Word in the UK is that Tim Howard might be our first name... Been a bit of wheeling and dealing involving Everton lately, like Barry going there on loan. Thoughts?
Not really a fan of goal keepers as designated players. But it would be nice to have a well known American on the team.
A rumour yes, source is an Everton ITK..No idea about his track record really. I´m more intrigued by the idea of this building from behind I must confess, all rumours we have heard points at midfielders and one goalie.
Building from the back is always the way to go. If your offense isn't clicking but your backline is solid and letting nothing in, your at least able to compete. I'm not sure about Howard as a DP but he would be a great player and a great local story all rolled up in one.
I´m really expecting the rumour mill to start producing names out of the blue next year..Why not Howard as a DP? A goalie, a midfielder and perhaps a striker and you got a nice core of a team out of three DP´s
DP are expensive and a massive blow to any salary cap ($350,000 now). If NYCFC spends one of them on a goalie then they only have 2 more to use in midfield or on a forward. I'm thinking NYC will want to have more than 2 DP field players.
Ibrahimovic said a few days ago he'd like to play outside of Europe after his contract expires with PSG. He'd probably be my top realistic choice at this point.
This. And also he'll be at that age that European players start to think about making the trek across the Atlantic.

Something tells me that by 2015 there will be 4 dp slots giving man city and there money will influence it, plus all big names being linked to LA or NY,
From a very informative article at http://soccer.si.com/2014/01/10/kreis-new-york-city-fc-preparing-to-step-into-the-mls-spotlight/ • Reyna is already pursuing Designated Players The U.S. Hall of Famer and All-Time Best XI midfielder told me that he and other club officials have already met with “more than 10” potential big-name signings, either with their agents or the players themselves. NYCFC will use the maximum allotment of three DPs, whose salaries are not limited by the league’s salary budget cap. “We have to be very aggressive and active in an offensive mode with player recruitment and the player search,” Reyna said. “Our approach, with Jason and I, is to go find the players we want to fit into how he wants to build the team. And not just the right people that are important on the field, but probably more important off the field. Toronto did a great job bringing Michael [Bradley] back. He’s the right guy, a top professional. Those are the kind of people we’re looking for.” Reyna said he’s enjoying the DP search process. “It’s a lot of fun, to be honest,” he explained. “I get to travel and watch games and meet with players and their reps. Every week there’s a new name being thrown at us.”
