Anyone that knows the political atmosphere in these parts know that nothing gets pass the good ol boys with Harris county. White just kept the machine greased up for Oliver, but at the end it was going to be his contact with county to get it all done.
See they are getting ready to load us up for next year with DPs and the stadium! Billionaires To Sell Marcellus Gas Stakes
Just to make sure everyone knows that the pipe dream of someone taking the rail to the new Dynamo Stadium from the Galleria in the next decade is just that, a dream - I saw the below story tonite, once again affirming the absolute inefficent waste of money that our little hi-tech trolley system is. http://www.khou.com/news/METRO-hits-400M-roadblock-with-Texas-AG-University-line-could-be-affected-102121419.html
Hey guys, crossing fingers for the imminent resolution of all stadium related issues for you and shovels hit dirt asap. As I do check this thread for news / renderings from time to time and <sigh> there is little, so I'm contributing some "Cheap Stadium Porn" from abroad: This is a translucent fabric covered rugby / football stadium being built in New Zealand for $158M NZ including land, or $95M NZ for the stadium itself. 30k capacity (surely modifiable). Forsyth Barr Stadium (Being Built for the 2011 Rugby WC) http://www.independentweekly.com.au...m-makes-mockery-of-adelaide-plan/1911896.aspx Kinda cool, looks tidy, would love to live in NZ where the scenery look sgreat, and where "politician" doesn't seem to be such an out of control species: Would work here in US if not Houston specifically? Prolly to much of a hot box for Houston, but somewhere cool / north. http://www.flickr.com/photos/472588...4950371871/in/set-72157624861876994/lightbox/ http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=923328 Enjoy, and hope to see real progress in Houston very soon.
The NZ (Forsyth Barr) stadium could be a good inspiration... let's see what the architect firm and contractor can agree upon here.
I don't understand why you're always negative on the rail system. Rail is awesome, and taking a train to a game would be great. It was a fantastic experience when I did that in Seattle and in DC and hope one day everyone can do it here too.
don't even need to rent a car in DC or Seattle and you can have a blast for several days just using public transportation...I just don't see Houston ever getting there...Houston is too spread out...
I think the main argument against a rail system is that they don't pay for themselves and are in fact supported by massive infusions of taxpayer money.
It's my opinion that there are and were too many people without vision dealing with public transportation in Houston over the years. That being said, I guess we're here to talk about soccer and not the short-sighted politicians and their constituency .
It appears the 2018/2022 World Cup inspection team will be visiting the George R. Brown Convention Center whilst in houston next week. Would have been good for them to have seen some major progress happening with dynamo stadium across the freeway. Hopefully the city mention the stadium to the bidding team.
I would think they would have mentioned the stadium. But they I think they'll want to sell them on the 70K capacity stadium the Texans play in over the 22K one Dynamo will have. The extra 48K (or more?) tickets sold will net a HUGE boat load of money for everybody involved. But you're right that showing commitment to the sport on a popularity level is going to help close the sell.
The new Dynamo Stadium would be just perfect for, say, a Mexico vs. Dynamo warm up match. Probably the GRB might be used as an all-purpose venue as "your local World Cup headquaters" for personal appearences and memorobilia sales. I was reading yesterday that the USA could have done much better in '94 with the overall promotion. I wouldn't expect Houston to hold the WC Final, but we should expect to be a major player in the group stages at Reliant along with Cowboys Stadium in Arlington
I don't see why it wouldn't be. but the World Cup final has to be at the new Dallas stadium. Most seats, visually impressive w/ the giant scoreboard, and guaranteed perfect conditions w/ the roof and A/C
Yea you're right. I think Jerry Jones will put on as big a dog-and-pony show for the WC. I wouldn't mind it at all if it were held in Dallas.
Yeah i was thinking more along the lines of dynamo stadium being a training venue. Reliant would always get the games. That stadium is awesome. But like you said The city can show the fifa guys that Houston is serious about soccer by highlighting the proposed Dynamo stadium as well. Its a big plus for the city.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/soc/7186359.html - Houston hosting the IBC would be huge! - It looks like MLS stadiums would be used as training sites. I assume that the new Dynamo Stadium and the revamped Robertson Stadium would be the two training sites if/when Houston hosted.
beyond huge even if we don't get multiple games. some $$$ would flow into Houston without a lot of outlay on the city or county's part.
They are great systems if you can take the train or Metro but don't live or work or shop in the METRO service territory and have to pay the extra sales tax on purchase to pay for it. Fact is (yes, fact), none of the METRO rail lines will come anywhere close to being self-sufficient operating WITHOUT considering the cost to build them. In Houston, the most efficient use of the taxpayer's dollars would be to build more HOV lanes, park n rides, bus routes, etc. rather than a large-sized version of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood trolley that hits cars on a frighteningly frequent pace. But since METRO is a sponsor of the Dynamo, you'll never hear a peep of that. They'll probably act in cahoots with METRO later to limit parking near the site (a la Reliant) and force folks to take one of the rail lines a mile or so from a larger lot.
Whatever! Just get the darned stadium built as quickly as possible. I'm watching you and San Jose go at it tonight, and those flippin' football lines are destroying the experience. Considering the past (and probably future) great success of the Dynamo, you guys should have had a SSS long ago.
Those lines used to be called "playoff time" for the Dynamo but we won't be calling them that this year.
Yea, that's what I said last night, the players used to say they liked the lines cause it reminded them it was playoff time. But this year the lines will be sorta bittersweet.
Well, if TSU is still planning on being a co-tenant in the new stadium, and I've never heard otherwise, we'll have "playoff lines" late in the season for many years to come.
And I hope it makes fans of other teams sick to their stomachs for years to come as well. I mean wtf, I saw an EPL team playing on a field with rugby lines on it last year...
