Don on now. They are talking about the name right now and Don is saying this name attaches to the community and it also is non-traditional to the U.S. community and trying to link to the international soccer community.

They are asking him what they would see big picture for MLS and he is saying this country is changing and Houston is a great soccer market and it is one of the highest rated cities to watch soccer on TV.

Asking about new to report on refurb for Robertson Stadium and long term for another stadium. He said they are looking at field surfaces and he said the future of success for this league is SSS and he said Luck has made a lot of progress. He said the community needs a soccer complex not just a soccer stadium.

Don said a lot of names were tossed around and in order to connect with the Hispanic community was not with the name but the quality of the product on the field.

Houston1836.com will be where we will get our information.

They wished him luck and were very respectful to him.

We need to call in and talk it up yo... not just to the Davis soccer hour on 790...

    Let's show everyone our enthusiasm..

Of course I'm not saying call them and talk about the roster, most would be clueless, and that's ok. There is time to learn.

It was a good interview though. No jokes or anything thrown around. Good job.

well... it has started... the first call about the new team is ripping the name... and idiot Rich Lord is making stupid arguements about it... Lord felt the name should have gone towards something that Mexicans would have been drawn to. I feel that they will understand the 1836 in the name much more than white America.

Their are saying how 1836 was a bad year for Mexicans in Texas. They don't quite understand that there were Mexicans fighting for Independence also. Idiots.

I also saw one person on Chron.com saying they were going to cancel their season ticket deposit because of the name....

I shouldn't get so upset about this. How about just supporting the stinking team for a few hours before you make fun of it and rip it.

    idiots!

I just tuned in right now (3:30 p.m.) and a guy though the name is the stupidest ever, and he's a soccer fan. I agree with him. It's real bad. We should do what the fans did in Dallas. You know, request a name change.

How is FC Dallas any different???? It stands for Football Club Dallas........ there is no real mascot or anything.. they put a cow on their logo...and they call themselves the hoops because of their uniform design....

I've talked with plenty of people that like it. Plenty of people didn't love the Texans name. It wasn't even my favorite.. but I love them because they are Houston's team. If you love your city support the team... if you don't support it because of the name, then you don't care about sports or the city anyway..

I get your point bford, but in reality, the "FC" in FC Dallas only "implies" Football Cub it doesn't even mean Football Club. The official name of FC Dallas is not Football Club Dallas and it's not Futbol Club Dallas, it's just FC Dallas. The F stands for futbol, the C stands for club, but the official name is FC Dallas (thanks again texgator).

The Texans name sucked and quite franklly still sucks. Astros was a big time step down from Colt .45's IMO. What is an Astro anyway, a dog on a 1960's cartoon? Name the team after the nickname of the stadium? People have overlooked that over the decades and I predict they will with the 36ers. Look, you're not going to make everyone happy, even people who are fans of the sport (eg MLS doesn't equal Euro or Mexican soccer fan support).

Relax, people who support teams/clubs only because of their name are flakes. 36ers win, folks will come around. Just ask every band wagon fan on earth . . .winning is everything.

The name 1836 will speak more to the soccer community than the majority of monster truck rally, golf and arena football fans calling Rich Lord. So what, one guy who states he's a soccer fan says the name sucks, he probably supports his son or daughter's team "Lightning, Attack, Pink Panthers or Magic" . . something like that. you think he actually supports the team name or his kid?

The international crowd in Houston and a good number of traveling teams and area soccer clubs will support the club and even the name 1836. Several of the internationals in Houston support clubs like The Hammers, Hummingbirds, Grasshoppers, S-Pulse, The Strongest, Foxes (Zorros), Cement Mixers and even numeric named teams like Hannover 96. the typical Billy Joe-Bob Houston sports radio caller is not the person Luck and company are courting.

Anyway, any talk of the team on any station is better than no talk.

Can you source that my man? Besides Wikipedia, I mean (garbage in, garbage out).

EDIT - Update: From the FC Dallas Website

    I guess that's close enough.

In a situation like this, apply the 80/20 rule. It's most important that the concept appeal to 80% of the target audience, not everyone. The name is solid and will work well given time.

Most people in Dallas thought FC Dallas 96 was kind of weird at first, and now we all love it. I like the logo, the color scheme and the name. Call them the Rovers as a nickname and you're there. Good job and good luck to Houston. The naysayers can go take a flying leap.

I understand what you are saying. This new name reminds me of Munich 1860; that sounds pretty good. But Houston 1836 is just not as good.

I believed from the beginning, that if there were no good options for a nickname, you should just name your team FC (city name) or the other way around. I would have preferred Houston FC, but unfortunately, that was not an option on their poll. My personal favorite would have been Houston Wanderers; I believe both of these would have been better received by both soccer lovers and haters in this city.

Nobody is riping this team up, but understand that some fellow Houstonians think it just should have been better than what was selected. I believe they (MLS) rushed the creative process and therefore we got what we got. I care too much for this city, and I want nothing but the best for her. Do you believe it is the best name to represent our city? I believe it's not good enough; we can do better.

EDIT: I'm not trying to say that my opinion is shared by the majority. My mistake.

Thanks for the recap, some of us work in electro-magnetic hells that block AM radio.

Now we need to start educating the sports radio hosts.

Not to mention that teams like Munich and Hannover are referencing the year the CLUB was created, not the year the city was founded. To me, it makes the club look silly from the get go. Someone from Germany sees that and they will laugh their arse off. I'm no fan of the '96 that appears in the FCD logo and I'm glad it never became a common part of the name.

But there are a lot of people that like 1836, just because you don't doesn't mean the majority doesn't. There was a poll here with the options that MLS offered and 1836 got half the votes. Maybe if FC or Wanderers where options they would have won, but I doubt it. Overall I think most people like the name, but I could be wrong.

    http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=282715 Name poll

    http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=295277 After seeing logo poll

Both of those point to the majority being happy with it (at least on Bigsoccer.com).

'Futbol' fans from Germany wouldn't hit their dog in the ass with MLS...much less waste their time giggling about what their names are.

...and if they did, they would've been laughing at the 'burn' since 1995.

Actually Houston still doesn't have a nickname. So you can call them whatever you dang well desire. 'Houston 1836' is the name of the club, 1836 is not a "nickname".

You can do better? Have at it sonny boy, the possibilities are yours to embrace.
