Hate to say it, but the less he starts for his club the greater the chances he'll opt to play for the US.

Of course, this begs the question about how much good he'd be to the US but as things stand, not being a star for his club means he's very unlikely to play for Germany's senior team.

Maybe you're right, but rooting for a player to be exactly good enough to make him an asset to the US and yet not so good as to make him attractive to Germany is a little too precise for me.

If he played, which I think he did, in the 2009 UEFA U-21 Championship, then yes he would have to file for a one-time switch. I believe even in the youth ranks a FIFA sanctioned event provisionally cap ties a player.

Yes, he does have to file for a one-time switch.

Every single time anyone files a FIFA one-time switch, it's because of a youth national team appearance in an official event.

Just look at those who have left or come to the US via the FIFA one-time switch

Edgar Castillo - had to use the one-time switch after he played for Mexico in U23 Olympic qualification

Jermaine Jones - had to use the one-time switch after he played for Germany in European U21 qualifying

Aaron Maund - had to use the one-time switch after he played for T&T at U17 World Cup

Neven Subotic - had to use the one-time switch after he played for USA at U17 World Cup

Arturo Alvarez - had to use the one-time switch after he played for USA at U20 World Cup

    Re: Fabian Johnson

I'm being pedantic because I can't help myself, Alvarez acutally was cap-tied to the US provisionally after playing in QUALIFYING for the U20 WC. He never actually played in the U20 WC for the US.

(He made a U20 WC roster once but was dropped for injury.)

Otherwise, your post, as it usually is, was spot-on.

    Re: Fabian Johnson

You have to admire the guy for sticking with his homeland in Germany , but considering he only gets the occasional Bundesliga appearance and mostly the Back-up on the bench for Wolfsburg (Germany NT picture not in sight at the moment), playing for the United States in our weakest position could add Quality games to his career at this stage. maybe an extra 10 games for each calender year which already doubles his current "4" for the season.

    Re: Fabian Johnson

He's stuck on the bench behind some Germans who aren't in Löw's picture either, so it's a very long way to go to catch Löw's eye; too long, I think.
Anyway, he should leave Wolfsburg just to promote his club career. Sitting on Wolfsburg's bench can't be the final goal, and I think he won't help the US with that lack of match practice. 122 Bundesliga minutes this season.

Looks like he won't even make the bench soon. Wolfsburg are bringing in Schalke's Farfan and Hannover's Christian Schulz as winger and wingback.

You think he goes to a BL.2 club? Can he crack the starting lineup in the relegation Bundesliga clubs?

    Re: Fabian Johnson

He was a starter for a midtable 2.BL club (1860) before his transfer to Wolfsburg, so unless he's regressed he should have no problem with getting in to the starting 11 at that level.

    To Munich?
