This thread is for preliminary roster announcements followed by speculation on the cuts ahead of the final roster submission. Thirty-man rosters are due May 11th, one of the moderators will open the thread shortly before then and post the rosters if nobody beats them to it. If one of the 4 teams submits a preliminary roster early someone will open the thread early. Feel free to PM a mod to alert them if this happens.

After that, we're sure there will be plenty to talk about until the final rosters are submitted on June 1st.

Thread is closed until the first roster is out. Stay tuned.

Ghana 30 man roster is out:
    http://worldcup.mtnfootball.com/live/content.php?Item_ID=28746

    Squad

Goalkeepers: Richard Kingston (Wigan, England), Daniel Adjei (Liberty Professional), Stephen Ahorlu (Heart of Lions), Stephen Adams (Aduana Stars)

Defenders: Samuel Inkoom (Basel, Switzerland), Hans Sarpei (Bayer Leverkusen,Germany) Lee Addy(Bechem Chelsea), John Mensah (Sunderland, England) Rahim Ayew (Zamalek, Egypt) Isaac Vorsah (Hoffenheim,Germany), John Paintsil (Fulham, England) Jonathan Mensah (Grenada, Spain), Eric Addo (Roda JC, Holland).

Midfielders: Dede Ayew (Arles Avignon, France) Michael Essien (Chelsea, England), KwadwoAsamoah (Udinese, Italy), Agyemang Badu (Udinese, Italy), Stephen Appiah (Bologna, Italy), Anthony Annan, (Rosenborg, Norway) Haminu Dramani (, Sulley Muntari, Inter Milan, Italy, Quincy Owusu Abeyie (Al Sadd, Qatar), Derek Boateng Getafe, Spain), Bernard Kumordzie (Pananoinois, Greece), Laryea Kingston (Hearts, Scotland), Kevin-Prince Boateng (Portsmouth, England)

Strikers: Prince Tagoe (Hoffenheim, Germany), Asamoah Gyan (Rennes, France), Dominic Adiyiah (AC Milan, Italy), Matthew Amoah (NAC Breda, Holland)

    MY COMMENT:
GK - no surprises. Kingston is no1 GK, Adjei is for the future.

DF - Again no big surprises, albeit I am a bit let down that David Addy (now at FC Porto) has not been given a chance (I really think he proved he should be first choice LB). Also would prefer to see Quartey over Eric Addo, but I guess the coach wanted some experience. Fortunately Jonathan Mensah has been called in as well as the very consistent Lee Addy.

MF - Very predictable line-up. People will be pleased that Kumordzi has been given a chance to shine. The old-guard has all been called up: Laryea Kingston, Stephen Appiah, Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari with only Muntari probably guaranteed a spot. Notable players to miss a call-up: Prince Buaben (Dundee Utd), Nana Asare (Roda JC), Mubarak Wakaso (Elche), Ahmed Barusso (Torino), Moussa Narry (Auxerre). People will also notice that Kevin Prince-Boateng is now officially a Ghanaian and very likely to play against his brother in the Germany match. Draman is there once against - probably one of the most talented players out there... but for one thing... he must also be one of the stupidest - he never misses a chance to miss a chance.

ST - The only shock is that only 4 players have been called up. Eric Bekoe has been shuned once again, so we have the usual suspects. Prince Tagoe has been given a vote of confidence, despite being rathe poor against Bosnia. Hopefully Adiyiah will get more playing time than at the 2010 African Cup of Nations.

Only 4 players from the African Cup of Nations have not been called back: Ransford Osei (FC Twente), Opoku Agyemang (Al Sadd, due to injury), Moussa Narry (Auxerre), Harrison Afful (Esperance). 6 U20 Youth World Cup winners have made the 30 man roster.

from the german perspective i think loew blundered in not taking hummels, hoewedes and despite his inexperience possibly even contento.....not overly confident that defensively this german side is world cup winning material.
should be more than ok for the group stages though.

for the culling i'd prefer to see cacau, tasci, aogo and trochowski go and would've found a spot for kuranyi.

also hoping neuer gets the no.1 spot and jogi gives marin & kroos some decent game time

I wonder how Marin is going to handle playing against Serbia.

He should do fine, he is a very good player.
Well it isn't sure he will be in the starting eleven.

I think this would be the first time that two brothers would face each other in two different teams at a world cup.
Well, actually they're only half brothers, but still...

I know that he is a great player but I'm sure it won't be easy for him playing against his native country.

I don´t think that this is going to be a big problem. His parents fled to Germany when he was just 2 years old. He was also born in Bosnia and never had a serbian passport. He did have dual citizenship until he renounced his bosnian nationality in early 2008.

I'm just asking because this interview caused a stir in Serbia: http://www.sportal.rs/news.php?id=15660

    Translation:

How do you feel about playing Serbia?
-I didn't wish to play against Serbia but what can you do. Right after the draw I started receiving messages from friends and family and my mother told me right away 'Son, why did it have to be Serbia?" I thought the same thing when the ball from the 4th pot was opened.

how do you see the group?
-It's going to be hard for everybody, in the group there are really strong teams. I hope that in the end we will advance together, Serbia and Germany.

how much do your teammates know about the Serbian team?
-It's not necessary for me to explain to them what kind of team the Serbs are. They all know everything about Vidic, Ivanovic, Pantelic, Stankovic....I was talking to my teammate from Werder Ozil and he told me that we have to beat Australia and Ghana and with Serbia it will be an open match.

Have you already imagined the battle with our fullbacks?
-We have great fullbacks: Ivanovic, Kolarov, Obradovic....

    We have?
Yes, we have. I am remaining a supporter of Serbia even though I will give it my all for Germany to achieve success in South Africa. But when we are talking about fullbacks I think that it would be most interesting if I played against Antonio Rukavina, who is my good friend.

Complete preliminary rosters from Group D:

It's a pity about the injuries of René Adler and Simon Rolfes, also the absences of Torsten Frings and Kevin Kurányi (Germany), and Eddy Bosnar (Australia).

This is big preliminary list of players for the Serbian team. It will be downsized on 23 names before the world cup.

My prediction is that Tomic, Lekic, Sulejmani, Rukavina, Matic, Brkic and Vukovic will be out.
