At its best it is multi-level marketing. Don't know enough about it to say if it is actually a pyramid scheme though. The guy that is making the accusations is a hedge fund manager that has shorted $1billion dollars worth of Herbalife stock.
At first I thought it was a good deal for Vergara but now I'm thinking he got more than just $70 million for the club. I just don't believe in that figure especially in a market like LA and when other clubs are paying $100 mil in expansion fees. I just don't believe in this figure..... Details emerge concerning purchase price of Chivas USA, recent ...

With the exception of the flocks of Italians who made their way to the west coast in the last century, only cities most Italians know about in the USA are LA and NY.
MLS stung by Miami officials, who has stiffed David Beckham's stadium plans, so he is likely to abandon MLS Miami. Now reports say Asian investors are wooing Beckham to be part investor with them for getting Chivas USA ...... Source: David Beckham could leave MLS expansion in Miami for Chivas USA http://sports.yahoo.com/news/source...-for-chivas-usa-in-los-angeles-232552030.html
Hate that Galaxy are holding soccer camps in suburban Sac. Shouldn't SJ be doing that? http://www.lagalaxy.com/camps/blues
Money money money. Its really unfortunate tho. I bet their FO get 10x the budget we get for the academy/player development.
Wonder how much LAndy gets for this TV Ad? With royalties, he might very well end up getting paid more than he would had he gone to the WC!
If David Beckham is smart, he should abandon Miami MLS for Chivas USA (or whatever they will be called). It's pretty clear now that politically it's too expensive for Beckham to counter the opposing Miami officials and business interests who didn't want that kind of sports expansion on their port or waterfront. Besides, everytime you see Beckham in the UK press, he's always in LA anyway when he's stateside. The vision was there to do Miami (tapping into the Latin America markets), but you could do the same in LA with a bigger SoCal base of operations. It would be better for MLS and Garber anyway to first settle down the Chivas USA situation for the long-term, instead of going head-to-head with the NASL Fort Lauderdale team, who has been in South Florida now since forever.
I remember a stipulation a while back that he wasn't allowed to buy Chivas or use his option in LA. It probably changed though since Vergara was bought out. I'd tend to think Garber & MLS can sell the Chivas to an outside buyer for a lot more money than just letting Beckham use his measly $25 mil option to buy clause. They definitely would be losing out somewhere. Miami seems as good as done but maybe Beckham should try the glitz of Las Vegas or nearby San Diego?
Beckham's best option at this point should be to go with the Chivas USA where the Asian investors are inviting him in on their deal. Las Vegas and/or San Diego are the options NASL Peterson is targeting for NASL expansion possibilities due to NASL lower cost of entry fees and their need for Western expansion. No guarantee MLS or Beckham will succeed or want to be located in Las Vegas or San Diego, unless both cities follow the Sacramento Republic FC example in drawing huge crowds for USL-Pro in both cities. MLS and Garber better be careful now not to over expand like the old NASL did and flunked.
I really don't think its all that fair to compare the old NASL to MLS or even the new NASL. Its a different time now and there are so many more teams, players and soccer has been played everywhere across the country for well over 35 years. Also, many teams are self sufficient and they own their own stadia which is something that wasn't even thought of in 1980. The landscape is 100 times different and thankfully, things have progressed and the game is healthy. By 1981, we had no national team to speak of, and there was only a hope and an alleged future which was supposedly 15-20 years away but no one knew what to expect. When franchises folded one by one, sports journalists wrote off the sport as it not being that important. There is still a lot of that but now things are different. We have a national team competing in their 7th straight WC, excitement and so much more in regards to the sport that I think most larger cities with healthy populations can support an MLS club and the smaller communities can easily support an NASL or a USL team.
Nice post Falvo, and I agree with most of what you say. But what does this have to do with the fact that El Lay Sucks!!!! Go Quakes!! Fire JD and MW!! F@#$ el-lay!! - Mark
Nothing really. Other than the fact that Beckham will probably have to throw in the towel and take his option elsewhere or at least away from Tinseltown .
