Or simply have the TV crew lower the levels in the supporter section mikes for goal kicks. It's not that difficult!!!
YSA is not going to change anytime soon. As some have already indicated, it's really loud because the whole stadium is yelling it. If the south ward stopped it next home game, you'd hardly notice a difference. And, I'm not a big fan of YSA, but I do participate in the leadup and usually just yell "You Suck". Partly because there are a few very young kids near me (and I try to keep it clean out of respect) and partly because I feel the asshole part is implied enough not to be necessary.
I'd be fine with a more "clever" chant for goal kicks. However, what's easier/more likely? A guy simply flipping a switch in a TV production booth or getting thousands of fans to stop?
If the South Ward stopped for 4-5 games in a row I would bet that the rest of the stadium would stop as well.
Telling fans what they should chant is overstepping boundaries. Censoring people is like trying to hold down a boner - it makes it worse. If people didn't want to chant it, they wouldn't. By the way, the first time I heard the word asshole was at home. I just don't remember if I was the recipient of that though...
So if the fans of one team started chanting racist chants it would be overstepping boundaries to tell them to stop? Surely you don't really believe that.
Comparison: You suck shuttlecock, directed at current New England GK Bobby Shuttleworth, is really funny. You suck asshole, chanted at everyone, is vulgar for vulgarity's sake, unoriginal, stupid, and should be banned.
Calling someone an a-hole is different then calling someone a n-----, monkey, sp--, g--k, and so on. Big difference.
Saying the word asshole compared to making monkey noises are different things. I don't think Matt Reis takes it to heart when people chant YSA, but if Bouna had a banana thrown his way - that's a different story.
Furthermore - if UEFA and FIFA have been harping on that for as long as they have and it still exists; what is Garber going to do?
It's the FCC, and I don't believe that the FCC regulates cable, only broadcast networks. I am not comparing the two, merely making the point that competition authorities can regulate fan behavior.
Went to the yankee game the other night and heard loud f-bombs about every couple minutes. Surely YSA a few times a game isn't any worse.
