FC Edmonton drops first leg of championship to Toronto FC It is going to be virtually impossible for Edmonton to claw their way back down in the 2nd leg in Toronto.
5,781, it says so in the article. A bit dissapointing for Edmonton's first competitive home game, against an MLS side and also a fellow Canadian team. If they can keep that level up then it's promising but if it'll probably drop off without the novelty of a first game, MLS team and Canadian team.
Nice stadium. But will be a bit cavernous if the crowds drop, as you'd expect them to. Are they planning on playing there for the regular season? I thought they were using that 3k seater (forgotten the name).
I wouldn't panic about Edmonton's attendance just yet. It was a 6:00 game at the request of the Canadian Soccer Association (I don't get it) and on wednesday. Let's see how Foote looks on sunday to judge them.
Two interesting pieces about FC Edmonton's game in the NCC... http://www.edmontonsun.com/2011/04/28/unfinished-business An interesting opinion in the first article is.."FC Edmonton put all their eggs into the soccer side and has been beyond abysmal on the business side. Without a clue about marketing and promotion and no serious ticket sales department, the team got to this game with owner Fath admitting they hadn't even succeeded in giving a significant percentage of the population any idea of who and what they are yet." Anyone know who the teams are that PMI contracted with to help with these types of issues in the NASL? It doesn't sound like FC Edmonton has. I'd be really curious to see who has contracted with PMI and compare their results to the teams doing it themselves. http://canadiansocceropinion.blogspot.com/2011/04/fc-edmonton-litmus-test-for-canadian.html This article takes a bit more optimistic viewpoint on FC Edmonton.
On the up side, I did see a photo in another post where they had some really nice promos on the side of some trains in Edmonton. It looked great.
im in the photo above.. face hidden behind the dude in the hat (grey hoodie) as well as pic below. anyways the game was well played by FCE considering the bigus Red Card!! Our supporters section turned from around 10 people into about 25 which was nice. Attendance was tough becouse of the horrible start time of 6pm! people cant get home from work and into the stadium by then! Also many candians had 2 game 7s to watch in the NHL
It does look great. Success in Edmonton will likely pave the way for a team in Calgary and who knows maybe in Saskatchewan as well.
I haven't seen anything other than the final result as 1-0 loss for FC Edmonton. Did they play that much better in the second leg? Or did TFC not play as well?
Re: MLS - NASL in the UCC [R] a little of both for what I saw, I missed the Van-mont game, I hear it was pretty good, 1-1 at the end Montreal missed a chance for the 2nd goal. MLS 3-0-1 NASL shame that we will not have any US open cup games.
Re: MLS - NASL in the UCC [R] In regular time, it was 1-0 MTL, but 1-1 on aggregate. At the last second Gerba hit the post with a very good header. The Impact hit the post twice in extra time (2x15 minutes). Vancouver was the better team, but the Impact got close to get a good result and the game was very exciting.
Edmonton played well, maybe not as well as in the first game, but at least, they were able to play with 11 men for 90 minutes.
