I never saw this thread! Costa Rica and Guatemala are futsal powerhouses.

Guatemala finished in a historic 5th place at this year's Grand Prix.

I can't find any WCQ info for Thailand 2012. The wiki article says this WC will feature 24 teams instead the previous 20 but I wonder if CONCACAF got any extra spots?

Yes, CONCACAF spots increased from 3 to 4. Here is the allocation of spots per confederation: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/aff...dcupthailand2012-slotallocationfor24teams.pdf

Guatemala and Costa Rica should be fighting for the top spot of the region.

I seem to recall a rumor that Guatemala would host the 2012 CONCACAF Championship (again) but no decision has been made yet. The CONCACAF congress is not until 23 May but that seems late for the hosting rights to be awarded.

    Thanks ChaChaPedia. ;)

Great info, and with 4 spots for CONCACAF there's a good chance of having 2 Central American teams at the WC.

Caribbean qualifying was cancelled after 4 of the 6 teams withdrew.

So, the 8 teams at the finals tournament, playing for 4 places in Thailand will be:

Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama, USA, Mexico, Cuba, Saint Kitts & Nevis and the winner of a 2-leg play-off between Canada and El Salvador.

Guatemala, Costa Rica and Cuba are the 3 favourites based on recent form, with the 4th team likely to come from USA, Panama or Mexico. It's hard to say who will reach the finals out of Canada and El Salvador - but whoever does, they will not be expected to do very much. Saint Kitts & Nevis have never played a match before, and are only playing because all the other Caribbean sides withdrew (Haiti, Trinidad & Tobago, Guyana and Dominican Republic - who would also have made their first appearance).
