    Re: Edwin Valencia

I was very impressed by his lungs at the end of the match - he'd been playing a very deep holding role most of the match, but in the last five minutes got involved all over the place.

Odd game for a '5' to shine in though, Chivas scored 3 or 4 absolute fluke goals and Paranaense had to play all up to try and get a miracle. Didn't really get to see him manage the midfield because there was a lot of longball on both sides...

    http://www.pron.com.br/editoria/esportes/news/343697/

For his part, Valencia, had a very good season and transformed himself into a symbol of the Atletico side in the national championship. No ball was lost to the midfielder, who would double himself to do his function and cover the advances of his teammates.

The disposition and strength of his marking thrilled the red-black fans and awoke the interest of other national clubs for his football. Valencia debuted with the Furacao during the 2007 Brasiliero and has scored one goal to date, but to compensate has shown himself impeccable in the marking of adversaries.

    http://furacao.com/materia.php?cod=28188

Edwin Armando Valencia is one of the most consistent players of the atleticano cast. With a soccer that combines athleticism and improved technique, in particular in the excellency in the passes and take aways, Valencia always was saved of the critiques of the fans, even during the most trying moments of this season.

Atl Paranaense just won their state cup and will face Corinthians in the Copa do Brasil.

Valencia has resigned with the Furacao for another year, but is currently out injured until June recovering from shoulder surgery.

    Re: Edwin Valencia

Thanks to Gol TV, I've seen the past two A Paranaense matches (a tie with Palmeiras and win against Corinthians) and have had an opportunity to see how Valencia has developed as a player. I've been very impressed.

Valencia plays as a '5' there only by name, because in actuality he is everywhere on the pitch, he starts off their counter attacks and provides a target to finish them, he doubles as a centreback whenever a fullback pushes forward (which is common in Brasil) and only some of the time is he playing in the center of the pitch.

He must have one hell of a reputation in Brasil because the opposition rarely takes him on, and when they do, he takes the ball away quite often. What impressed on me most is that he is playing a very cerebral game, most of the time is is sitting back playing as an overlay and then shoots the gap when a pass is sent in his direction to intercept and spark a counter. In the game with Corinthians he started atleast four or five counter attacks in this fashion that ended with shots on goal.

Would love to see him have an opportunity to play in a friendly at some point with the NT and its hard to understand why he hasn't had that chance yet.

Amen to that. This guy should have been called up years ago. He is much better than Bedoya or Marrugo.

    Re: Edwin Valencia

Agreed. Sadly this is probably the one MF spot where we have a TON of quality guys. Weve seen Aguilar, Guarin, Vargas, Bedoya, and a while ago Sanchez all play in the position. The worst part is that none of these guys asides Bedoya is a real DM, and Sanchez tho hes gone now. Theyve all had decent games, but it is a huge handicap having to play with 3 DMs at a time, and the necessity arises because none of them are natural in that position. Throwing in a athletic and ranging DM like Valencia or Sanchez would definitely open up the offensive game.

I have to disagree with ur comment on Marrugo tho. They play completely different roles. And i must say Marrugo played an enormous part in his teams offense. His value is incredible in making a strong possevive midfield and he causes it to be very flowing vertically and horizontally. The two of them together would cause incredible more mobility and security to the midfield. They need their chances to play and hopefully provide a drastic change to our play style.

    Re: Edwin Valencia

I think as a straight '5', I'd take Valencia over Guarin or Vargas because its not their natural position. Both Guarin and Vargas look so much more comfortable playing as '8's. That said, I think Sanchez has a bit more pace than Valencia, and Abel a bit more goal - but i think its CRAZY that this kid not get atleast a call up to a friendly to show his stuff.

    It's totally bizarre.

Does someone know exactly what happened when Valencia left America? I recall that he didnt play for a season anywhere and all of a sudden reappeared starting in Paranaense. I've wondered if maybe he left on a bad note and now the fed has blacklisted him.

Because it's wierd that I've never heard Lara or Pinto even mention him.

    Re: Edwin Valencia

Good point - if I recall correctly, America let his contract expire at the time and he requested a Bosman. The move was long protracted because America was really struggling financially at the time and didn't want to let him leave. He missed a good half a season. Should all be on this thread actually...

    Documento:

Since when has the brazilian and french leagues been less than the Mexican league that Lara liked to use
