Bump I was glad the game was on tv in the US yesterday. First match I've seen since I got back from being over there that I didn't need a internet feed to follow. Not the most exciting game but Andre took his goal very well. Nasty header. I'd like to see Valbuena and Gignac on the pitch at the same time instead of APG subbing in for him. I'm sure the attack will kick it up a notch once a healthy APG and Valbuena are playing together regularly.
I thought Baup was a bad hire but he is doing a good job with a reduced budget but Puel or Garde are still ahead of him for manager of the year IMO.
Very good tidbit of info. Hopefully we don't fall apart in the second half of the season, as we did last year. Also, why isn't Cheyrou playing? Is he hurt or something?
Puel certainly, Garde hardly so. It's easier when you Gourcuff, Lisandro, Gomis, Bastos, Briand etc ...
i could agree, but before the team came together in a way it's hard to ascribe to anything or anyone but RG, all these players except lisandro were getting nothing but guffaws from the punditry. when he arrived (greeted by much skepticism) many were predicting that OL was on the way to foundering corps et biens... and all the players you mention (and more) were on the roster at that time.
Puel turned a team of losers into charming troublemakers while Garde, even though he's doing well, had a strong basis of players no matter what the pundits said last year. It's not even close to me.
i always had a good opinion of baup. when he was an analyst on C+ i often reflected, "wait a min, what the hell is this guy doing here? he clearly knows what he's on about, doesn't he know that's not done on CFC?"
Honestly it's not my intention, I dislike individual awards. Garde is doing pretty well so I don't wanna sound like I want to diminish what he's doing.
For those of you/us with DishNetwork, our cup game vs. Guingamp will be shown tomorrow live on Univisión deportes (channel #869).
Thats the magic of the Coup de France. Marseille are now tied 1-1 with Guingamp in extra time. Guingamp is L2 but the population of the town in less than 8,000. Could you imagine Man U or Liverpool getting beat by a club from a town of 8,000 people in the FA Cup ? It wouldnt happen. Milan or Juve wouldnt get beat by a team from a town that small either in the Coppa Italia. Only in France.
Looks like Gignac saved the day. Guingamp are a strange club. They draw a lot of fans for being in such a small town. They are kinda like a mini Lens. I guess they are unique in France and other countries dont have teams who's stadiums are bigger than the town they play in.
using the population of the town of guingamp is misleading, but in a way you're still right. brittany is still decidedly rural so though guingamp only has 8000 people the cotes-d'armor departement has about 600,000. that said, the chef-lieu (county seat) and biggest city in the area, is saint-brieuc. it's so close to guingamp that i imagine a great many guingampois actually work in saint-brieuc, but for football the tail wags the dog : to the point that the fairly successful Stade Briochin women's team was taken over this season by EAG so as to become more competitive in a rapidly rising D1.
Well Lyon lost and PSG didn't have an easy time either so Marseille don't come off looking that bad. Didn't manage to catch the match but Gignac's brace sounds encouraging.
I think it's fair to say we're out of the running for the league title. So, at this point I'd take Champs League qualification and a cup title as overachieving success for this season. Dunno if I am being too optimistic/unrealistic: what do you guys think?
3rd or 2nd should be the goal but due to France's poor performaces in Europe you'll have to play 2 Champions League qualifying rounds if you finish 3rd and that is not ideal.
As of right now I got PSG 1st, OL, 2nd, Rennes 3rd. OM are sliding fast. Rennes are playing much better than them.
Huge result. Not a great game but the last minute goal coupled with PSG losing has OM back in the mix. Game in Paris next Sunday just got even bigger which is hard to do.
If there's one game to win, it's this one. I can hardly wait. Haven't been excited like that since Gerets's tenure.
