Well, nice to see Nielsen getting into the role as the defensive leader. I will for sure try to better follow the developement regarding Aalborg in the league. Looking forward to that. Hallenius have stayed at the club. A high class player that have shown a great deal of respect I guess for the club despite all the financial problems!? A type of player otherwise destined to move abroad during rougher periods. So respect to a guy like him as well.

Yes, this is my new focus. To visit Aalborg. A few fellow veteran Angels will hopefully come too. Would be a great experiance. And tasting some local beer. I will drink also a Ceres in honour of our honorable Aarhus supporter-Ceres...... :)

Thanks for the invitation. Will bring the word to my friends.

    Det er da sgu dejligt!

Unfortunately I have experienced some internet problems of lately, getting cut off rather often, which unfortunately has slowed down my ability to do my usual work, and also made it difficult to post more than a few lines at a time here as well :( ..

One confirmed transfer and a lot of rumours....:

It is a fact that Brøndby sells Michael Krohn-Dehli to newly-promoted spanish la liga Celta Vigo. Immediately this seems like a big loss for the club and could land them even deeper in the anything-but-comfort-zone at the bottom, but they are hot in pursuit of Martin Ørnskov from Silkeborg (semi-confirmed rumor), and an unnamed super-liga club is interested in SønderjyskE's Lasse Vibe (perhaps Brøndby). It would make sense in that light to sell a wage-heavy Krohn-Dehli in order to free up both team-space and finances for either one or both players. Whether or not they would be significant reinforcements for the formerly so proud club, that remains to be seen....

Yesterday I read an article in the local newspaper saying that AaB's striker Nicklas Helenius may have played his second-last match in DK as unnamed dutch and german clubs have landed bids for him. His agent refused immediately to confirm this, but when he was met with a Lynge Jakobsen-quote that bids have been sent - and rejected - the agent admitted that "something might happen in the near future". If indeed anything happens, AaB's away match to OB could and would be Helenius' final for now. While I'm sad to see such an important player leave and realize that it weakens our squad significantly, I'll also admit to two facts:

    1. AaB is cash-strapped and needs the money. Period.
    2. Helenius have shown incredible growth as a talent and if he hasn't already reached his limit at Aalborg - and perhaps Denmark as a whole - then he is getting closer fast. And such a talent deserves to be nurtured and developed further. Double Period.

My Internet problems has delayed my usual transfer report that will have to wait a bit more, but on the other hand, then the most important transfers usually are going to happen in the last week or the last days before the transfer window is closing... AaB have come off to a good start, so perhaps this makes them less reluctant about selling Helenius and probably also make the offers they are getting a bit higher... and they do need the money.

As for Brøndby, then their former director managed to reveal (before he got fired) that they would run out of money to pay wages, if they were not in top-6 after round 11, when the clubs get their first payment of TV-money this season, and if you look at the league table, Brøndby are not likely to end in top-6 only 5 rounds from now, so I'm sure they had no other options than to sell Michael Krohn-Dehli for € 1 million, of which they actually only get to keep 50%, since the rest goes to his form club Ajax, but if Brøndby really are in desperate need of money, then even as little as €500k + saved wages, could make all the difference. At least until the winter break.

If you on the other hand look at AGF Aarhus and FC Midtjylland, that have come off to poor start, in compare with what they had expected, then you will see that FCM suddenly found the £280k transfer fee + wages they otherwise didn't seem to be able to afford, so they could sign Morten "Duncan" Rasmussen , while the AGF director of sport made the fairly late signing of Petri Pasanen and now also suddenly is having the Dutch right back Michael Timisela on trial and is talking about having the money to make a few more reinforcements before the transfer window is closing, so of course the clubs are very much looking at how this season has started and are trying to figure out, if now is the best time to sell or buy, just before the window is closed.

Unlike most other Danish Superliga clubs, that very much have to answer to the demands from their banks these days, before they start shopping, then AGF Aarhus is a different case, because they have never had any actual debt to any bank, despite often producing some big deficits. The reason for this is, that there are some very rich investors/shareholders (including Dan Cake owner Erling Eskildsen and the grandson of Grundfos founder Poul Due Jensen) secretly taking the bill and paying up, when AGF have spend too much money, so AGF do have the freedom to go shopping, though they are no all too keen on spending too much money, because the present management are keen on being able to show a balanced budget for a change.

    OB-AaB 0-4 (0-1)
    0-1 Nicklas Helenius (2)
    0-2 Thomas Augustinussen (42)
    0-3 Henrik Dalsgaard (43)
    0-4 Lucas Andersen (63)
    Red card: Daniel Høgh (1)

WOW! Didn't see that one coming... But then again, neither did those who were knock-outed by such boxing legends like Mike Tyson, Muhammad Ali or George Foreman.

The first and most serious knock-out was supplied by Odense themselves after exactly 58 seconds(!!) A precise and razor-sharp pass had sent Matthias Wichmann clean through the OB defense with Daniel Høgh running behind him into the penalty area. As Wichmann lined up for the most perfect shooting opportunity, Høgh found no other alternative than to put his hands on Wichmann's shoulders and push the young AaB-midfielder down. This left also the match referee Michael Johansen with no other than the obvious call: He pointed towards the penalty spot and pulled out the red card from his back-pocket. I checked the watch on the tv in the very moment Høgh pulled Wichmann down - 58 seconds played. I bet this will stand as the fastest sending-off for the remainder of the season.

One thing, however, is being granted a penalty - a completely different story it is to convert it, and even Lionel Messi is known to miss sometimes. But if anyone in the young AaB-squad is brimming with confidence, it's Helenius and he slotted the ball past the keeper without hesitation.

Being one man down and with 89 minutes to go, that must be just about the worst scenario for any football team anywhere in the world, but to be fair OB had quite a number of opportunities to score an equalizer that might have changed the course of the match. One of the biggest came after only 11 minutes when Morten Skoubo slid into a cross from nearly point blank range, but a quick reaction from Nikolaj Larsen prevented the goal and resulted in a corner.

