If we had drafted Zavaleta you would have complained that we took an Indiana guy instead of someone with talent, that we pay too much attention to Mais and Yeags instead of making out own decisions.
If someone said Zavaleta had no talent and we only drafted him because of Mais and Yeags every one should have laughed at them and put them on their ignore list... everyone.
Did someone say pizza videos? Also, it's quiet in here because every other thread has started handing out pitchforks and torches.
Exactly, I am sure that there were not two picks that everyone would have liked. But then that's show business.
We said that about Balchan because we could have taken Balchan with a later pick and instead used the pick we got him at for someone else higher on the board. Zavaleta was clearly, hands down, the best guy on the board, regardless of where he was from. Add to that, he filled an immediate need for the Crew in defensive depth... yet the Crew pass on him for some kid who never starts, may score a lot, loves yellow cards, is reportedly lazy and was suspended twice while at Duke for violating team rules. And it is very possible that he still would have been available to the Crew at their second pick. Once again, way too early. Seattle, damn the smart bastards, recognized Zavaleta's value (especially as a 10th pick) and trading up to get him. Nothing they did yesterday makes sense. There were better defenders on the board at our second pick even and they went with a guy who would arguably be available for the Supplemental Draft on Tuesday.
Well hopefully Bliss knows what he's doing becuase I saw that he coached this kid in the past. Maybe he knows a little more about him than we do around here.
I'm going to hope so because this was maybe the thing that had me scratching my head the most. I've even seen Bliss speak really highly of him both as a person and player. Now I don't expect Bliss to bash anyone on his super 20s team but I also don't expect him to say anything good unless he means it.
My only defense of them is saying that they knew who they wanted and they took them when they had the chance. They didn't roll the dice and hope they were around later. They didn't play games. Just picked the guys they clearly were interested in when they had the opportunity.
