You don't see a difference between the early stages of a tournament and the QUARTERFINALS? Seriously? Maybe I should type this in crayon so folks can catch on: MLS is at a distinct disadvantage by having to play the quarterfinal matches after a 5 month layoff for most squads. Even so, MLS squads WOULD NOT WIN the Concacaf Champions League because they are part of an inferior league. It would make games more competitive if MLS squads were in form when the quarterfinals are played. BTW, every MLS team does have a strong preseason including tournaments against each other. If you think that's anywhere near the same level of intensity/quality as playing league matches that count then you simply know nothing about sport.
Did I say anything remotely close to that? I said it would create more competitive matches. I didn't say a single word about the fairness of it. You folks desperately need reading comprehension courses.
so what you are saying is that the MMLS will suck less if they didn't have that preseason during the champions league. wow, an MLS apologist. GTFO with those excuses.. be a man and accept that the MMLS will never be any good regardless of when they play their season.
So the difference is a bigger layoff, sure, but they are elimination games (I guess in Europe teams from Scandinavian countries would have an advantage over teams that take the summer off since the Scandinavian teams would be in season form while the teams from say Greece would be coming back from summer break). So it does not matter if they are quarterfinals vs. pre-group eliminations, the biggest difference would be the opponent. I know Russian team used to complain that if they made it past the group stage then they would have the same problem as MLS teams and they would have to face teams from other countries in season form, while the Russians were in post season form. I wonder if the change in schedule will help the Russian teams in the European competitions. That would be an interesting statistic, how well do teams in Scandinavia do in the elimination rounds vs leagues with a higher ranking (ignoring the big 5) in the Elimination rounds (pre-group).
BTW I started looking at some of the qualification rounds for Europe and LOL at Red Bull Austria losing to some team from Lexenburg.
So group stage, against mostly horrendous teams from countries with 8 people, is the same as the QUARTERFINALS? I'd swap those starting dates in a heartbeat, especially since group stage is both easier and consists of more games so that 1 result isn't nearly as important. As far as the "protection" goes, it's clearly designed to keep both US and Mexico squads in until the quarterfinals. Obviously Concacaf wants those teams to make it through and yet one from each country, RSL and Chivas, figured out a way to not do it this time.
This from the person whose posts are usually littered with racist and homophobic comments. Keep up the jingoistic nonsense.
so whats the purpose of even trying to make your point if that is what i am going to assume what you want. according to you its bs that MLS plays second round games during preseason. what do you want me to do? not read into that comment?
your use of ad hominem would have more effect if it had any hints of veracity. unless you are referring to my comments in paul calixte's blog , then you have been rustled beyond repair, and it serves you better to leave this thread. the MMLS sucks balls and should not be in the champions league, specially if their fans can't handle ******** chants in their away games. lulz
