I'm not going to write much of a review on round 12, but FCN once again dropped points after playing Champions League, which just shows, that they are not quite as strong as last season, and that they are going to suffer because of a small budget, even though they still have a very good team. OB odense on the other hand will be happy about the fact that it was some of their new players who made the difference, the Hungarian international Krisztián Vadócz who scored twice and danish international Michael Silberbauer who made an assist..

FC København also seem to have trouble playing Europa cup and Superliga, because FCK were also in huge problems against newly promoted Esbjerg and were in fact lucky not to lose, when you look at how this match went down. Esbjerg really should have been leading by more than one goal at half-time and FCK only looked good and were highly efficient in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but from that point on, they once again lost control, but still managed to escape with a 2-2 result.

AGF Aarhus really are doing well at the moment, and it is mainly their young players impressing, while some of the older key players from last season, like Martin Jørgensen, Søren Berg and Søren Larsen now mainly are watching from the bench or even from the stands, not because they have become poor, but because the young players are impressing and showing that AGF have more depth in their squad than you would expect. In this match against SønderjyskE it was mainly the former Brøndby talent Osama Akharraz showing his worth for AGF by being involved in all 3 goals, as he was fouled, resulting in a penalty and the first goal, just as he made the assists for the 2nd and 3rd goal as well...... The bad news for AGF this past week was of course that AGF legend Peter Graulund chose to retire due to the Spinal disc herniation he suffered a few years back, that led to surgery and kept him out for quite some time. Unfortunately this injury has now come back to haunt him, so he has decided to retire, because of the pain. :( ... so goodbye to one of the all-time top scorers of the Superliga, who also managed to score 100 goals for AGF before he retired.

Though AaB Aalborg are still at the top of the table, they had lost their past two games to the two bottom teams Esbjerg ans Silkeborg, so they were in need of a win against Brøndby, while Brøndby coach Auri Skarbalius on the other hand seemed in great danger of getting fired, were to lose this match. The young Brøndby team did try to put up a good fight, but it's difficult to see an actual plan or what their tactics really are, which also became their downfall in this match, since a highly efficient AaB team quite simply took advantage of the usual Brøndby problems in defense and managed to take home a deserved win.

Quite Surprisingly Auri Skarbalius kept his job as head coach, while Brøndby instead have hired the former Getafe and Blackburn assistant manager John Jensen, though not as a coach or an assistant, but as some sort of a consultant until the winter break I believe... a very strange and desperate move, but my guess is, that Brøndby now are in so big financial trouble, that they quite simply cant afford to sign a new head coach, so considering that John Jensen is a former Brøndby legend, he is probably doing this job for free, to give a helping hand. Though I seriously doubt it will work.... The Brøndby debt to present and former players, is btw growing by the minute and has almost passed $5.2 million (DKK 30 million)... This website is keeping track of their debt, that they need to pay in the near future, and surly before the end of this season, if they are not to be forced to declare bankruptcy : http://fodbold.ougar.dk/junk/bif_feriepenge.php

Another club in even deeper financial trouble is FC Midtjylland, that has recently revealed a $6.4 million budget deficit, despite actually trying to make the accounts look better by adding a $2.6 million "consulting fee" profit from one of their major shareholders Shrinivas Dempo, though it in reality was payment for some new shares. (they are able to do this because Shrinivas Dempo own a football club in India and FCM are to help them start a new football academy for some of the money they have received by selling new shares to Dempo ). So in reality the FCM deficit was more like $ 9 million, which is around twice as much as the deficit they produced the year before. They have now cut 33% of their wage budget and they still have a Net capital of around $ 4.5 million, that is left of the around $ 12.5 million they received from Shrinivas Dempo last year. So most of this money is now lost and they admit that they will soon be on the brink of bankruptcy, if they don't manage make some further adjustments and find some more money. Their main problem is, that they are far from able to sell as many talented players from their otherwise successful academy as they used to before the financial crisis, and they price they can get has also gone down, at the same time they have been losing some major sponsorships, just as their poor results are now hurting them financially, due to the loss of TV-money. So quite frankly they are in deep trouble, and of course it didn't help the matter that they also lost to Randers in this round. FCM have been terrible away from home this season, only being able to pick up 1 point in 6 away games. At the same time the loss of depth in the summer transfer window, has really hurt because they have suffered a string of injuries in defense. Though it was not the case in this match, their games are often lost in the last 30 minutes, when their opponents simply have better "game-winning" options on the bench.

The 'New Firm' at it is called in Denmark, between the two big Copenhagen based clubs, never became much of a match this time, despite the high attendance. Though FCK far from looked impressive, and probably were more worried about their Europa League away game against Stuttgart, their rather poor performance was more than enough to secure the win against a Brøndby team in crisis. FCK too an early lead and as you can see, Brøndby then manage to keep most possession, but despite playing a fairly good match, Brøndby never really managed to be much of a threat. You could of cause argue, that it is not bad for a bottom team in the Superliga to lose by only one goal away against the league leaders, even being able to keeping most possession, but in compare with Esbjergs excellent 2-2 performance against FCK, this was far from as good.

