Two weeks, two halfs. First the Knobstone Trail Mini--13.1 near Bloomington on hilly and winding singletrack that I'm not at all familiar with. This one beat my ass. I got caught up with really fast group for about the first 5k and spent the rest of the race paying for it. It was about 40 F and had rained all day the previous day. Lots of fun, but wow, that was hard. Ended up finishing in about 2:07. Today was the inaugural Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and Half. Again, I ran the half. This was the opposite of last week--perfect weather, flat road course, lots of people, and much faster. The chip had me at 1:38. I'm happy. I'm going to run a 5k for fun in a couple weeks and call it a season. My plan right now is to work on general fitness through the winter, maybe do a swimming program. I'll probably avg about 15-20 miles running per week, but I'm going to try to add strength and speed until March-ish, and then try to increase endurance again. [cross posted in the runners thread]
Sounds like it. I've only been back at it for about a year. One thing about running--no matter how good you get, a big race will be a humbling experience. I do wonder sometimes what I'd be like as a runner had I not taken the better part of a decade off to smoke heavily and drink epically.
it's bloody freezing tonight and i have to play football in two hours time, meaning it's only going to get colder by then. i'll refrain from going for the obvious it's minus7 gag but it's easily one of the coldest nights yet. methinks i'll be wearing a training top tonight. preferably one with pockets. if i could get away with a ski-jacket i'd have one of them on as well!
I hope you didn't freeze to death! To be honest, I like jogging at low temperatures ... but playing football, is another thing.
no. but i was mince and we got pumped. anyway, just back from working in Aberdeen for two days and it was a total freeze out yesterday. we drove to the hotel at about 7:30pm and the car park was completely iced up. so i got the throttle down in the Transporter, yanked the handbrake and managed to park it perfectly... a la Jim Carrey in Ace Ventura. Like a Glove
a large family outing to the Carnival at the SECC last night. http://www.winterfestglasgow.com/irn_bru_carnival/ while we were there we saw Massimo Donati and Glen Loovens walking round with their families. it was nice to see them being generally undisturbed and allowed to enjoy the fun in relative peace. oh, and it goes without saying, but Donati's missus is hot hot hot.
Btw: Do you remember that cute polar bear baby from the Nuremberg Zoo I posted at the beginning of this thread? In the meantime, she became a real lady...
I'd like to see how badly I would get my ass kicked in something like this http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/02/tough_guy_challenge_2009.html
Can I have a general rant in here? So I was watching You Have Been Watching last night. Charlie Brooker's new program. It’s just about what’s been on the TV. One of the things they were talking about was ITN running a news report comparing Michael Jackson’s funeral to Princess Diana’s! Essentially it was like a play off. Michael Jackson won 3 – 1! Just try to take that in. It was a f3cking news report. If that’s what the people want in this country then I’m leaving. It must be full of thick cvnts! I managed to watch it again on you tube this morning but ITN have since had it removed. It says “This video is not available in your country due to copyright restrictions.” Maybe some of you outside the UK maybe able to see it. http://www.youtube.com/results?sear...lQ2wQboV-oHgIuIOhgI2U3xXqcEXroLhgHw_VHeAaEMDS
I saw that too. And, to be fair, it is ITV. They've been making television and news for the brain dead among us for decades.
Dr Jeykll What do you do when your winning, when everything is rosy with cheer, straight down the pub to celebrate, singing, back clapping and beer. It's easy when it's 3 nothing, the team's playing them off the park, song's spring forth without thinking, floodlights, hold back the dark. When the shoe, it's on the other foot, things are not going so well, the back of your throat is barren, the silence beginning to tell. The atmosphere gets to the players, who worry, the fans on their backs, you can cut a slice it's so heavy, howling and hunting in packs. That is the time that they need you, when everything is falling apart, the famous twelfth man of the terrace, backing his team from the heart. So next time, when things are not working, a silly goal has been given away, don't let the monster awaken, keep Mr Hyde, well at bay.
Glasgow has been pretty good over the last couple of days. Hot on Monday as well. 5's was a struggle at times. I prefer playing football in the rain.
I'm thinking I might finally be due a trip back to Scotland. Maybe the 2010 marathon will be my excuse.
