Well, speaking solely in terms of why half black, half white people are thought of as black in general, it's a reference to the laws of the early 20th century that stopped people from voting in the reconstruction era of the South: the "one-drop rule" and all that. That said, I took the initial comment to be as innocuous as you meant it, so I don't think the budding conversation on philosophy of race is necessary. It's a major buzzkill actually.
