If the club started in the next couple of years, who would you want as our first DP signing? Would you go for a big name just to bring the fans in, or do you think we should take the Red Bulls approach and go for someone who isn't as well known, but will really make an impact and can improve the team? (Juan Pablo Angel)
I think being the capital of the world, and def the media capital of the world we would have to go big. As far as who? Ronaldinho would be nice lol.
I think it have to be a big name to attract fans and draw attention to the franchise. I think Ronaldo is a big possibility, but that all depends on when NY gets a franchise.
This seemed like a appropriately named, if older thread. Just idle speculation, but I was bored and I thought it might be fun to discuss. Teams like RSL will probably never have this discussion, but NYC will probably have it many times. What DPs do you think will join NYCFC in 2015? My guess is most of the oldies but goodies like Diego Forlan and Frank Lampard will be too old in 2 years (well they are probably already too old). But others might be right at the older but still got it Thierry Henry/Robbie Keane age (of course, the Steinbrenners and Mansour might decide to buy Hazard, Neymar and Messi for all we know). Just some random ideas: Ibrahimović will be 33 in 2 years David Villa will be 32 in 2 years Defoe will be 31 in 2 years Huntelaar will be 31 in 2 years Who you got?
What about Robben, Pirlo may be too old but def would appeal to Italian American population or kaka might be a good fit.
I could definitely see Ibrahimovic coming to MLS in two years. I'd throw Tevez's name in there as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see at least one former City player coming to NY.
Yes.... http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/182723/uk-footballers-surprise-local-kids-on-west-side-field
LOL Carlos Tevez, Pablo Zabaleta and Joe Hart opened the door to a possible arrival to NYC FC http://www.mlssoccer.com/es/news/ar...oe-hart-abren-las-puertas-una-posible-llegada
Great player who you could build a roster around. But he seems like a EPL only guy at this point. It's too bad because he would be only 29 in 2015.
He also runs a private charity (We pay footballers way to much!) so there might be wheels within wheels in such a deal..But he´s my choice A more likely name might be Zabaleta who are interested in getting into coaching eventually A marquee signing like Tevez or similar I find a bit unlikely. Rooney perhaps unless he slims down a bit.
This is a good read: Manchester City are considering offering Gareth Barry a two year extension to his current contract, with the proviso that the final year is spent in New York on loan for the first season of the club’s new MLS franchise, New York City. http://www.cheshire-today.co.uk/16250/manchester-citys-barry-lined-up-for-new-york-city-mls-role/
Hmm, not sure how reliable that paper is but Barry is an old reliable pro, not perhaps a glamour player though but a tough guy making few mistakes on the pitch. A young team could really improve with him around.
A quick look at the MCFC squad and dismissing players likely to leave within two seasons we got a number of players in the 2015 +30 age group that would still do the job. Tevez, Barry, Zabaleta, Lescott, Yaya-Toure..
