If you compare the three codes this is what you find:

In the NRL Sonny Bill Williams was the highest paid player in the league before he moved to France, and he was on about $500,000 a season. So on average, a "normal" league player would be getting a lot less then that. Also comparing that salary to those in the past you'd see that when Mundine the Great :D was playing NRL and was the highest paid player, he was on about $600,000-$700,000 a year, so it's never been in the millions.

As for AFL, if you have a look at what has to be one of the best forwards in the game (Brendon Fevola), he is currently one of the highest paid players in the league and is on a contract that's around $700,000 a season (as is West Coast's Dean Cox), so again, if you average that out to an average player, i'd imagine they'd be making around $200,000 a season, of course rookies would be making much less. And if like the NRL, you compare it to past greats, then you'd see that Koutoufides was once the highest paid player in the AFL and he was on 1 million a year. And i might be wrong about this, but no one has ever gotten that much since Kouta.

In the A-league, the average player makes under $100,000 a season with rookies making around $40,000-$60,000. So on average it has the lowest paid professional footballers in the country, although at the same time has the highest paid individual player (John Aloisi) who is on a contract of around $1.4 million per season.

You have to remember that the A-league is not the only code that has a salary cap, and that although the other two codes have much more money to spend, they still can't afford to pay there players millions of dollars a season like for example they do in the US.

Here's a breakdown of the salary caps for each code:

NRL: $4.1 million for 25 players, avarage salary of $164,000
AFL: $8.5 million for 38 players, average salary of $223,684
A-league: $1.85 million for 19 players, average salary of $97,368

Of course that's not what all the players get, but on an average it should give you more or less an idea of what the salary is like between the different codes.