Though the weather was terrible and it was on a Monday, almost 12,000 ppl showed up mainly to celebrate the now retired AGF legend Peter Graulund before the match. The striker managed to score 100 goals in 216 games for AGF before he was forced to retire due to the Spinal disc herniation he suffered a few years back, that had returned to haunt him this season... Despite playing some years abroad in Germany and Sweden, not to forget two seasons in the Danish 1. Division with AGF, he still managed to become 6th on the all-time Superliga top scorers list. So it is a true AGF and Superliga legend that has now said goodbye :

As for the match, then AGF seemed a bit rusty from start, after the long NT break, while Randers looked more determined and sharp, so it was only deserved that Randers were leading at half-time. However, the match was turned upside down in a second half where AGF took charge and dominated from start to finish. The two goal were exactly the same, two headers scored from the very same spot at the front post after a corner kick, so you would almost think that you were watching a replay of the exact same goal. AGF should have wont the match though, considering the huge opportunities by Mate Vatsadze, but the Randers keeper and 'man of the match' David Ousted was making some brilliant saves for the visitors.

FCN have had bigger problems creating opportunities this season in compare with last season and Silkeborg were taking an ultra-defensive approach with did not make it more easy for the home team. So in the first 70 minutes or so, the Silkeborg game plan worked quite well, while the defending champions mainly were forced to try some long range attempts. However, as the visitors grew more tired in the second half, FCN finally managed to stretch them thin, when FCN captain Nicolai Stokholm served a brilliant pass from the center of the pitch to Joshua John on the left wing, who then curled in a cross right to the head of Morten Nordstrand, who could hardly miss the target. This goal of course totally ruined Silkeborg's game plan and as they where too tired to strike back, it made it easy for FCN to finish them off a few minutes later.

    2-1 Nicklas Helenius (86)
    Attendance: 6,888

Lineups and match stats from Football-Lineups.com

AaB Aalborg looked rather poor, while SønderjyskE not only missued a penalty early in the match, when Lasse Vibe clearly was fouled inside the box, after a brilliant pass from Conor O'Brien, but they were also the most dangerous looking side throughout this match. O'Brien who played an excellent match for the visitors and also made it to the 'Team of the week' and their quick wingers made life difficult for a poorly playing AaB team, so when the visitors finally took the lead in the 72th minute, it seemed like they would take home a deserved and easy win. However, AaB somehow managed to strike back almost straight away, and at the end of the match, the young AaB striker Nicklas Helenius in a sudden stroke of brilliance, made an excellent move to get past a SønderjyskE defender and secured the victory, while the SønderjyskE players could hardly understand how they managed to lose this match.

The match between Odense and FCM became quite dramatic. OB dominated most of the first 45 minutes and took a deserved lead after some sloppy FCM defending. In the second half the home team looked much more aggressive... and perhaps a bit too much for their own good since Izunna was sent off after making two horrible fouls on an excellent playing Krisztián Vadócz. Actually, each of those fouls could have been a straight red card, but off he went after the second yellow card and less than 10 minutes later it was the Odense striker Marcus Pedersen who was sent off. Though his second yellow card seemed quite strange. In any case, the rough play all added up to no less than 8 minutes of injury time in which FCM managed to get the equalizer.

Yes! Hallenius scoring that important and desicive winner! What a comeback despite being the poorer playing team for most part! Shows the spirit of the side. Wonderful and I´m in total shock right now. Only 3 points trailing mighty Copenhagen. Sure they won´t win the league but still a fantastic first half of the season for sure. Keep it up Aab!

Good attendance in Aarhus against Randers. Aarhus not far off the leaders still....Europa position to next year for Aab and Aarhus!??

Aron Johannson with an impressive performance in the league thus far.

If I have to make a prediction, then I think AaB is going to drop to 4th place in the league at the end of the season, because of their lack of depth, while FCK, FCN and AGF are going to fight for for the championship and medals.... but yes, I belive AaB are going to qualify for Europe.

Do anyone think that Brøndby would have the same shaky life that AGF had though the 00's balancing on the egde between Superliga and First Division dropping down a season here and there? ... or would they somehow pull though (by firing their coach, most likely in the winter break i'd guess) and get a big cash injection, given that they're seen as to big to fail for the surroundings in outer CPH?

Sounds reasuring indeed Ceres! I really hope so.

On another note I see that Odense isn´t prolonging with Johansson. It seems as if they are putting more emphesis on their youger talents, letting them get a chance to shine there!? Johansson is 34 years roughly. I know he´s a good passer of the ball but have gotten a bit slow in the latter years. But he´s been decent this season thus far with the coach Troels Bech? A kind of football suiting the swede better I guess? It looks as if a club in Sweden is intrested. I think they are getting a player that still have some gas left in the tank so to speak.....!?

Ceres, what do you think? Will Djurgården get a player still having a few decent years left....?