Though AaB naturally was in possesion most of the time and had a few chances, it still looked likely that OB would get a goal, especially in a 10 minute long period from around 30. minute. But just as the home team had gained momentum, the young guns struck back: Corner with 3 minutes to play - the cross was too long and the chance seemed lost, when it was picked up near the byline at the other side, crossed back where Kasper Kusk met the ball at the far post. He's only still a young player, but his decisions are that of a +200 games veteran. Instead of firing away from close range, Kusk lifted the ball softly into the goal-box where Thomas Augustinussen bravely connected to scrape the ball across the goalline with a header from 2-3 meters distance.

Things went from bad to disastrous for OB almost immediately. They kicked off, lost the ball and Henrik Dalsgaard ran clean through on the right side. His first attempt was blocked by the OB-keeper, but Toppel collided with his own defender and Dalsgaard took full advantage of the opportunity.

Not much is to be told from the 2nd half. Collecting two goals in such quick succession had deprived OB of all hope that they could make any comeback of sorts, and the final nail was put in the coffin just after the hour. Young Lucas Andersen faked a shot and instead took the ball with him in a dribble that at the moment reminded me of Michael Laudrups famous goal vs. Uruguay back in 1986 at the World Cup in Mexico.

What strikes me with our young team here in Aalborg is the way coach Kent Nielsen suddenly have managed to introduce the team to a quite new and different tactical approach. For many years AaB have been known primarily as a strong counter-attacking team with a solid, defensive fundament. The solid defense is still there by all accounts, but instead of waiting for the opponents to come, the tactic is now to pressure and stress the ball-carrier no matter where on the pitch he is by limiting the space, and when in possesion the focus is on passing in small combinations and then try hitting killer-balls.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I'm not going to run around town with arms in the air and dream about a championship-challenge, the team is still very young and the squad is small - but brimming with quality! I'll allow myself to hope for a top-6 finish and a good cup-run, but much depends on whether we can keep f.x. Nicklas Helenius. But right now I'm looking at the table and enjoy the view from almost the very top.

Round 7 became very entertaining with lots of goals... and we even got the fastest hat-trick ever scored in the Danish Superliga by the young Icelandic striker Aron Jóhannsson, who broke a record set by Ebbe Sand in a match between Brøndby and Vejle BK in November 1997 ... back then it took Ebbe Sand 4.02 minutes to score his 3 goals, while Aron "Footloose" Jóhannsson managed to do the job for AGF Aarhus in 3.50 minutes against Horsens :

... and the nickname "footloose" you may ask ? ... here is the answer :D :

The Superliga may have lost some of the more expensive foreign players this season due to the financial crisis, but this season has so far clearly been dominated by a new generation of young highly talented players... of course the young AaB Star players Helenius, Kusk and Lucas Andersen, but we are also seeing the same pattern in other Danish Superliga clubs...

FCN and FCM have always used lots of younger players, but Odense have let their older expensive foreigners go and are now leaving it up to players like Rasmus Falk, Emil Larsen, Bashkim Kadrii, but also some younger foreign talents to shine.

AGF Aarhus have a highly talented Casper Sloth and Kasper Povlsen (who unfortunately is injured at the moment) in central midfield and the young Icelandic striker Aron Jóhannsson ... we see a talented young Mads Fenger and Ronnie Schwartz in Randers ...Troels Kløve and the young keeper Rønnow in Horsens ... a Jakob Ankersen and Peter Ankersen in Esbjerg ... a Lasse Vibe in SønderjyskE and so I could go on... not to forget the younger foreigners in their early 20's like Joshua John, Marvin Pourie , Ken Fagerberg, Bryan Oviedo and Conor O'Brien.

Even rich FC København that used to throw almost all their money at expensive foreigners, are now deliberately signing young Danish players like a Nicolai Jørgensen and introducing some highly talented youngsters from their 'F.C. Copenhagen School of Excellence' like Andreas Cornelius and Christoffer Remmer who have both impressed this season.

The Danish transfer window is still open for a few more days, so my final extensive transfer report will have to wait a bit longer, but FCK have sold their highly talented Costa Rican left back Bryan Oviedo to Everton FC for a £2.5m (or €3.1 m) fee... Oviedo only had 10 month left of his contract... Now FCK are looking for a "last minute" replacement it seems, and have already made a €1 million offer on FC Midtjyllands Jesper Juelsgård, which has been rejected.

Also AaB Aalborg chose to sell one of their young successful players... the only 17-yo wingerLucas Andersen has been sold to Dutch Eredivisie side Ajax for a €1,3 million fee.... So now Ajax have no less than 6 Danish players in their squad, Christian Eriksen, Christian Poulsen, Lasse Schöne, Nicolai Boilesen, Viktor Fischer and Lucas Andersen ...

OB Odense have sold their 24-yo holding midfielder Kalilou Traoré to French side Sochaux. The transfer fee is said to be €2 million.... a bit surprising since he clearly had the quality and potential to replace Eric Djemba-Djemba in central midfield....

Lucas was sold for 1.5 million + a yet undisclosed fee after X amount of games for ajax, plus 15% of next sale. Seems fair for a big talent from Denmark on todays transfer market, I for one think Ajax can develop him into a quality player, so the next sale % is important. Lucas' contract ran until 31 dec 2013, so i'm not sure he and especially his agent would advice Lucas to renew, and we would get peanuts for him. But most likely that had already been discussed.

Since the transfer window is now finally closed and we are having a small NT break in the Superliga this week, I'm over the next few days going to have a closer look at the transfers made this summer... and it btw became rather hectic Monday and early Tuesday, with plenty of transfers. In fact, I have been a bit surprised at how many transfers and fairly interesting signings we have seen, considering that some of the clubs are still badly struck by the financial crisis.

FC København btw chose to buy Rúrik Gíslason, who had just "punished" his new employer FCK, by scoring the important 2-2 goal for Odense, as you can see in the highlights below... and a great match it was, surely one of the very best Superliga games for a very long time, with some very nice football from both teams, lots of great opportunities and attempt and surely also the 'goal of the week' by young Nicolai Jørgensen, who really has impressed so far this season. So no doubt FCK are going to use their 'option to buy' clause, and it is nice to see, that FCK finally are putting their trust in some good young Danish players and homegrown talent, rather that just throwing money at some experienced foreign "names". You could say the exact same about their opponent OB Odense, who are now playing some much nicer football in compare with the past many seasons. Young players like Emil Larsen and Rasmus Falk are really making this Odense team shine, so the 2-2 result was quite deserved.

