Just read the piece on the interview Luci provided a Honduran news source on Behind the Badge.

Does anyone have a reference to how long Emilio's contract is? I thought it was 2 years. Which makes the following statement very upsetting.

I am thinking if we can get Gallardo healthy for next season then we will have one helluva strong team heading into next season and if we are lucky the CCL elimination stages. But that thought included Emilio being around. Who knows what the deal is?

Didn't we just voluntarily give him a buttload of money? I'd like to see this team play at full strength for once. And if we some how end up with Boyzzz we can be a pretty solid side. Guerrero and Gallardo haven't even played together yet. If they can take some of the pressure off Moreno and Emilio he can get back to a 20+ goal season IMHO.

Did we buy extra year or years with said buttload of money?

I thought we bought an extra year which would be 2009-2010. Not positive though, let me research it and see what I can find.

You and me both. We have yet to see what a full strength DCU V.08 is capable of.

We almost saw it against the Galaxy but that was pre Crayton and Guerrero.

Emilio says his contract runs through 2011 in this interview:

How are things going at DC United?
-Very well. Everything has gone very well since I arrived (at DCU) and I have just renewed my contract through 2011. DCU is a big club and, without a doubt, this has been a very good experience.

Personally, I think he was just being very diplomatic with his answers. Luciano is very well regarded in Honduras and the issue of him coming back to play for Olimpia, some other Honduran club or nationalized to play for los Catrachos has been brought up time and time again. He is also very fond of Honduras and was/is overwhelmed with the way he was treated while living there.

The ONLY place this is brought up is in Honduras - NOT HERE

Even if Emilio is signed through 2011, that doesn't mean he won't leave before then. Obviously if he's offered more money in another league, he could be sold assuming a transfer fee could be agreed on. But, since DC really never stands in the way of a player leaving, that's probably a formality.

When I read this, I took it to mean that Emilio would very much like to go back to Honduras towards the end of his career. I do not take that to mean before 2011, though.

Bottom line is that he's signed for a while and will be here for as long as it's a good situation for DC. If he or the club wants to move on, then DC will get compensated. I have no problem with that.

This seems to be a situation that really doesn't amount to anything right now.

Why the ruffle then? Maybe someone is politely putting
the FO on notice that more cash will keep the stash.
He has a contract but that doesn't keep him from
aggressively negotiating a modified version. Money talks
especially when one wants more to line the nest. This
story would never have seen the light of day, unless
someone felt it was necessary to be seen.

if he wants more cash maybe he should try scoring some goals.

    It has been awhile

DC United is playing a team from Honduras today. Emilio played in Honduras for a while.
A normal interview where Honduran fans want to hear his opinion (helps sell papers).

Hopefully Emilio shows Hondurans who he is on the field, like he did against Olimpia in the last Champions Cup.

First, thanks to Chico and apqjr for doing the digging. I don't remember hearing that he is signed thru 2011. Good for us.

Didn't mean to come off like chicken little but it wasn't adding up for me.

Really need him to step up big tonight. Cruz crushed Saprissa by 4 and we are really in a hole.

Emilio did well for DC last year and is doing ok this year, but I don't see him being a long-term forward for us. Having him 1-2 more years in DC gives more than enough time for the FO to scout and bring in a better quality forward for when he leaves/we don't renew his contract. Also, if he was set to leave, it would put pressure on the front office to find a better quality forward sooner rather than later.

Let's face it, the odds are in this day and age of modern futbol that any foreign born striker brought in by DCU and who ends up scoring bunches of goals is going to be a short term player for us.

The only real exceptions are going to be if DCU values that player so much they drop DP money on him...or you have a player like Moreno who is willing to invest his career playing in MLS.

I wonder what kind of overseas offers Moreno would receive today if he was currently the Moreno Circa 1998?

he's planning to retire to honduras--its no different than virtually all "yanks abroad" who get asked if they want to "play in MLS someday" e.g. keller. it doesn't take anything away from their current club.

given his form of late, i wouldn't worry about a big money offer from some club...

If keep having mild summers like this past one, Emilio will be a waste of money. I'm torn between Emilio not scoring and low AC bills vs. Emilio popping in 20 goals and paying a ton for AC.

Just not sure which one I want.

Huh? Are you saying that Quaranta is comparable to Emilio? I disagree if so.

Santino is more like Moreno, where as Emilio is a striaght poacher/finisher like RD Arce, Lassiter, Etc.

I am sure in 1-2 years we will have some nice prospects to replace him, Crespo anyone? ;) I hear he has been looking for a top euro club right now to get playing time so he is still looked at by the Arg. NT. :p Maybe a little old though....

No doubt Moreno would be back at the EPL or Italy IMO. He made a mistake by coming here looking at it from that prospective. I will always wonder as he does what could have been had he not lost his patience and left Boro'.

Nah, Tino is more like Fred, better running at people from deep or on the wings. He can't slow the game down like Moreno.

I think the point was that Tino plays a withdrawn forward role. If he can ever actually devote himself to being up front, while Moreno is still with the team - I believe he could learn to slow the game down from that position.
As he's been forced to fill in on the wings, he can't really be expected to slow the game any. From the middle he needs to learn how a bit more, but we've only played him there a few times so far.

I agree with you, he's the most dangerous when running straight at goal because he's got quick feet to get around a defender and then get a shot or pass off quickly.....sort of like Donovan?