Brøndby are now doing all the same mistakes AGF used to do in the past... poor management, signing expensive NT players at random, not really thinking if they players they sign actually fit in, or make a good team... then getting rid of one coach after the other... good player suddenly perform poorly when they move to Brøndby, just as it used to be the case at AGF, because the squad has no depth and the club has has no actual plan for the future, it's all about damage control and nothing else at the moment. They are not using more young players, because they have a plan, but simply because they need to save money... and the young players they actually let go (like Osama Akharraz and Mike Jensen) are really the kind of players they should have build their future on.... newspapers are btw now saying that they have partly sold their young striker Simon Makienok to an investor for around $900k, so that the investor get most of a future transfer fee, if he is sold, while Brøndby get the $900k to keep the club from going bankrupt before the winter break.... the kind of move AGF also did in the past, when they were in some financial trouble....

AGF were living in the past, thinking of their past glory, and never believed that they some day could end up in the Danish 1. Division, which is also exactly what now has happened to Brøndby. They are living in the same kind of dream, still thinking that they should be a top-6 team, so they don't really believe that they are in real danger of relegation, even now when they are dead last. They are also talking about signing reinforcements in the winter break, though they have no money and are not able to pay their debts.... In fact, they cant fire their coach, because they have no money to sign a proper replacement.... So yes, I think they are going down.

OB Odense have been cutting away most of their most expensive players this season, no doubt because they also have been struck badly by the financial crisis. They have just been better than Brøndby, FCM and AaB at hiding it from newspapers... or you could say, that while the focus has been on Brøndby, FCM and AaB, they have managed to paint a picture of a strong club that is just trying a fresh start with a new director of football, a new coach, new style of play and using more younger talented players...

However, fact of the matter is that they have cut their wage budget considerably, which now is difficult to hide. Their defense stinks and the squad lack depth... getting rid of Andreas Johansson is mainly about getting rid of his high wages and not much else... Sure, he has become older and a bit slower, so he is not the same player as he used to be when he won the Danish Championship with AaB Aalborg and took part in their Europa Cup success, but he is still a good experienced player that young talents can lean on and learn from at training and in the games, which makes him a valuable player to have in a team.

To me, they are going to need miracles of biblical proportions if they are to avoid the drop. Tonight Brøndby lost again quite comprehensively, this time at home to an OB-side that really doesn't strike me as being that impressive. But 3-0 away IS by and large an impressive victory and it didn't help Brøndby's case neither on the night nor in the coming weeks that Dario Dumic got sent straight off for a hard tackle from behind with a little over 10 minutes remaining. Their next two matches are against an equally unimpressive Silkeborg-side - a cup-match and a league match. Brøndby would most likely want to sacrifice the cup, but they are so low on confidence that they could end up losing both - or winning both, because Silkeborg are just as weak!

Brøndby has no money and I'm sure it's not because they trust in Auri that they keep sticking with him - they just cannot afford to sack him! And while Auri Skarbalius certainly seems to me to be an allround nice and sympathetic guy, he just doesn't seem like a top-manager and never has.

The match between Brøndby and Odense was actually quite entertaining, but that was mainly due to the fact that both teams are equally horrible at defending.... Brøndby got some very good midfielders on paper, much like the "dream team" AGF were able to field in midfield the last time they suffered relegation, so they were able to dominate OB at times, but good midfielders are not of much use when the defense stinks and the strikers are not able to score goals... so OB then of course won the match, because they simply got better strikers... or perhaps I should rather say, that they got the more skillful strikers, because they are not really all that efficient either...

OB's young striker Rasmus Falk remind me of Brian Laudrup, when you look at his skills and moves. He also caused AGF some trouble last week, when AGF beat OB by 4-2 in Odense, but unlike Laudrup, he clearly still lack the ability to score goals, which is also why he has not yet been picked up be a bigger foreign club. But he was the major difference between OB and Brøndby in this match, scoring a goal and making an assist... Just like when AGF suffered relegation, Brøndby seem fooled by the fact that they got some great midfielders, but forget that their defense is horrible and they do not really have enough strikers or midfielders who are able to score the needed goals... sure they score a goal now and then, but it is far from enough to escape relegation.

It´s such a pitty seing this mighty Bröndby club in such a mess! Their supportership is amazing. I keep on watching all these fantastic videos of these Bröndby fans. Some of the most impressive supportership in Northern Europe together with AIK and maybe also Malmö, if we count Scandinavian clubs......

The official 'Superliga player of the month' award, October 2012
The young AGF Aarhus play maker Casper Sloth has officially been selected as 'Player of the month' ... FC Nordsjælland centre back Jores Okore came in second, while the AGF Aarhus winger Akharraz came in 3rd :

Because of a tough schedule, the FC Nordsjælland coach chose to rest 4 of their regular starters from the 1-1 CL match against Juventus, so Parkhurst, Adu, Lorentzen and Beckmann were missing in the starting 11. Still, FCN for the first time were able to handle their post Europa Cup match better than FC København, since FCN took home a slim but hard earned 1-0 victory against an injury struck AaB Aalborg team that were missing their two central midfielders Würtz and Augustinussen. FC København on the other hand lost their away match against AC Horsens... The most entertaining game was the match in Odense between OB and AGF Aarhus. Despite missing their Superliga topscorer Aron Jóhannsson and also Hjalte Nørregaard in central midfield, due to injuries, it was still AGF dominating and especially the young 'Superliga player of the month' Casper Sloth and the former Brøndby talent Osama Akharraz impressing and making the difference for the visitors from Aarhus.