AGF Aarhus took their second away win in a row, once again scoring 4 goals, so it could seem that AGF is finally back on track after a poor start, which btw is also how it was last season, where AGF also got off to a poor start, but turned it around in round 7 by beating Horsens 3-0 away... this time they beat Horsens by 4-1 and then went on to beat Silkeborg by 4-0 in round 8, and again it was young Casper Sloth dominating in midfield and being the real Star, while young Aron Jóhannsson keep scoring goals, well assisted by Sloth and Eckersley. AaB Aalborg took home their 3 away win in a row, scoring 4 goals a game, which is a record. But as you can see by the fairly large number of goals that is being scored, the defending could be better this season, while the entertainment value has grown, which probably is the price the clubs are going to pay, when they are fielding more young players than usual. but it is especially refreshing to see, that it is some of the very young players who are really stealing the spotlight and impressing at the moment... and just like the goal by young Nicolai Jørgensen against Odense, the goal by young Kasper Kusk is surely also worth watching.

20-yo attacking midfielder, Alexander Green (contract expired --> ?)

It would take a lot of time to explain what is wrong with Brøndby at the moment, because it's not really the players on the pitch, or the coach, or the director of sport that is the main problem, but mainly the whole club that is in a huge managerial and financial crisis. Of course it is a huge problem when the club has not been able to find a new main sponsor the past few year and now need to borrow €1.4 million from one of the members of the board, just to be able to pay wages, but the problems go deeper than this. Brøndby is a big club in Denmark with a great youth department, so they should easily be able to find new sponsors and investors, but some unbelievably poor management has scared all sponsors and investors away, so that the club now is pleading for help among the fans, who are also reluctant and angry at especially the one-man dictator Per Bjerregaard, who has finally stepped down as chairman, but who they still fear is pulling the strings from his seat as chairman of the Amateur department of the club, who in reality is in charge of the professional department and their board, which is a major problem that keeps new investors away.

But problems are there to be solved. unfortunately the Brøndby management have trouble finding their feet. One minute they want to buy their way out of the crisis and believe they can finish in top-6, if they add a few big "name" players, while the next moment they are talking about doing a "Borussia Dortmund", starting more or less from scratch, relying on their own youth, also knowing they have always been good at producing highly talented young players. But as you also can see by looking at their youth/reserve team transfers, their poor management and the bad results now also makes it difficult for them to hold on to their most talented young players. The two U17 NT players Andreas Christensen and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg who have now moved to Chelsea and Bayern München, simply did not want to extend their contracts, because they no longer believed that staying at Brøndby would be good for them in the long run. The same was the case with Patrick Olsen who told the Brøndby management, that either they sold him right now to Inter Milan, or he would simply walk away and join another Danish club for free, by playing as an amateur, which they could not prevent. So they felt forced to sell. Losing this kind of talent at an early age to much bigger clubs, is of course going to become a major problem for Brøndby in the long run. So this has also become one of the major problems they need to address. Still, They did get some compensation and development fees, which they no doubt were badly in need of.

As for the transfers this summer, they were linked to the likes of Thomas Kahlenberg, but in reality they were in need of cutting at least 10% of the wage budget, which they have done by letting some of the older and more expensive players go, and by selling their key creative player Michael Krohn-Dehli to Celta Vigo, who in reality has been replaced by Quincy Antipas from SønderjyskE. Though this is an expensive buy for a club in financial crisis, this was probably a smart move, considering that one of their main rivals in the league this season, easily could be SønderjyskE. So making them weaker by signing one of their absolute key players, could benefit Brøndby in a relegation battle, because realistically this young Brøndby team is going to focus on staying clear of relegation. Martin Albrechtsen has been picked up to add some experience to their defense, but he has been much troubled by injuries the past years, which is also why FC Midtjylland let him go.

OB Odense : (finished 10 last season, but are now in 4th place)

    IN:
21-yo winger/striker, Emil Larsen, Den U21 NT (LyngbyBK, 4-year contract, estimated fee €500k)
31-yo right back/utility midfielder, Michael Silberbauer, Den 24 caps, 1 goal (On loan from Young Boys for the rest of this season, with an option to buy)
27-yo central midfielder, Krisztián Vadócz, Hungary 40 caps, 2 goals (NEC Nijmegen, free)
21-yo defender/defensive midfielder, Mohammed Diarra, France (FC Paris Saint-Germain, 4-year contract, free)
    22-yo winger/striker, Cédric N’Koum, France/Cameroon (Dunkerque, 4-year contract, free)
22-yo striker, Marcus Pedersen, Norway (On loan from Vitesse for the rest of this season, with an option to buy)
19-yo centre back, Kasper Larsen, Den U19 NT (own youth)
19-yo goalkeeper, Nicolai Jørgensen (Brøndby IF, 1-year contract, free)
19-yo striker, Hannes Anier, Estonia U21 NT (FC Flora Tallinn, 3-year contract, free)

45-yo head coach, Troels Bech (Silkeborg, 3-year contract, fee €500k)

    OUT:
24-yo holding midfielder, Kalilou Traoré, Mali 3 caps (Sold --> Sochaux, fee €2m)
24-yo right winger/striker, Rúrik Gíslason, Iceland 13 caps, 1 goal (Sold --> FC København, estimated fee €750k)
31-yo holding midfielder, Eric Djemba-Djemba, Cameroon 24 caps, 2 goals (contract expired --> Hapoel Tel Aviv)
30-yo right back/midfielder, Bernard Mendy, France, 4 caps (contract expired --> Stade Brest)
26-yo centre back/midfielder, Tore Reginiussen, Norway, 12 caps, 2 goal (Sold --> Rosenborg, fee €400k)
33-yo goalkeeper, Stefan Wessels, Germany (contract expired --> )
21-yo goalkeeper, Daniel Krog (contract expired --> )
20-yo centre back, Oliver Larsen (contract expired --> Hobro IK)

58-yo manager, Poul Hansen (reitred --> continue his job as Director of Football)

OB Odense finished 2nd in the Superliga three years in a row from 2008-09 to 2010-11, but last year was an absolute disaster for the club. Perhaps the many older players had trouble keeping up the spirit now that they were nowhere near fighting for medals, and perhaps no all of them fit the less physical and more attacking minded style of play that OB Odense were trying to implement. But surely some major changes were going happen this summer, with the brilliant tactician Troels Bech taking over as head coach, while Poul Hansen would be able to do a better job finding the right players for a more Spanish-inspired attacking minded style of play.

