Ballack has been a flop. Nothing but cliches out of him from the commentary chair. The whole American studio coverage on espn is just a string of cliches.

i think the translation for Ballack what missed him up...i guess him being german and trying to explain everything in english is just not practical ... sometime you are just short of words

and no i am not defending him.. i am just saying what i see

Even in broken English he still offers more analysis than any of the native speakers in that studio. I think he's been refreshing compared to what was on offer in the past here.

I considered the language barrier, but he would have the time to get his key ideas translated into something understandable. Americans are generally comfortable with non-native english speakers.

I haven't heard anything from Ballack yet but standard fare. "Reus and Schurrle are good players and I'm not worried." "I wish some one would attack Spain and put them under pressure." "Take Balotelli out after 60 min."

Martinez seems to be the best that espn has to offer.

He made more sense than Lalas ever did.

    extremely low bar to clear.

plus, he sounds more like Lalas every segment.

Lalas native speaker though...low bar or not. Hell, I did not know Ballack could read.

Yeah, Martinez is definitely the best man in the studio and Ballack has been pretty poor. Lalas is a good guy who's done some good things for US Soccer but I can't deny he's somewhat of a retard in the booth. His cheerleading for the English was annoying the hell out of me and I was hoping Ballack would punch in the face.

So now who does Lalas go for now? His 'homies' were knocked out by Germany, England, and now I suppose it's back to to tossing some Spanish Salad for him.

I agree. Not that he was great or anything but just different.

Martinez was fantastic. I really, really liked him.

I think Matt Damon should do a cameo as Ballack and see if anyone notices. ;)

For players who started, Boateng has GOT to be top-flop.

Boateng was not great, but for being a center back playing right back he did not flop. Podolski was horrible and I hope this is the beginning of his exit from the team. I expect him to flop at Arsenal too.

Did you watch today? Tell me how Boateng, playing a right back, was in position hugging Hummel's left nut in the middle and leaving his man WIDE open? He was decent in the first two games, but Loew made a mistake not keeping Bender in the RB role. He was ooodles better than Boateng.

For his out-guessing himself today, I would have to agree.

Holy crap yes!!!! I think many would agree Poldi would have to be a huge flop. But as someone pointed out earlier, a flop is someone you expected to do well and didn't. Not sure anyone outside of the Podolski family or his FB friends figured he would do anything of consequence.