The top match between AGF and FC København in Aarhus became a bit of a disappointment. It was very tactical from start and the two teams did not really leave any space for the opponents to create real opportunities, so it was a long range "lucky punch" attempt by Bolaños that gave FCK the lead, but at that point the match was also ruined for the home team, when AGF captain Steffen Rasmussen was knocked out by Andreas Cornelius' knee in a duel in the box, so he he had to be replaced in the 16th minute by reserve keeper Emil Ousager, who unfortunately did a very poor job. He could have done better at the first FCK goal and was clearly to blame for the second goal, which he also was quick to admit after the match.

But fact of the matter is, that injuries and match bans suddenly are piling up at AGF at the moment, so in this match they were missing Superliga topscorer Aron Jóhannsson, the experienced central midfielder Hjalte Nørregaard, while the big AGF weakness is in right back position, where they have been fielding their young left back reserve Mikkel Kirkeskov. So with their captain also being knocked out early in this match and AGF also missing their top scorer, it became an uphill battle against an FC København team that on the other hand was helped along by the "lucky punch" goal by Bolaños. In the end it was a deserved win for the visitors, though the match became a big disappointment, considering how well AGF have been playing of lately.... and AGF also ran into even further trouble since full back Mikkel Kirkeskov and key right winger Stephan Petersen received yellow cards that will keep them both out of the game against Horsens.

Defending champions FC Nordsjælland once again took home a narrow win, this time away against SønderjyskE.... and like in the match between AGF and FCK, it was a rather tactical match from start with few opportunities, so not surprisingly the first goal was by a header from a corner kick. However, the equalizer by FCN was an excellent goal that also earned the well playing American right back Michael Parkhurst a place in the 'team of the week'. He received the ball on the right flank, passed the ball to Mikkel Beckmann and then made a good run into the box where he received a back-heal pass from Beckmann and then made the assist, showing the value of highly attacking minded full backs. Beckmann later gave FCN the lead when he followed up after a shot that hit the top bar. SønderjyskE did try to strike back in the last 10 minutes or so, and also managed an attempt that struck the post, but they did not manage to get the equalizer.

FC Midtjylland are still in all kinds of trouble financially, which also has been showing on the pitch this season after they cut their wage budget by around 33% in the summer transfer window, but despite of a very good start, AaB Aalborg also lack some dept in their squad and rely on some very young players. So the result of this match seemed to depend very much on who could score the first goal.... and it was the experienced Swedish midfielder Petter Andersson who secured the visitors the advantage through an excellent solo-performance. The former FC Groningen midfielder is finally looking better and better for FCM after a rather slow start at the club, trying to settle in and find his place in the team. The early goal allowed FCM to mainly sit back and really hurt AaB through some fast break mainly from the flanks, which also gave them a second goal before half-time, though some poor AaB defending also was to blame. But as we have also seen before this season, the young AaB players never give up and not surprisingly it was the young AaB midfielder and top scorer Kasper Kusk showing the way for the home team just before the break and they probably also should have equalized, but FCM managed to withstand the pressure in the second half and in the end FCM captain Kristian Bak Nielsen sealed the win in 4 minutes injury time, by yet another solo-performance.

At the bottom of the table, Brøndby Suffered a very humiliating 0-3 home defeat against an OB Odense team that was trying to recover from their own 2-4 home humiliation against AGF the week before.... ... As written before, Brøndby got a fairly strong looking midfield, at least on paper, and they are also able to keep possession and play some nice attacking minded football at times, but just like when AGF suffered relegation with a "dream team" midfield, the Brøndby defense stinks and they lack midfielders and strikers who are able to score the needed goals. There is not really anything wrong with their fighting spirit, but the Brøndby defenders really don't possess the skills or speed for a high pressure attacking minded style of play, so really they should be more defensive minded and standing low in defense, but instead they are neither defending low or able to keep a high pressure. So it is not by chance that they make stupid defensive mistakes and are not able to score goals... it has been like this all season and I'm pretty sure they are going to suffer relegation, unless they change their style of play .. and Odense are btw not much better in defense right now, they just have better strikers than Brøndby....

