not a bad move for him(being completely blind to the fact that Crewe are heaven for young HG players, Dan Smith was moving out from there) I would say, at least better than city.

Still don't get why Liverpool are So keen on signing predominantly at this young level, King Kenny effect of building future? can't attract big names for first team so building from the (younger) block? or just as usual things happen?

    If he's 16 already he'll be U17.

What if he was 16 after the turn of the year, like say, Loftus-Cheek?

I guess it is just a recruitment strategy to bolster strength in depth in the youth pipeline. Most big clubs do the same. It is hard to say whether LFC are doing this more than other clubs, or whether it is just being publicised more. I am more aware of LFC activities as that is my club but there IS a lot of player movement at youth level generally at ever increasing numbers. Man City were chasing Smith too and Crewe's financial issues means that they will possibly lose other young talents too, like Powell.

I think with the new recruitment rules coming in, EPPP , then it will be even harder for the less rich clubs to keep their prospects. From an England perspective it may prove to be a good development, but I think some clubs will suffer from it.

Smith, Sinclair, Sterling, Ibe and Ojo would suggest that Liverpool are targeting young English talent. I know clubs purchase players all the time at youth level but I don't think it's that common for clubs to take players at 15-16 from other English clubs.

Arsenal do target young English talent but tend to pay big money eg. Chamberlain 12m, Walcott 10m, reported 5m bid fror Lascelles.

Well there is no question that LFC are targeting young English talent but other clubs are doing it too. City were after Smith too, Chelsea got Bamford and were in for Ojo too, Arsenal were after Sterling. Without a detailed examination of the youth recruitment at all the major English clubs, it is impossible to say whether LFC are focusing more on English youth than other clubs. Maybe they are. At this point, it is too early to tell whether it will prove a good thing for LFC or England.

As an aside, Sterling now seems to be a first-team squad member at LFC, attending the Hillsborough Memorial Service with the first team and missing todays Reserves match all point to this.

Chelsea 2-0 up at HT - good header from Chalobah and very good shot from Lewis Baker.

Much is made of Man U having very much a team of first years but Chelsea have only four in their side that will be too old to play next year. And with something like nine England schoolboy internationals looking for a place next year it will be even more competitive at Chelsea next season.

Thanks Barry that was a good read.

Going to be interesting to follow Man City's England Youth Players progress in the coming years. They basically have a full team. But there has been a big drive in attracting foreign talent lately and they have brought in close to 10 of them plus the Roman's,Rekik's,Suarez's,Rusnak's,Guidetti's for example. Some have risen this season and some have fallen due to injury or average form.

    Angus Gunn (96) regular

    Shay Facey (95)
    Kieran Kennedy (93)
    Courtney Meppen-Walter (94)
    Ashley Smith-Brown (96) regular

    George Evans (94)
    George Glendon (95)
    Kean Bryan (96)

    Jordie Hiwula (94) regular
    Devante Cole (95) regular
    Alex Henshall (94)

this season there was a drop-off from 16s > 17s as City appeared to move a few of the homegrown players on and start the recruitment from abroad.

In an interview, City's chairman Al Mubarak said that he believes Karim Rekik and Denis Suarez will become world class and make it at City.
