Is that the Regionalliga? I know it's only a highlight reel, but that's a surprisingly high level of play for a fourth division.
Yeah, its a pretty high level. It shouldn't be all that surprising for MLS fans. Saer Sene came from the Regionalliga to the New England Revolution and he regularly makes the team of the week. The Regionalliga isn't really much worse than the 2 BuLi. Its just an extremely deep lower league system with a lot of young skillful players. Gyau is in good hands.
He played in the reserves most of the year for Bayern's II team. It's not any forgone conclusion that young Joseph is SOL. Hell, I still think he becomes a bench regular by midseason next year. EDIT: Hoffenheim has been really active in bringing in youngsters, particularly Americans over the past couple years. They also been really active in bringing senior team players too.
Hoffenheim are in training camp in Füssen and defeated 7th division side FC Füssen 12-1 today. Gyau did not score (assists are not given) but he was one of two players to play both halves. Otherwise, it was a split squad. http://www.achtzehn99.de/tsg-startet-mit-testspielsieg-ins-trainingslager/ He also listed in the Pros' roster too. http://www.achtzehn99.de/kader-profis/

Does this mean he has now been brought up to the first team?
Being as he is listed there and is with the team in training camp, it looks like it. He could still play in the second team, though. The first round of the cup is the weekend of August 17, the Bundesliga starts on the following weekend so there is a lot of time for him to impress in the meantime! Does this mean he has now been brought up to the first team?
He's been with the first team for half a year now. He still plays with the second team. I believe he splits his training between the two, except for weeks in which he makes the first team 18.
Joe Gyau played the entire second half in a friendly against FC Wanger. Hoffenheim won the game 7-0, the team just finished their 8th straight day of 3 a days in training camp.
With the first team but it was a split squad: they had a match yesterday and only Fabian Johnson was in both yesterday's and today's starting lineup. And only two subs today were in yesterday's squad. Gyau played the full 90 minutes against the 6th division side. http://www.achtzehn99.de/hartes-stueck-arbeit-in-stadelhofen/
I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to put this video but I just saw the highlights of when the US U20 team lost to Guatemala last year, and if you skip to 2:24 - 2:35 Gyau is AMAZING! This kid has the speed and skill, I hope he gets some PT for Hoffenheim this season because I would really like to see him play at LW for the USMNT.
Joe Gyau came into the game in the second half and scored a goal in a 10-1 preseason win against FV Wiesental.
