I just wanna say it's great to see NY finally not shit the bed with over 40,000 fans in the stadium. When has that not happened, if ever in that team's history? It was like this game was paying it all back in one lump sum...
I don't want to see Altidore leave New York. His inclusion in the lineup is vital to the team. When Altidore produces a goal or an assist the Red Bulls are 6-1 with no ties. Without his production, the Bulls are 3-6 with 3 draws. When he plays at his best, the Red Bulls get three points. Is Altidore's price tag worth more to the Bulls than what he produces on the pitch? We'll see. I know that MLS is in the middle of a transition phase, but at some point we have to start keeping our best players. Why not start now?
I'm sure he'll get a DP salary offer in the coming seasons, but only he knows if he thinks europe is worth it.
Not to make too many excuses, but we were missing three of our full-strength back four, and the fourth was injured in the first 20 minutes. And a couple of the defenders who were on the field were playing with minor injuries. This was an extremely depleted, makeshift back line, and it showed.
From what I saw from Manchester United's offense in their first match this year, I'm not so sure they could have scored 5 goals last night (in other words, Man Us offense sucked your first home game- sorry) LA was missing 3 of 4 regulars, and sorry that MLS can't afford to buy 2 entire teams of players yet- we don't have riches of big TV money here yet (really never). Quality drops off a lot after starters in this league
Word is tat Becks was scheduled to come out mid second half, but wanted to stay in because of the intensity of the game.
Just watched the highlights - great stuff! Hilarious quote from the play-by-play guy: "Two unanswered goals by the Galaxy answered by two unanswered goals by the Red Bulls..." (which were, of course, later answered by the the Galaxy) Notice to Broadcasters: Unanswered ≠ in a row !!!
I saw this game in the UK, tried to watch it on MLSNet but they couldnt show it because of Blackout Rules, so managed to find a live feed. This was one of the best games I have seen in a while, better than some Champions League and Prem games. The defence needs a little tweaking tho My man of the match was Richards, I loved the way it reminded me of the early years of the Prem where wingers were played in every team and passing was focused down the wing. That little guy tore down that wing from kick-off to full-time!!! He has heart!!
best game in mls history... by far. i would actually rate that game as entertaining and fast paced as an epl game. ny redbull is a pretty decent team. becks really raises the level of the galaxy. his vision is amazing. absolutely amazing. his ability to find passing lanes and slot balls through has never been seen before in the mls. he raises everyones game as a leader and with his ability to distribute the ball and hold onto possession with composure. in order for the us and the mls to be taken seriously we need to start developing players at his level. landon's a solid player and the best the us has ever produced but the difference is obvious. becks has the ability to make the entire team look better. landon can not do that. his poise on the ball, vision and ability to distribute is lightyears ahead of landon. landon looks better now because of becks.
This game was great for the league. I must admit to only seeing the highlights, but I'm not talking about technical quality, I'm talking about raising profile. It had the big names Beckham, Donovan, Angel and the young star Altidore. It had the big crowd in a big stadium, it had goals and it was in doubt 'til the end with a late winner. Forget the slightly dodgy goalkeeping, the casual or first time fan won't have noticed, but they will have noticed the end to end nature of the scoring, the tension and the atmosphere. So often these chances to spread the game are lost, this chance was grabbed with both hands, the only thing missing was a Beckham goal from distance.
Reminded me off early 90's English football. Fast paced end to end with lots of entertainment but not alot of skill and hilarious defending for high scores.
This was one of the fastest paced game I've seen, but Richards just couldn't catch a break. 50,000+ people jumped on the David Beckham band wagon.
They were off it at the final whistle. That was a pro New York crowd. They may have came for Beckham, but they left talking about Angel and Altidore. The cheers when LA scored were noticeably high pitched, like that of a teenage girl. Meanwhile when NY scored the final goal, the whole stadium erupted. It was awesome
It was an amazing match, I enjoy it from start to finish. I think Beckham played really well despite his ankle injury. Very intense and well played game.
Being at this game inspired me to register for this site (even though I've been reading on here for a while.) I was cheering for RBNY the whole time and booing at every becks free kick, after a while people around me started to pick it up. My section even had frequent "let's go Red Bulls" chants. If it wasn't a pro NY crowd to start with, it certainly was by the end.
the boos when bex touched the ball definately got louder as the game went on, drowning out all the LA fans around me. Best game I've seen in person.
Last night's game was a well-played, exciting match. I thought Beckham played very well and I was very encouraged by how well Carlos Pavon played. Hopefully the Galaxy can finish out the year strong as that is great for the league. However, the player that stole the show for me was Jozy Altidore. I think when everything is said and done people will call Altidore the greatest player to ever play in MLS. Just as a note, I have read a ton of glowing articles about last night's game all over the internet. I found this one to be particularly good. http://www.sportscolumn.com/story/2007/8/19/11472/7310