Last season it was especially the defense and defensive midfield that failed, so you would expect OB Odense to get rid of some defenders and midfielders and sign reinforcements for that department. But it was a bit of a surprise that they let Djemba-Djemba go and then also sold his supposed replacement Kalilou Traoré, so good replacements had to be found, which happened very late in the transfer window and even after the window had closed.

The young winger Emil Larsen has already proven to be an instant success, and so have some of the young Odense players, especially young Rasmus Falk who is now really starting to shine. OB Odense also expect much of Krisztián Vadócz who they had been hoping to get for quite some time, also because he has experience from Osasuna in the Spanish league, so that he knows the style of play, while Michael Silberbauer is going to be the more all-round utility midfielder/full back, just as he has been for the Danish NT.... Odense are perhaps also looking to sign the 30-yo German defensive midfielder Michael Fink, though a deal has not been signed as of yet, but he is a free agent after he left Turkish side Samsunspor earlier this year.

The young Norwegian striker Marcus Pedersen also seem to be a good reinforcement, though it will probably take some time for him and the two young French midfielders to adjust and find thier way to the starting 11. But so far so good for an Odense team that has done surprisingly well in the first 8 rounds this season, though head coach Troels Bech is regarded to be probably the best tactician in the Danish league. So he is probably the biggest scoop Odense have made in this transfer window.

Randers FC: (Newly promoted, but are 5th placed this season)

    IN:
27-yo right winger, Jonas Borring, Den 6 caps, 1 goal (FC Midtjylland, 2-year contract, free)
26-yo striker, Charlie Davies, USA 17 caps, 4 goals (FC Sochaux, 2-year contract, free)
28-yo striker, Pierre Boya, Cameroon 4 caps, 1 goal (SC Austria Lustenau, 2-year contract, free)
27-yo left back, Adama Tamboura, Mali 56 caps (FC Metz, 3-year contract, fee ?)
17-yo centre back, Jacob Dehn Andersen, Den U17 NT (own youth)
63-yo Head coach, Colin Todd, England, 27 caps (Birmingham City, Scout, free)

    OUT:
27-yo attacking midfielder/striker, Kasper Lorentzen, Den 3 caps, 1 goal (sold --> FC Nordsjælland, fee ?)
33-yo right back, Søren Pedersen (Retired)
26-yo left back, Sebastjan Komel, Slovenia (free transfer --> Royal Antwerp )
20-yo left back/winger, Mikkel Cramer (On loan for the rest of 2012 to --> Akademisk Boldklub )
44-yo Head coach, Michael Hemmingsen (fired --> ?)
    ----
Randers didnt do all too well in the Danish 1. Division last season, but but only barely managed to win promotion and fired their head coach Michael Hemmingsen only 10 days before league start, replacing him with Colin Todd who did not have the needed licence to be a Superliga head coach for more than 60 days... So it seemed like a terribe start to a season. But Colin Todd knew the club and has done a solid job for them before and they soon got problems solved regarding his missing licence, so that he is now able to stay on as head coach... and is has been a success. The transfer Randers have made also seem fairly solid, though I guess Charlie Davies is a bit of a gamble. But as newly promoted, the club of course had money to reinforce the team.
    ----

Esbjerg: (newly promoted, and rock bottom so far this season)

    IN:
24-yo holding midfielder, Magnus Lekven, Norway 3 caps (Odd Grenland, 2½-year contract, fee €130k)
28-yo midfielder, Martin Bergvold (FC København, 1-year contract, fee ?)
32-yo box-to-box midfielder/right back, Jerry Lucena, Philippines 6 caps (AGF Aarhus, free)
24-yo central midfielder, Davidson Drobo-Ampem, Germany (FC St. Pauli, 2-year contract, fee ?)
21-yo full back, Peter Ankersen (Rosenborg BK, 4-year contract, fee ?)
30-yo striker, Kenneth Fabricius (on loan from SønderjyskE for the rest of this season)
19-yo winger/striker, Youssef Toutouh (on loan from FC København for the rest of 2012)
22-yo winger, Sebastian Andersen (returned from loan at AC Horsens)
64-yo Director of sport, Viggo Jensen, Den 8 caps (assistant coach at OB Odense, free)

    OUT:
25-yo attacking midfielder, Søren Rieks, Den 3 caps, 1 goal (sold --> NEC Nijmegen, fee €250k)
25-yo holding midfielder, Mikkel Vendelbo (sold --> Hønefoss BK, fee ?)
32-yo centre back, Thomas Gaardsøe, Den 2 caps (free transfer --> ?)
19-yo striker, Mikkel Agger (On loan for the rest of 2012 --> FC Hjørring)
    33-yo defender/midfielder, Morten Karlsen (contract expired --> ?)
30-yo midfielder, Tam Nsaliwa, Canada 13 caps (contract expired --> ?)

Esbjerg have come of to a poor start and also lost their key attacking player Søren Rieks to NEC Nijmegen, but they have been able to sign some interesting reinforcements like the talented Norwegian midfielder Magnus Lekven who is to replace Mikkel Vendelbo, and another interesting signing is full back Peter Ankersen. Also Martin Bergvold is a good reinforcement, if he can stay clear of injuries, which has been a problem in the past. But the question is not so much the quality of their midfielders, but more if they have good enough strikers and defenders/goalkeeper to stay in the Superliga.

