If I remember correctly, we played 34 games both seasons so PPG from 2011 to 2012 probably had a small increase. It does little to state how bad we were before Higuain and Arrieta, to a slightly lesser extent, arrived. If not for those two and Gruenebaum's heroics, this team would have been out of the playoffs by September (pure speculation...I have nothing to back that statement up). If you were to compare PPG over Warzycha's tenure, though, you'd find a notable decrease since 2009.
I thought that last season had 2 more games than 2011... I do understand the possible higuain arietta bump but even with having more points I still dont think we were that good
Quick note that I'm not going to get into this particular thread. Everyone's mind is pretty much made up and won't change. It's why I've stayed out of the scandal thread and have stayed away from the politics thread recently. Don't get me wrong--it's fine to have those threads. But it's not worth my time and angst. If it's *really* important, you can PM me. And I think, looking at the first 30 or so posts in this thread, that I'm making a wise move.
I think it is difficult for anyone on the fence, those who see the other side of the argument, or those who actually see potential in the last couple of months, to post in this thread without a torrent of counter arguments that have been hashed and rehashed over and over. However, when it comes to comparing point totals in x season against point totals in y season, it does devalue the other "subjective" aspects of the RW out compaing. Now, admittedly, I am sure most of us are looking forward to next season. Simply for the reason that the Higuain and Arrieta partnership scores goals and provides entertainment. However, that does not discount from the fact that, who knows what RW will do next season. He may bench Arrieta for Schoenfeld because he works hard in training, or he may rest higuain because we are playing seattle away from home. We may also forget the curious subbing patterns, and the dubious tactical formations. Or the fact the crew always start the second half flat, or we play too defensively, or we roll over and let LA, NYRB, Seattle etc rub our bellies (and take three points) at home. Above all else. We may have got more points this season than any other but it still does not hide the fact we missed the playoffs.
I would consider benching Higuain at Seattle, why risk your best player on their miserable excuse for a playing surface?
I think it has more to do with just being Turf than anything. Haven't several "older" players sat out games there (GBS) due to not wanting to run on it.
So here it is..... everything is trending down from 2009 - 2012 except for GA/Game which is trending up. Regardless, they are all going down. The only upspot is that PPG rose this year over last, but is still a downward trend from 2009 until now. Year PPG GF/Game GA/Game GD/Game Goal Diff 2009 1.63 1.37 1.03 0.33 10 2010 1.67 1.33 1.13 0.20 6 2011 1.38 1.26 1.29 -0.03 -1 2012 1.53 1.29 1.29 0.00 0