As written in an earlier post, the injuries and match bans are now really forcing the AGF coach to dig deep and field some young inexperienced reserves. Especially the AGF defense is stretched thin and also the midfield was badly struck in this away match in Horsens, since AGF were missing their usual right back and also key right winger Stephan Petersen which Horsens really managed to take advantage of, because they were especially preying on the defensive mistakes made by the AGF defense and right winger, while at the same time using their physical advantage to "crush" the more light-footed but also physical weaker young AGF midfield. Though young Casper Sloth did a fine job for AGF as usual, it was still difficult to hide that AGF were fielding a midfield with an average age of only 20.7 years, while Horsens is probably the most physically strong team in the Superliga. So this was mainly a tactical triumph for the home team, knowing exactly which "buttons" to push against a very young looking AGF, which then also lead to a red card to AGF's Davit Devdariani who lost his temper in the 81th minute, pushing Horsens midfielder Steffen Kielstrup to the ground, after some rough fouls made by the Horsens midfielder on Devdariani... In any case, it was a deserved win to a Horsens team that right now seem in top shape, while AGF now are in even further trouble, since both Devdariani and key left back Adam Eckersley are now going to miss the next difficult match against FC Nordsjælland, due to match bans.

FC Nordsjælland is not really a physical strong team by Danish Superliga standards and their tough schedule with CL and Superliga games now perhaps seem to have worn them out a bit... Parkhurst and young Okore did not look too good when Randers took the lead in the very first minute, and Okore made some unusual mistakes throughout this match and later told the Danish NT coach that he need some rest due to an injury, so he will not be playing in the NT friendly this week against Turkey. Parkhurst on the other hand managed to rectify his mistake only a few minutes after the Randers goal, when he made the assist for the equalizer.

Unfortunately for FCN, both their full backs, Parkhurst and Mtiliga , were later booked and are both serving a one-match ban in the next match against AGF Aarhus, just as FCN are also going to be missing their key offensive player Mikkel Beckmann who suffered an injury (sprained ankle) and is out for two weeks. It is still unsure if their key centre back Okore will be able to play, but FCN now do seem to suffer due to the tough schedule. The fact of the matter is, that the Randers players seemed more energetic as the match progressed and also seemed like they were going to take home the win, if not for the late penalty, that FCN captain Nicolai Stokholm was able to take advantage of. But a tough match and hard earned 2-2 result for the defending champions who are now having problems keeping up with FC København at the top of the table, while Randers really have impressed so far this season, especially considering that they were playing 1. Division last season...

The only team Brøndby have managed to beat so far this season is Silkeborg, so this was a bottom clash they could not afford to lose, while this on the other hand was to be the last chance for Keld Bordinggaard to prove that he was the right man for the job as Silkeborg head coach, and it was Silkeborg looking like the better team in the first 45 minutes with the old experienced former Bolton Wanderers defender/striker Henrik Pedersen showing the way. He expect to retire this winter and was in the starting line-up for the first time this season, but his experience and physical strength was greatly needed for a real bottom clash like this and it also paid off when Pedersen, despite his lack of pace, was able to outsmart and outmuscle Brøndby captain Clarence Goodson. However, it was the Brøndby coach who was able to make the right adjustments for the second half, bringing on target man Makienok, who managed to turn the match around by scoring twice and Rommedahl who was involved in both goals and made an important assist... So a highly important win for Brøndby and that last decisive goal in one minute injury time, became the end of Silkeborg head coach Keld Bordinggaard who was fired after the match, and replaced by Viggo Jensen who has coached Silkeborg twice before and is more the right kind of coach for a tough and tight relegation battle, with his more cautious approach and his great expertise regarding set pieces, which no doubt will come in handy in the games to come.

In round 17 we saw the very first Randers win against Odense in 36 years and it was the former Odense winger Jonas Borring who sealed the victory in the very last minute.... The new Silkeborg coach Viggo Jensen managed to secure an important away win against SønderjyskE, mainly through a brilliant tactical change, using Dennis Flinta in central midfield, but we also saw some horrible goalkeeping from both teams, which has been a huge problem for SønderjyskE so far this season. So they are now looking for a new goalkeeper and have released Håkon Opdal, who has been a regular flop the short time he got to play for the club ... in the match between AaB Aalborg and AC Horsens, it was a deserved and fairly easy win for the home team... in fact, Horsens were more close to making an owngoal than an equalizer. Still, according to a reliable source, Horsens are not going to sign a new striker in the winter break, despite the lack of of a real goal-getter.

At the very top of the table FC København once again managed to show, that they are two different teams with and without Nicolai Jørgensen. He seem quite irreplaceable, so after he was subbed out due to an injury in the 38th minute, all the attacking power and creativity seemed to disappear, while the visitors FC Midtjylland on the other hand managed to take control and dominate a more and more passive looking FCK team that were a bit lucky to escape with all 3 points in the end...

As I have been writing, Brøndby do have some very good midfielders and have playing some fairly nice football, but they have been just terrible in defense and highly inefficient in attack. In the important bottom clash against Esbjerg, Brøndby produced no less than 32 attempts, but only 7 were on target and at the end of the day they had to settle for a 2-2 draw against a highly efficient Esbjerg side, that only were in need of 3 attempts on target to score their two goals. Still, Simon Makienok now finally seem to be in top shape for Brøndby and they desperately need him to keep scoring, if they are to escape relegation. As for Esbjerg, then it was their Norwegian midfielder Magnus Lekven who saved the day by scoring the equalizer. Lekven really has been a great signing and a good man for Esbjerg so far this season. Financially Brøndby are in terrible shape and have just revealed that they expect a €33 million or $43 million deficit this season, though most of deficit is due to a write-down of asset, especially the value of Brøndby Stadium, but they are also troubled by the debt to present and former players, as I have earlier mentioned and the fact that they still have not managed to find a main sponsor.