Superliga summer transfers 2012, part two :

AGF Aarhus: (finished 5 last season, but are now in 6th place)

    IN:
23-yo striker, Mate Vatsadze, Georgia 5 caps (Dila Gori, 3½-year contract, fee €400k)
31-yo centre/right back, Petri Pasanen, Finland 70 caps, 1 goal (Red Bull Salzburg, 2-year contract, free)
19-yo right back, Frans Dhia Putros (own youth, 1-year contract)

    OUT:
26-yo centre back, Mark Howard, England (free transfer --> ? )
32-yo box-to-box midfielder/right back, Jerry Lucena, Philippines 6 caps (free transfer --> Esbjerg fB )
22-yo striker, Sanel Kapidzic (returned from loan at FC Fredericia--> free transfer --> FC Fyn)

    youth/reserve team :
    IN:
16-yo attacking midfielder, Aleksander Dahl (Lørenskog IF)

AGF Aarhus were mainly supposed to be interested in signing a new right back this summer, but the players they had on trial, Swedish Matias Concha, Polish Marcin Kikut and Dutch Michael Timisela, did not quite seem to impress the AGF head coach, not that it was bad players, but he just had higher expectations, if he was to agree to AGF getting a new right back. So he chose to stick with what he already got in right back position and instead AGF chose to sign the experienced Finland international Petri Pasanen as a new "captain" in central defense, no doubt because Atle Roar Håland is not getting any younger and the defense had been struck by injuries this summer, which also was why Mark Howard was granted a free transfer on his own request. He had simply suffered too many long-term injuries the past years and was in need of a new start at another club.

Due to a lot of minor injuries, AGF suddenly also was on the market to find a new striker... AGF already had 6 strikers in the squad, including Morten Moldskred who the coach for some strange reason just doesn't seem to want to use, or even give a proper chance to show his worth in the Superliga, but with 6 strikers on the books, AGF were mainly hoping for a loan deal and had an agreement lined up with Mainz 05 to sign Anthony Ujah, but the deal fell through in the last minute, when Ujah made up his mind that he would rather stay in Germany. However, at the same time AGF had been negotiating with Georgian side Dila Gori, to buy their key striker Mate Vatsadze, who AGF had discovered in the Europa League 2nd qualifying round, where he had greatly impressed by scoring three goals for Dila Gori against AGF and then later also went on to score twice in the 3rd qualifying round away leg in Cyprus against Anorthosis... in the end Dila Gori agreed to let him go for only €400,000, perhaps because they got him for free from Russian side Volga Nizhniy Novgorod in the winter transfer window, so they were able to make a fairly quick profit on him... He seem like an excellent buy, also considering his age, but you could easily question if AGF now have too many strikers. But AGF probably expect to sell their young Icelandic Superliga topscorer Aron Jóhannsson in the winter. According to Dutch voetbalzone.nl, Aron Jóhannsson had already attracted interest from Borussia Mönchengladbach and Ajax, before he scored his now famous Superliga hat-trick and became Superliga topscorer, but at that point in time Ajax chose to pick up Dutch Danny Hoesen instead.

Financially AGF had room in the wage budget to sign one more fairly expensive player, but they chose to wait and see, hoping for something better at a later point in time, rather than signing one of the right backs they had on trial. So the money is there for a free agent, if he meet their high expectations. otherwise they will keep the money for the next transfer window.

SønderjyskE: (finished 6 last season, but are now in 9th place)

    IN:
26-yo left winger/striker, Johan Absalonsen, Den 2 caps, 1 goal (FC København, 2½-year contract, fee €34k)
22-yo left/right back, Florian Hart, Austria (LASK Linz, 2-year contract, SønderjyskE, free)
24-yo central midfielder, Adigun Salami, Nigeria (FC Midtjylland, 3-year contract, free)
30-yo goalkeeper, Håkon Opdal, Norway, 12 caps (SK Brann, 1-year contract, free)
31-yo defender/midfielder/striker, Niels Lodberg (AC Horsens, 2½-year contract, free)
22-yo striker, Kenan Hajdarevic, Bosnia (AC Horsens, 2½-year contract, contract, fee ?)

    OUT:
28-yo striker, Quincy Antipas, Zimbabwe 7 caps (Sold --> Brøndby IF, fee €670k)
33-yo right back, Jarl-André Storbæk, Norway 17 caps (Sold --> Strømsgodset IF, fee ?)
29-yo centre back, Anders Østli, Norway (contract expired --> Lillestrøm)
28-yo goalkeeper, Nathan Coe, Australia, 3 caps (contract expired --> ?)
30-yo striker, Kenneth Fabricius (on loan to Esbjerg fB for the rest of this season)
29-yo centre back, Michael Larsen Christensen (contract expired --> FC Vestsjælland )
22-yo attacking midfielder/striker, Mads Jessen, Den U21 NT (contract expired --> FC Hjørring)
22-yo striker, Anders Hostrup (free transfer --> Skive IK)
21-yo goalkeeper, Arnar Darri Pétursson, Iceland (free transfer --> Stjarnan FC)

SønderjyskE have signed a few interesting players, doing it cheaply as usual, but on the other hand they have also lost their two solid Norwegian defenders and sold their key creative player Quincy Antipas... a highly strange move, to sell the player who have made and otherwise small solid defensive minded team much more interesting to watch and has been able to add some real quality to their attack, but now he is gone, sold for only €670,000 to one of their supposed main rivals in a relegation battle. Not a very clever move if you ask me. But I guess that they think the signing of Johan Absalonsen and Adigun Salami will make up for their loss. There were apparently several big Austrian clubs interested in signing the young full back Florian Hart, so this may be a scoop for a small club like SønderjyskE, to be able to pick him up.

Financially SønderjyskE are in fairly good shape, but they of course also got a very small wage budget in the first place.

