agonizing than trying to come up with the picks.
My top 3: Matt in the Hat Cascarino's Pizzeria Caddman Some tray picks left on my board: Big Love (live acoustic version) - Fleetwood Mac Know Your Enemy - Rage Against The Machine Little Wing - Jimi Hendrix Limelight - Rush Stairway to Heaven - Led Zep Roll With The Changes - REO Speedwagon Alive - Pearl Jam Stone Cold - Rainbow Man in the Box - Alice in Chains Truckin - Grateful Dead If You Have To Ask - Red Hot Chili Peppers I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man - Prince Cherub Rock - Smashing Pumpkins Been Caught Stealing - Janes Addiction Heavy - Collective Soul
Caddman Cascarino Taosjohn I basically went through and did top 3 from each round, then counted who appeared in the top 3 the most times. Caddman got the most top 3's, Cascarino wasn't too far behind. Taosjohn started off slow but I liked the second half of his picks. Everyone from the thread made my top three in at least one round.
No science or fancy formulas needed. Like Dubya, ya just gotta go with yer gut: afgrijselijkheid - went bigtime with Hard Rock+Metal selections. Assembled kind of an all-star team. caddman - Light My Fire...had forgotten that solo. big bonus for that. Matt in the Hat - i questioned the Heart pick. but Frampton Comes Alive is one of the rocking-est guitar albums of that era. Love the part at the end of the talkbox where the band comes together and makes a great big noise & he keeps jamming to the end.
Here's my completely subjective, totally unscientific top 3: 1. Matt in the Hat 2. Spencer NY 3. Nicodemus It was a fun experiment. Nice to be exposed to some old favorites as well some stuff that wasn't even on my radar.
As a child of new wave, I hate the guitar. And the guitar solo is where I would turn off the radio for most of these songs (that I know), so you may want to discount my votes. But, like Cascarino, I do have fond memories of Frampton Comes Alive. For some reason, it was the album that two of my friends owned, and early during parties, when we wanted to be welcoming to the football-player-and-cheerleader set, we would play that album a lot. Then, when we remembered that we didn't care for those guys, we'd drive them away with Ultravox's Vienna or some Human League. So... Matt in the Hat taosjohn Auriaprutto
Cascarino's Pizzeria and Matt in the Hat are tied for the lead and taosjohn is just a vote behind. Very close voting, for the most part. As we agreed, the $20 is on its way.
Damn. Too bad I didnt know that in advance. I would've thrown in this funny New Order live at the BBC clip. Its apparently 100 degrees judging by the way they're dressed, the soundboard guys can't get Barney's guitar levels right. It's a pretty big mess yet I still love the sound of his guitar.