FC København have now managed to get a nine-point gap to FCN and AaB Aalborg at the top of the Superliga, but considering how they have played of lately, the lead is more impressive on paper than in reality. SønderjyskE took the lead in 31th minute and also came close to make it 2-0 before FCK managed to equalize early in the second half. Then came some strange refereeing, disallowing what seemed to be two perfectly good gaols, as you can also see in the highlights below, before FCK once again managed to sneak home a narrow 2-1 victory through a well placed free kick by Andreas Cornelius in the 82nd minute, though some would probably also argue that the goalkeeper could have done a better job, but as written before, then SønderjyskE are looking for a new goalkeeper this winter.

FC Nordsjælland were far from able to revenge the injustice they suffered in Champions League against Shakhtar, but played a terrible match and lost 0-1 away to an Esbjerg team that were able to defend well, rely on a few fast breaks and then punish the visitors through a set piece... and to add to their misery, key FCN centre back Jores Okore suffered an injury that will keep him out of the remaining games before the winter break. So this match could become very costly for FCN, while AaB Aalborg on the other hand took home a deserved but narrow 1-0 away win against Randers in a match that besides the nice goal by Helenius mainly will be remembered for the head-butting incident at the end of the match, resulting in a straight red card to the American striker Charlie Davies, who has been far from impressive for Randers so far in the Superliga. I suspect that he has never really managed to fully recover from the severe injuries he suffered in a serious car crash in 2009.

AGF have been terrible struck by injuries, not only have they been missing their top scorer Aron Jóhannsson in the past several games, but also their 2nd pick in attack, just as the key centre backs Petri Pasanen and Atle Roar Håland have been missing. Arthur Sorin is just not the same kind of natural captain in defense and he is not all that great at heading, though he has done well in the past, when he has been paired with Anders Kure who is a great header, but unfortunately Kure is also injured and out the next few month, so the AGF central defense has been badly broken, just as the attack and central midfield, where Martin Jørgensen has been injured more or less all season, while the other classy play maker Casper Sloth was missing in this match against FC Midtjylland due to an injury. Actually the best option in central midfield has been Sloth and Hjalte Nørregaard, but Nørregaard has only recently recovered from an injury and is not fit to play from start, which has left AGF with the talented but much more defensive minded Kasper Povlsen + a young inexperienced talent, so the central midfield has also been broken, which is why AGF have not been looking all too good their last 4 games games. Or more correctly, the entire "spine" of the team was broken in the match against FC Midtjylland, but still they managed a 1-1 result against an FCM team, that did not really impress but still easily were able to create big opportunities against a shaky looking AGF defense, though it took a brilliant long range shot from Mads Albæk for FCM to finally take a deserved lead in the 69th minute, but then AGF were suddenly able to take charge and create some very good opportunities at the end of the match, especially after Hjalte Nørregaard was subbed in and he was not surprisingly the one making the assist when Kasper Povlsen managed to score his very first goal in the Superliga... It does seem like the AGF injury problems now are clearing up. Aron Jóhannsson should be able to play the full 90 minutes against AaB, just as Casper Sloth and Petri Pasanen now also seem fit for fight.

At the bottom of the table Brøndby managed to take their only second home win of the season, this time against Horsens.... and yet again it was thanks to Dennis Rommedahl who also was involved in both goals when Brøndby managed to beat Silkeborg a few weeks ago. however this time he was the one scoring a decisive goal while Makienok was making the assist, before Makienok finished off a terrible playing Horsens side. Also Mike Jensen has been one of few Brøndby players impressing so far this season, but strangely he is not going get his contract extended when it expire this winter. Apparently Brøndby simply cant afford to keep him, considering their financial problems.

The big Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten have btw been taking a look at how much of their turnover the Superliga clubs are spending on wages (players, coaches, management, business administration ) and it seems that 50-60% is the limit, if you are suppose to run a solid healthy business. Here are the figures :

FC Midtjylland (full 12 month of 2011-12) :
Turnover $14.5 million (€11.2 million), of which 90.7% was spend on wages.
    Brøndby (first 9 month of 2012) :
Turnover $18.1 million (€14 million), of which 84.1% was spend on wages.
Esbjerg FB (first 6 month of 2012) :
Turnover $4.2 million (€3.2 million), of which 80.7% was spend on wages.
Randers FC (full 12 month of 2011-12, 1. division) :
Turnover $6.5 million (€5.0 million), of which 76.4% was spend on wages.
AaB Aalborg (first 6 month of 2012) :
Turnover $5.3 million (€4.1 million), of which 73.9% was spend on wages.
AGF Aarhus (full 12 month of 2011-12) :
Turnover $16.8 million (€13 million), of which 61.3% was spend on wages.
FC Nordsjælland (full 12 month of 2011) :
Turnover $10.9 million (€8.4 million), of which 58.2% was spend on wages.
AC Horsens (first 6 month of 2012) :
Turnover $5.3 million (€4.1 million), of which 51.1% was spend on wages.
Silkeborg IF (first 6 month of 2012) :
Turnover $6 million (€5.8 million), of which 45.9% was spend on wages.