AaB Aalborg: (finished 7 last season, but are now in 2nd place)

    IN:
21-yo centre back, Rasmus Thelander (Akademisk Boldklub, 2-year contract, free)
20-yo central midfielder/winger, Hallur Hansson Faroe Islands U21 NT (On loan for the rest of 2012 from HB Tórshavn, with an option to buy)

    OUT:
    17-yo winger, Lucas Andersen, Den U19 NT (Sold --> Ajax, fee €1m up to €1.5m + a 15% sell-on clause)
23-yo centre/left back, Pól Jóhannus Justinussen, Faroe Islands 5 caps (Valur Football Club, free)
29-yo winger/forward, Chris Rolfe, USA, 10 caps (free transfer --> Chicago Fire)

    Youth/reserve team:
    OUT:
17-yo left back/winger, Jacob Barrett Laursen, Den U18 NT (Juventus, fee ?)

AaB Aalborg are not quite out of the woods financially, despite now having cut 50% of their wage budget over the past 2 years, so there is not much to write about regarding transfers, except of course the sale of young Lucas Andersen to Ajax and Jacob Barrett Laursen to Juventus. But AaB Aalborg have been in luck that they have a down to earth solid head coach and young players like Helenius, Kasper Kusk and an even younger Lucas Andersen really have made their mark when the club had no money to spend on real reinforcements... or perhaps luck is a wrong word to use, because I have noticed that the Danish Superliga clubs of lately have been doing much better at producing young talents who are able to make an almost instant impact in the Superliga, not only as regular starters, but also showing some real Star quality at an early age, which I believe has something to do with the 'Integrated Talent Development' project, better known as 'ITU' (or 'ITD' in English), that was established by the Danish FA as a pilot project around 12 years ago and has been further developed over the years. I think this project has now finally been paying off big time, the past few years.

The ITD/ITU program is for players between 16 and 21 and has been carried out by some specially selected ITD/ITU coaches in selected clubs around the country, mainly Superliga clubs, with the purpose to develop the best youth players in order to prepare them better for playing at the highest club level and for the U21 NT, through goal-oriented individual plans for each player, with the ITD/ITU coach improving the skills of each player by individual training specifically suited for the strengths and weaknesses of each player. The progress is then constantly evaluated and the program is changed for each player when needed, to secure that the player(s) always keep developing in the right direction. Since there of course is a financial limit of how many young players the Danish FA are able to help, the youth NT coaches pick the players according to a list made by the different ITD coaches.

If you ask in Scotland, which has the same size population as Denmark, they will probably tell you that the transformation from football being a sport to being more and more a professional business, is what now has crippled the league and brought Scottish football to it's knees, now that the financial crisis has struck and made much of the money go elsewhere. For a small country with a fairly small league it is highly important to find the right balance between developing own homegrown talent and buying more and better foreign players, when you get more and more TV money to spend. Because the easy way is to buy too many foreign players, who then keep your own young players from developing. I think the Danish FA at a very early stage took notice that the clubs were producing less of the real top-talented players, that Denmark had been known for especially in the 70's, 80's, so they had to come up with a new plan that was better suited for a more professional businesslike environment. So they came up with the 'ITU'/'ITD' project that they chose to throw money at, which also was forcing the top clubs to do a much better job regarding their most talented players.... and now we finally see that the money was well spend... a good "measuring stick" of the general quality of young Danish talent, is also looking at how many Danish players Ajax Amsterdam keep picking up, because they have always liked to pick up good young Danish players, when they see a good opportunity to do so.

AaB Aalborg have had an excellent start to the season and by being able to hold on to especially Helenius and Kasper Kusk, then I predict that they surely will do better in the league in compare with last season. Of course my prediction could be ruined if they run into further financial trouble or simply chose to sell Helenius and Kusk in the winter break... but so far so good for AaB Aalborg.

Silkeborg: (finished 8 last season, but are now in the relegation zone, in 11th place)

    IN:
22-yo attacking midfielder, Adeola Runsewe, Nigeria (HB Køge, 4-year contract, fee ?)
24-yo Holding midfielder, Bjarni Viðarsson, Iceland 1 cap (KV Mechelen, 4-year contract, fee ?)
21-yo holding midfielder/play-maker, Emil La Cour (FC Fyn, 2-year contract, free)
19-yo attacking midfielder/striker, Mathias Barthel (Own youth)
49-yo head coach, Keld Bordinggaard, Den 4 caps (free agent, 3-year contract)

    OUT:
29-yo defensive midfielder, Sebastian Svärd (contract expired --> ?)
34-yo striker, Kaimar Saag, Estonia 37 caps, 3 goals (contract expired --> Vejle Kolding)
    20-yo winger/striker, Sebastien Moneron (contract expired --> ?)
45-yo head coach, Troels Bech (Sold --> OB Odense, fee €500k)

On paper, nothing much has happened in Silkeborg. Gone is the always injured Sebastian Svärd and the aging striker Kaimar Saag, while the club has signed Adeola Runsewe, who as I have written before, is an excellent young creative player, who unfortunately lack some finishing skills, which I'm sure is the only reason why he has not been picked up by a bigger club or a bigger league. Bjarni Viðarsson is probably a solid player, but he will need to adjust to some new team-mates and a new league and style of play.

Financially Silkeborg seem fairly solid, but it is a rather small club, so they don't really have much money to spend and the past years it has mainly been the brilliant tactician Troels Bech who has been responsible for their success. Now he is gone and replaced by the former Danish U21 NT coach Keld Bordinggaard, who clearly is no great tactician and never really managed to get the best out of the Danish U21's. so in my view it is no big surprise that he has not been a success for a small club like Silkeborg.

Thanks Ceres for the up-date of the Superligaen! Professional overview as always buddy! :)

I´m particularly enjoying Aalborgs slightly surprising top placing at the moment. As you wrote, things can change quickly though.

I have to comment on the thing with the ITU/ITD, because I do not feel that all credit must go to a targeted and integrated youth scheme though I agree that it has helped bringing forth a number of young would-be stars. But IMO the talents have always been there - only as Ceres say with the analogy to Scotland, the preferred thing has been to buy reasonably expensive and yet also experienced legionnaires in stead of focussing on developing own youth players. We're seeing the same thing happening in danish handball, especially among the ladies, where almost the entire NT is made up of players who are only understudies at their respective danish clubs, which in turn has brought the handball NT from the very top of the world to a level where they have to fight even to qualify for the big tournaments.

