Taylor Phinney was disappointed Sunday when he lost a chance at a second Giro d’Italia stage win in a bizarre mishap in Milan.
The race motorcycle ahead of Phinney in the stage 21 time trial missed a turn on the course and led the American off-course. Phinney was forced to turn around and return to the course.

 

Rodriguez is almost already out of pink at the intermediate time check.

 

I forgot to mention that I think Cav will lose the points jersey by one point.

 

The gap is now at 33 seconds, so Hesjedal is riding to the Giro d'Italia title.

 

Hesjedal needs to relax, banking corners a bit crazy.

 

Hesjedal is 4th fastest at the second time check.

 

The Spaniard needs a miracle and Hesjedal is leading the Giro because the gap between them is 44 seconds.

 

De Gendt finishes nicely, but will it be enough to overtake Scarponi?

 

He's not going to do it. De Gendt is going to take a place on the podium.

 

Hesjedal at 34:15 has finished...now the clock.

 

It's close but the Spaniard crosses the line in 35:01.

So Hesjedal has won the 2012 Giro d'Italia, Rodriguez is second and Thomas De Gendt takes third.

 

First time since 95 there has not been an Italian on the podium....if I heard that right.

 

Never happy, are they?

The Stelvio stage is one I am definitely going to watch again.
