    5 years the longest.

Shows how hard is to make it in Edmonton pro-soccer.

Good for the owner by not pulling the plug.

I hope Edmonton keeps improving on and off the field.

Edmonton is really so fortunate to have an owner like Tom Fath, he's really committed to the city and furthering Canadian talent with FCE in NASL, the FC Edmonton Reserves in the Alberta Major Soccer League, the FC Edmonton Academy team at St. Josephs High School, and the program he also helped start in neighboring Calgary last year for womens soccer. Before starting the team he wasn't even a fan of the game yet and just became one when he decided to give back to the community through FCE. Hope his support and enthusiasm continue for many more years to come.

And that the crowds can grow to the point where he doesn't have to fund the team.

A question to Edmonton fans: What do you think it would take to grow the crowds to the 4000 to 5000 range?

Spending some $ on marketing the team, new turf without pointy ball lines, success in the Canadian Championship and on the field, and you may hit 4000 next season.

We'll see how they do this season, if they can increase to 3000-3500 per game this year it would be another positive on the increase to 2400+ per game last year. They have raised ticket prices again for this season, among the highest in the NASL as always.

It's a tricky balance. A reasonable annual budget for an NASL team is going to be in the $1 million (done very shoestring) to $2 million (more properly funded) range.

Ten home games means you need to bring in $100 k per game to run a minimum budget. You can make guesses about what percentage of revenue comes from ticket sales and do the math from there to figure out what they need to charge per ticket for a given level of attendance.

It's easy to see why ownership would want to attract at least 5000 fans per game.

You are right, however, that in Edmonton's case it is necessary to continue with the steady growth because they're unlikely to jump up to 5000 overnight.

Maybe they're using the date of being awarded the NASL team? Not sure but its more to do with a marketing angle they're using for the beginning of the season it seems, helping to give them a theme, otherwise they would be starting a campaign in the off season to celebrate after the 5th year of playing.

For sure though, its only the start of the 5th season they've been playing if you even count the 2010 exhibition season they played.

August 8th 1997 is the date used for the birth of the Chicago Fire, the first official game was in 1998.

So Edmonton probably has a similar date on when they started.

Wiki says February 2010, but the link is a dead link.