So in my opinion it's only a blessing in disguise that a financial crisis has hit hard on danish football, because now the clubs have to focus on the talent which has been there all the time but have been forced out in favor of swedish, norwegian, north-american and african players. Had AaB i.e. been able to attract a new Rade Prica or Andreas Johansson, neither Kasper Kusk nor Helenius would have been given much more than random chances and would probably have wasted away at smaller clubs in 1st and 2nd division.

As you perhaps have noticed, then Danish clubs are now also exporting U17 and U19 talents to the big leagues in greater numbers, which also has to do with the ITU/ITD project ... of course the players have always been there, but it is the more goal-oriented individual training that is making the difference, so that the players are improving their skills better and faster.... which then also makes them more ready to either move abroad at an earlier age, or actually make an instant impact when they get the opportunity to play Superliga... So it's not only about the financial crisis, because FCK do not need to field a young Andreas Cornelius and Christoffer Remmer to save money. They simply do it because the young players finally are good enough to impress at this level.

In Aalborg I believe it is still Poul Erik Andreasen who is doing an excellent job as ITU coach, so we are talking about real top-qualified managers doing this job, but the ITU/ITD project would hardly be financially possible for the clubs, if the Danish FA was not helping to pay for it.

FCN already had the reinforcements Morten Nordstrand and Kasper Lorentzen in place and signed last winter, while in the case of the former Dutch U21 international Joshua John, FCN discovered him when they were playing a pre-season match against Twente this summer. So they made Twente an offer of a loan deal with an option to buy later at a fixed price, which Twente agreed to. Joshua John was more than eager to make the move, considering that he was likely to become a regular starter for FCN. In the past he was used as a classic winger, sticking to his line as he was told to do, while at FCN he is suppose to participate more in central midfield and also move into the box, so that he is both a kind of winger and striker, which seem to suit him much better. So FCN probably have struck Gold again... Also the signing of the talented young Lyngby play-maker Anders "AC" Christiansen seem to be an excellent signing who is going to fit right in at FCN.

FCN knew they were losing the absolute key centre back Andreas Bjelland, so they were in good time to find a replacement and actually had come to an agreement with Swedish Rasmus Bengtsson who was keen on making the move, but unfortunately the deal fell through in the last minute, when FCN and FC Twente were not able agree on the terms after all. There was also a rumour that they were looking at Michael Jakobsen, but he chose to sign with FC København, so now they are left with a bit of a problem, considering the age of Okore and Ivan Runje, who now are their two best centre backs. At the moment they are having the experienced Norwegian Ragnvald Soma on trial, but I guess that he is a kind of 'shot in the dark' that they just hope could be the right answer to their problem.

    Youth/reserve team:
    OUT:
19-yo left back, Thobias Skovgaard, Den U19 NT (free transfer --> HB Køge)

I have often been puzzled by the transfers FCK have been making the past year, when they were signing players who seemed much too expensive and with little to no experience. Pape Paté Diouf is a good example of this strange and failed strategy, so perhaps it's good that Carsten V. Jensen quit his job as head coach and now is able to focus more on his job as Director of Football, while he also has a strong experienced head coach, who know exactly how he want to develop this FCK team.

The former Anderlecht manager Ariël Jacobs has really impressed from day one at FCK, knowing exactly what to do and where to go with this team. Unlike Ståle Solbakken, Jacobs insist on signing and using more young Danish players. In fact it is clearly a part of his football philosophy, to use more domestic players, rather than just buying experienced foreigners. So this is exactly what he has done, by the signing of the 21-yo winger/striker Nicolai Jørgensen, who has been a huge success, and in my opinion by far the best Superliga signing in this transfer window and also the best FCK signing in many years, and for very little money I may add. Adding the youngster Andreas Cornelius to the squad and giving him the chance to be a regular starter has also been an excellent move by Ariël Jacobs. In a big club like FCK, the manager is usually much more reluctant and cautious when it comes to using a new young player. but it is safe to say, that he has been right about using Cornelius, who really has been brilliant in the Superliga so far.

The young Belgian U21 international Igor Vetokele has also been an instant success, scoring an important goal in his Superliga debut against their main rivals and Danish Champions FC Nordsjælland. So despite the sale of Dame N'Doye and Bryan Oviedo and the loss of Mathias "Zanka" Jørgensen, I'm going to declare FCK the winner of this transfer window, because they have signed the right kind of replacements and an excellent coach, who clearly is making them look better than last season.... and then I have not even mentioned or considered the signings of Michael Jakobsen and Rúrik Gíslason, who could also end up being a success.

FC Midtjylland have been badly struck by the financial crisis and have been forced to cut 33% of their wage budget this summer, which of course is going to hurt, not that there is anything wrong with the players they have signed, because Petter Andersson seem to be a very good signing, just as I'm sure FCM in the long run are going to be happy about signing a notorious goalscorer like Morten "Duncan" Rasmussen, when he gets match fit that is, because for some strange reason he did not get to play much for Celtic, despite scoring goals for them in the few games he got the chance. But the coach just didn't seem to like his attitude. The Argentinian Santiago Villafañe seem like an interesting signing, as a good attacking minded right back, who btw is related to no other than Diego Maradona, who was married to Claudia Villafañe for 20 years and is his uncle.

