My favorite will always be his reaction after scoring his socond goal against Germany. You could just tell how pissed he was. He's running full speed and knocks the crap out of the ball right at the keeper, but the keeper never had a chance. He immediately stopped, turned around and just walked back.
mine was when he scored his first goal against Germany. He proved that he was back, and the goal was pretty great itself(not spectacular, but great hustle)...
Personally...I loved the 20 yard curve over the wall in Honduras. Can't see that one enough. Next...the Goal he scored against Mexico in Denver...In his celebration, he made a wispering gesture towards the stadium 90% full of mexicans. Doesn't get better than that
I'll second the goal against Mexico in Denver. I was there, and while the goal wasn't pretty, it was one of the most beautiful I've ever seen...
South Korea. I was there but on the far side of the field. Thought I saw the net move, but wasn't really sure if the ball went in and if so, who scored it. Then I saw a mohawk with outstretched arms emerging from the crowd of bodies. Seeing that in person juiced by about 8 Budweisers in a crowd of 60,000 + S. Koreans is as good as it gets.
Re: Re: Favorite Mathis Moments I have to second this one. I was sitting at the other end of the stadium, saw the goal, and the silence was priceless. 60k Koreans silenced. It was ************ing beautiful.
The biggest moment has to be the goal the mattered most - WC against SK. I lost it in front of the big screen at home at 3am or so with ten people who all got together to go nuts for US Soccer - how sweet it was!
The pass to Wolff because it felt like we waited forever for Clint to take Claudio's spot and when it happened our national team was transformed.
I liked the goal in SK, especially the picture in FourFourTwo of Koreans watching the game on a huge screen. A mixture of shock, anger, and sorrow as they seem to think the US have gone totally against the script.
The goal against South Korea was probably his biggest moment, but I still have a soft spot for his Maradona-esque run through the Dallas Burn defense which led to the greatest MLS goal I have ever seen.
Left or right? Tell me if I'm right about this: Mathis' goal against SK was shot with his left. McBride put a right footed service onto Mathis' right foot. Clint's second touch was on the very next step. What I'm wondering is whether the cross was headed away from Mathis or if it was somewhat of an inswinger.
Re: Re: Favorite Mathis Moments Thats exactly how I remember it also. Seeing the goal net move and remember my friend Dave there say "The first touch from Mathis, he is going to score a goal." The US was getting killed by Korea before that goal. It changed everything.
Re: Left or right? actually...O'brien looped it over the SK defense to Mathis on the run. The rest is correct.
this gets my vote for sure it was glorious i have a picture of mathis right after this goal he is screaming the honduran players and you can tell from the look on his face that he is saying some not so nice things about their momma's if i was on the other team i would hate his guts after that one but since he plays for the good guys then i love him all the more for it plus i was watching this game (ppv) in a st paul mn basement with a bunch of guys i had just met via the interent and sports illustrateds own grant wahl was with us he immortalized the moment for all of us a few days later in his cnnsi column its still archived at their site too what a blast the goal against sk is almost as glorious
