From where I'm sitting, and it's a high perch, I can see only five nations that have better soccer than America: Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Some think that's a ridiculous claim, but is it? Right now, and for the past ten or so years, America has consistently played amongst the ten best teams in the nation. In 2002, we were ridiculously blown call goal from winning the World Cup in Korea (yes, had we beaten Germany, we would have walked to the winners circle with ease). Our professional league is without a doubt the sixth best in the world and only getting better and at a scary fast pace. Within twenty years, it will be the world's best professional league. But American fans, swayed by the anti-American sentiment in the rest of the soccer world, seem afraid to grasp just how much of a soccer power America has become in the past decade. By the way they tell it, tying England is a great accomplishment. Forget the fact that America has played far better soccer than England for the last decade (not to mention having a 2-0-1 all-time record against the English in competitive matches) or that England has been irrelevant since 1966. I mean, beating teams like England, Portugal, and Bosnia should be expected by now because that's how America does it. And has been doing it for the last ten years. And it's only going to get better. America has the best youth soccer in the world, and it's only getting better. Sure, we have yet to win a World Cup, but we've only been good enough to win one since 2002. And the odds (and FIFA) haven't favored us yet. But we're getting close. We should consider anything less than a World Cup semifinal appearance a disappointment. EVERY single World Cup. It's time to be proud and realistic about America soccer. We are a powerhouse NOW. We don't have to look to the future. Within a generation, we will be in soccer what Germany and Brazil have been for the past generation. So get used to it. Accept the fact that we are indeed a world soccer power. Embrace it. Brag about it. Expect it. Hold out your chest and make fun of the nations we have surpassed (England, Mexico, France, and the rest of the hasbeens). MURIKA!