But as written, FCM have been forced to let many of their more expensive first-team players go this summer, which of course is going to show the moment they get struck by a few injuries, because of their lack of depth. I'm sure FCM will try to argue that players like Jonas Borring, Adigun Salami and Jude Nworuh not really were regular starters and that Martin Albrechtsen often was injured, but they were still very good experienced players and in fact, it has already shown so far in the Superliga, that FCM lose points in the second half of the games, when their opponents simply have more experienced players on the bench, who are able to make a difference in the last 20-30 minutes or so, while FCM no longer have this kind of experienced game-changing players on the bench.
    ---

AC Horsens: (finished 4 last season, but are now in 6th place)

    IN:
23-yo striker, Jude Nworuh, Nigeria (FC Midtjylland, ?-year contract, estimated fee €270k)
27-yo defensive midfielder, Steffen Kielstrup (Vejle Kolding, 3-year contract, free)
27-yo right back, Henrik Smedegaard (FC Fredericia, 5-month contract, free)

    OUT:
26-yo left winger/striker, Johan Absalonsen, Den 2 caps, 1 goal (loan deal expired --> FC København)
31-yo defender/midfielder/striker, Niels Lodberg (contract expired --> SønderjyskE)
22-yo striker, Kenan Hajdarevic, Bosnia (Sold --> SønderjyskE, fee ?)
22-yo winger, Sebastian Andersen (returned from loan --> Esbjerg fB )
21-yo centre back, Hamza Kizil, Turkey (contract expired --> ?)
21-yo centre back, Nikolaj Nielsen (contract expired --> ?)
21-yo left back, Christian Madsen (contract expired --> ?)

Horsens have mainly replaced Niels Lodberg and Johan Absalonsen with Steffen Kielstrup and Jude Nworuh, but quite honestly, it took them way too long to find a new striker and the question is, if Jude Nworuh is the kind of striker they need. Though he is a good player in many ways, the reason FCM got rid of him was that he is not very efficient, and Horsens could really make use of a genuine topscorer, which they have not really managed to find after they sold Gilberto Macena.

Steffen Kielstrup has been a key player for Vejle and I'm sure he is going to fit in very well, but he still have to adapt to the Superliga after playing Danish 1. division.

When round 11 has finished this week, I'll try to make an update, especially since this means that the first payment of TV-money is now up.... But I'll start by writing a few words about Brøndby.

Just a few days before he was fired, the former Brøndby director told the media that they would run out of money to pay wages, if they were not in top-6 after round 11, where they now are sure to be dead last in the league, after their 2-3 away loss to Randers.

Brøndby have so far been forced to borrow around €1.4 million from one of the members of the board, just to be able to pay wages, but their financial problems just keep piling up, because they have now finally lost the battle at court against the Danish Players Association, about a misinterpretation or deliberate "miscalculation" regarding paid vacation and pension to especially their foreign players the past several years... and there is no way to make an appeal, so they now have to pay up a dept that of lately has grown from around $4.2 to almost $ 5 million, and it will just keep growing every day until they start paying.

So far Brøndby have missed the first payment of around €0.5 million after they lost the case at court, but the The Danish Players Association is so far showing patience, and the Danish FA is just sitting on their hands, hoping that Brøndby will be able to pay up. But they will of course no be able to keep doing that, if Brøndby do not find some money very soon....

Brøndby will eventually be declared bankrupt, if they cant borrow more money from their board members, or get some money out of a former board member who has a plan of investing up to €20 million in new shares (though this also depend on several other investors ). But there is a power struggle going on, so the question is if it's going to be a little too late, since it's going to take some time to come to an agreement about the new investors and nothing is really going to happen before the winter break.

    Distribution of TV-money.
As promised, I will take a closer look at the distribution of TV-money. The Superliga signed a new 3-year TV-deal, starting this season, worth just around DKK 1,200 million (around $210 million). The Danish FA gets 20% (for the Danish Cup games and mainly for some specialized talent development programs, of which the Superliga clubs of course also get their share). The Danish 1. Division has changed name to the Betsafe league and has been cut from 16 to 12 clubs, that get to share just around $ 6 million a year. (the old deal was around $4.2 million, shared equally by 16 clubs).

This leaves around DKK 270 million (or $47.2 m ) on average a year to be shared between the 12 Superliga clubs, though of course they get a bit less starting this season and a bit more in the seasons to come, so that it going to seem like the clubs are getting a small raise over the next few years. This season the clubs are to share a bit more than DKK 250 million (around $44 million). In the past the TV-money has been distributed every ½ season, but now that the clubs get to share around $16.5 million more on average a season, the TV-money is to be distributed after every 11 rounds.

Generally speaking, I guess there would be 3 ways of splitting the money. You could chose to go the "communist" way (like in the Danish 1. Division) and simply share it equally between the clubs, or perhaps even reward the poor clubs by giving them a bigger share, or you could chose the more "anarcho-capitalism" approach by simply letting the market (TV ratings) decide who get the money, much like we see in Spain, where Barcelona and Real Madrid take home most of the TV-money....

Then there is the more Scandinavian "socialist" approach, where you to some extend reward the clubs according to how they have done, but the money is still fairly evenly distributed, not to make the gap between the rich and poor too big, which has been the usual approach in the Superliga. This time around, the Superliga clubs now chose to split the money a bit differently, so that all the clubs get a raise, though the clubs at the top of the table get a bigger raise, but there is also going to be a bigger share for the clubs that has the most viewers, based on TV ratings, or more correctly, the clubs that get to be 1st and 2nd pick each week by the TV stations, are getting more money. So because Brøndby are still highly popular and always are 1st or 2nd pick, they get a fairly big share, despite their poor results in the league, though of course their opponents also get a bigger share, because they also get to be 1st or 2nd pick, when they face Brøndby. So the distribution of TV-money has become slightly more complicated, both rewarding the bigger and more popular clubs, but also rewarding the smaller clubs to some extend, not to make the difference all too big.... but here you are, the first around DKK 84 million distributed after the first 11 rounds, based on how the clubs have done in the league table, but also to some extend based on TV ratings :

    1. FC København..... $2.29 million
    2. AaB Aalborg........ $1.68 m
    3. FC Nordsjælland. $1.4 m
    4. AGF Aarhus........ $1.42 m
    5. Randers FC......... $1.19 m
    6. OB Odense......... $1.15 m
    7. SønderjyskE....... $1.03 m
    8. AC Horsens.......... $960k
    9. FC Midtjylland..... $930k
    10. Silkeborg IF....... $800k
    11. Esbjerg fB........... $790k
    12. Brøndby IF..... $1.07 m

As you can see, then Brøndby profit by being popular in the TV ratings, while also AGF get a slightly bigger share than FCN, for the same reason..
