You are absolutely right. But just a remark : today it is extremely easy to copy a DVD via a computer. Back in the early 2000's, when the first DVD recorders were released, it was more complicated, because computers were not fast enough at that time. It may be why "the idiot" did what he did (because there was no other way by the time he did it...).