Of the clubs mentioned above, FC Nordsjælland and AC Horsens have both made a profit, while Silkeborg so far have produced a small $210k (€160k deficit) in the first 6 month of 2012. As for the rest of the clubs, then it is no surprise that Brøndby and FC Midtjylland have produced by far the biggest deficits and are on the brink of bankruptcy.

It has not been possible to get a recent account from SønderjyskE, while the FCK and OB Odense accounts also include several other businesses, which makes it impossible to make an actual comparison, but FCK (or more correctly, Parken Sport & Entertainment) only spend 32.6% of their $154 milllion (€119 million) turnover on wages and have made a $9.3 million (€7.1 million) profit in the first 9 month of 2012.

Great win for Bröndby. I hope they ride it through and manages to stay. I like their supportership at that club. Can they catch Sönderjyske? Hopefully.

But Aarhus will need to get those first choices back in the line-up soon. Good for the youngsters to get a chance to play, but experiance is needed too off coarse. A Europa League placing is obviously the target for them. Obviously having their goal-scoring leader Johannsson is vital too. Maybe Aalborg can get there too. Aab are slowly building up a decent number of points in order to reach Europe. Kusk and Halenius are producing goals. Nice to see. Important to have goal-scorers off coarse. Something my IFK didn´t have this season.

It seems we´re getting those lower attendances in now as it gets colder!? I´m used to seing Bröndby having a larger attendance. Are they generally just fed up concerning bad sportive results and/or are we seing some kind of boycott towards the leadership too....?

Thanks for your reporting. I love reading your analysis of the games and also whatching those highlights. My favourite league together with Allsvenskan. :)

In general noone likes to see their team get hammered week after week, but considering that the Brøndby supporters always have branded themselves "Best fans in Denmark" and carried banners reading "in good times and bad times", I can't help but notice that they too are just as human as the rest of us and their self-promoting chants now seems quite a bit hollow. I think it's much more to do with the poor results than any kind of protest - that has been tried before and their support-fractions have always been very vocal about such measures in the media.

Btw. everything was back to normal or what must be considered to be "normal" for Brøndby for the past 18 months: They lost tonight 3-0 away to FC Nordsjælland....

Ceres will no doubt present us with much more detailed information about this round, but it's worth mentioning that Silkeborg got away from Herning with a 3-1 away win over FCM, who are sliding deeper and deeper into the pit of quicksand at the bottom of the league. SønderjyskE got a win over the most impotent team at the moment (Horsens) and now the bottom 5 are separated only by 4 points.

Brøndby very much depend 3-4 key players being at their best in every game, and they really can afford injuries and match bans at all... as for AGF, then it is the usual problem :( ... they get off to a slow start, then look like a real top team, but suddenly get badly struck by injuries.... and it always seem to be the key centre backs, central midfielders and strikers who suddenly all get injured more or less at the same time... we have seen this pattern year after year... I don't really know what is wrong, but I suspect that it has something to do with their terrible old training ground that more or less become a "swamp" covered with water this time of year, which I guess is the main reason for most of these injuries ... AGF are now going to renovate the training ground, just as they have also recently received a donation of $1 million from a private fund, that is to be used on renovating the very old clubhouse (they are going to need around $2.5 million in all, from private funds, to finish the job ).

As for AaB, then they also very much depend on staying clear of injuries, and that they don't lose their young key players in the winter break... it could seem that Ajax have become highly interested in Helenius, they seem to be considering to sign either him or the Austrian Bundesliga top scorer Philipp Hosiner ...

There's bound to be quite a lot of drama next weekend. Of course the drop does not happen now, there's still 13 matches left in the spring but there's a lot of psychology connected with being stranded among the bottom two or getting off the hook before winter break. Here's the standing among the bottom 5 as it looks after round 19:

    M W-D-L Goals pts
    8. SønderjyskE 19 6-2-11 19-27 20
    9. Esbjerg 19 4-7- 8 17-22 19
    10. FCM 19 4-7- 8 25-32 19
    11. Silkeborg 19 5-2-12 19-39 17
    12. Brøndby 19 3-7- 9 19-30 16

Danish TIPSBLADET has listed a number of "best/worst scenarios" for the bottom two:
    http://www.tipsbladet.dk/nyhed/superliga/bif-og-sif-soed-droem-eller-mareridt

The matches involving the bottom 5:
    Sønderjyske - Brøndby
    Randers FC - EfB
    AC Horsens - FC Midtjylland
    AGF - Silkeborg IF

For the bottom two the by far worst case scenario is that they lose their respective matches AND Esbjerg and FCM wins their somewhat tricky away matches, that will leave Silkeborg and Brøndby with a gap of 5 & 6 points to salvation. While it doesn't seem as much on paper given that a win is worth 3 points, one should remember that there's only 13 rounds left in spring and both teams would need at least two wins just to make contact, which means that every shot in the gun will have to count.

The official 'Superliga player of the month' award, November 2012
Brøndby target man Simon Makienok has officially been selected as Superliga 'Player of the month' ... OB Odense winger/striker Rasmus Falk came in second, while his team-mate Krisztián Vadócz came in 3rd :
    http://www.superliga.dk/superligaen/maanedens-spiller.html

The 12 Danish Superliga head coaches have been asked to pick their top-5 Superliga players of this ½-season, though not being able to vote for their own players... the result you can see below... of the 16 players who received votes, only 4 were defenders .... Danish NT right back Lars Jacobsen, USA right back Michael Parkhurst and centre backs Jores Okore and Kris Stadsgaard.

... it's perhaps worth noticing, that it was the AGF head coach who cast all 3 votes on Parkhurst, as his 3rd best player... interesting because Parkhursts contract is about to expire and AGF are in the market looking for a new right back, which has been the AGF weak spot the past seasons....

    1. Nicolai Jørgensen, FCK 31 votes
    2. Lars Jacobsen, FCK 29
    3. Andreas Cornelius, FCK 25
    4. Nicolai Stokholm, FCN 22
    5. Casper Sloth, AGF 17
    6. Jores Okore, FCN 15
    7. Aron Jóhannsson, AGF 11
    8. Rasmus Falk, OB 10
    9. Joshua John, FCN 6
    10. Kasper Kusk, AaB 4
    11. Michael Parkhurst, FCN 3
    12. Quincy Antipas, Brøndby 2
    12. Kris Stadsgaard, FCK 2
    14. Andreas Johansson, OB 1
    14. Mike Jensen, Brøndby 1
    14. Nicklas Helenius, AaB 1

FC København had some trouble dealing with a Randers team that was dominating at the start of the match and could have taken an early lead, but still Randers soon found themselves 0-1 behind, when a Randers player made a horrible blunder, passing the ball straight to FCK topscorer Cornelius, who did not miss this golden opportunity... and after FCK also managed to score a second goal through a header from a corner kick, they had no real trouble dealing with Randers in the rest of the match.... in the match between FC Nordsjælland and Brøndby, the home team also took an early lead through some terrible defending, but Brøndby still managed to put up a good fight in the first 15 minutes, with Rommedahl and Mike Jensen producing some good attempts on target that were saved by the FCN keeper. However, after FCN took a 2-0 lead early in the second half it was game over for a Brøndby team that seem stuck below the relegation line.

There is not much to say about the match between AaB and AGF in Aalborg that was greatly troubled by heavy snowfall. So it became more about who were better at making use of the poor weather conditions, and it has been a bit of a weakness in the past that AaB really do not have much of a "plan B", so when AGF took an early lead through a terrible back-pass blunder by AaB defender Patrick Kristensen, the match was more or less lost for the home team. AGF simply were much better at adjusting tactically, despite key play-maker Casper Sloth getting injured early in the match. But especially the more physical AGF players Kasper Povlsen and Stephan Petersen looked good just as the Finnish and Icelandic AGF players Petri Pasanen and Aron Jóhannsson seemed to feel very much at home on the snowy pitch, while the AaB coach and players still seem to have something to learn, or more correctly, they need a "plan B", when their usual game plan does not work.

FC Midtjylland lost at home to a highly efficient and cynical playing Silkeborg team that simply have become much more tactically clever playing after Viggo Jensen took charge of the team. Silkeborg now play a narrow diamond 4-4-2 in compare with the more attacking minded 4-3-3 they used to play. Though it also should be said that FCM were badly struck in defense, missing their captain Kristian Bak and key centre back Sviatchenko, not to forget their left back Jesper Juelsgård. Never the less, a terrible home loss for an FCM team that is getting more and more in trouble at the bottom of the league, not to forget that they are so desperate in need of money that they have now sold 70% of the transfer rights, in case of a future sale of Mads Albæk, Sviatchenko and 4 of their younger talents. In return FCM are getting just around €2.7 million or $3.5 million. At around the same time last year, FCM sold the transfer rights for Izunna, Sylvester Igboun and Rilwan Hassan to 'Slyzunna Invest' for a bit less than €1 million or just around $1.2 million. So FCM are obviously not going to be in the market buying reinforcements this winter.

In Odense the home team struck the Esbjerg woodwork in the first half and took a deserved lead after the break, though also a bit to easily from a corner kick to a totally unmarked Andreas Johansson in the box. However, only minutes later OB Odense were lucky to escape a terrible blunder by keeper Jesper Christiansen, who dropped the ball in the box. Fortunately for the home team the Esbjerg goal was correctly ruled offside be the referee. The Odense defense seemed a bit shaken by this incident the following 10 minutes or so, but then Norwegian striker Marcus Pedersen saved the day just as brilliantly assisted by Krisztián Vadócz and from that point on it was only a matter of how big the victory would be. OB Odense are hoping to keep Marcus Pedersen, who is on loan for the rest of this season from Dutch side Vitesse, but with an option to buy.
