    overhead goals are spectaculare and great in my opinion..however van basten has scored 2 in his carreer??

    ronaldo has played 170 international games (97 NT,72 european cup,1 intercontinental cup) and has scored 99 goals...goal per game rate is 0.58...

    the sole job of a striker is contributing for goals..scoring greater goals is a argument.

    however this argument work in a debatte with a goalscorer,poacher (example) where plays the same amount (170 games ,scoring 99 goals)...so ronaldos greater goals has maybe a higher value in a debatte.....

    the argument doesent work against goalscorers like müller ...he had strenghts where has evened out some weakness .müller was not flashy enough, no fancy tricks, stepovers , not a great dribbler ..

    gerd müller has played 141 international games (62 NT,77 european cup,2 intercontinental cup) and has scored 138 goals..goal per game rate is 0.98....this is much better than ronaldos and one of the reason müller more often than ronaldo has scored crucial goals, important goals despisite playing fewer games...and müller has scored some times excellent goals too...

    i have checked 31 goals ronaldo he has scored in 72 european cup games..the other 5 goals i havent found video footage...only 1 of this 31 goals fell in category dribbling out 2 or more defenders...is this often you suggest?? 10 of this 31 goals was more or lesser tap in or little goals plus 3 penaltys...

    so how many great dribbling goals he has scored in 170 international games he has played?? 5 or more????let me know if you have information...

    müller has scored ca. 45 % of his teams goals in his 141 games he has played..ronaldo has scored ca. 28 % of his teams goals in his 170 games he has played.....

    müller did score 39 more goals than ronaldo in 29 fewer played games...and 1 goal sometimes is the difrense winning a game or not.....

    hypothetic müller playing the amount of 170 games (ronaldo did) he score about 167 goals..ca. 68 more goals than ronaldo same amount of games played..this is a huge diffrent...

    7 of ronaldos 99 goals was penalty goals....8 of müllers 138 goals was penalty goals

    müller did score goals in 77 games ( ca, 55 % of his 141 games)
    ronaldo did score goals in 67 games (ca. 40% of his 170 games)

    semifinal ecc 1976, bayern against real madrid 2:0..sec leg..videofootage of müllers 2 goals below..

    ((((bayern drew real madid in madrid 1:1, müllers scoring his teams goal..there is no footage..however müller outside of the box one and one beat real madrid defender benito and moved forward,real madrids keeper has challenged him outside of the 6 yard box..müller beat him with a precise shot..))))

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxZPetV4Crg"]YouTube - Müller vs Real Madrid (1976)[/ame]

    eurochampionscup final 1974..replay game...bayern-athletico madrid 4:0..müllers scoring 2 goals...

    lmüller hit the post with a nice header...look müllers pass for hoeness ..hoeness missed a open goal in this action..watch müllers first goal in this game..müller coming from deep own midfield has picked up kappelmans long pass and scored great from dificult angle in the cross..müller was the only the third choice option..müllers second goal a great loop..

    I personally find Muller's winner in the 74' WC final against Netherlands very good to watch, especially if it goes with some great music. The whole buildup including the run made by Bonhof, the pass to Muller, Muller's touch on it which seems too heavy, realization that Muller's touch takes the dutch defender out of reckoning for a split second and finally Muller's finish; all look pretty good.

    I wonder if any other player in football history has a better international goalscoring record. Maybe Puskas or Pele?
    Can't think of anybody else right now.

    Some oldtimers have a better GPG ratio

    Just Fontaine 1.43
    Gunnar Nordahl 1.30
    Sandor Kocsis 1.10

    Note that Today games average ~2.4 so approximately ...

    Nordhal (40-50) with average GPG 4.5 => GPG today = 0.71
    Juste Fontaine (50-60 average GPG 4) => GPG today = 0.87
    Kocsis (average 50-60 GPG 4) => GPG today = 0.67

    Muller late 60-early 70 GPG 2.8) => GPG today = 0.85

    Ronaldo is the only striker that could maintain his career GPG >0.7 since Muller of 1978

    I think by international goals, 621380 was talking about those scored for both country as well as for clubs when playing in international fixtures. I was talking about the same as well, since few players have stellar goalscoring records in both club and country international fixtures.

    It'd take a bit of work to calculate the figures for everyone (the top goalscoring players) in International Club competitions. I just had a look at Fontaine's 1958/59 European Cup figures - he got 10 goals in 9 games. Di Stefano might come into contention as his goalscoring rate in Internationals is actually pretty good too.

    Sure. It really wasn't my point to make any of those three stats look better than those of Müller, just wanted to answer his question.

    Van Basten and Romario have a GPG >0.7 if you count all their professional games.

    There you go (without adjustions to era and all games):

    Yeah my data were up to 2007 only and there Ronaldo got 0.71 (up to now due to injuries in Brazil on and off; his GPG will be suffered to <0.69)

    if you also counted NT goals, then Van Basten GPG would be 0.69

    Romario spent most time in Brazil so I was a bit hesitate to name his GPG as compared against the others in Europe. But if we accept that fact then Romario GPG is 0.71

    Any way your data are very good info, and yes Basten, Romario and Ronaldo should stand out in the crowd of great strikers of modern games - It will take sometimes to have anotehr could break their (about) 0.7GPG career.

    Where do you got you data from? Took his stats from wikipedia.

    218 in 280 for Milan and Ajax
    24 in 58 for Netherlands
    =
    242 / 338 = 0.7159

    Thanks comme, I'll add the points for the top 50 to the voting totals and add any of the next 50 that hadn't previously got points or honourable mentions, to the honourable mentions list. Would you like me to post a link in the greatest X of all-time thread (and do a quick analysis regarding the number of players from each position, goalkeepers to strikers, in your top 100)? I can also list your 100 by nationality and/or decade of birth if you like, either in this thread or as a post in your greatest X of all-time discussion.
    Anyway let me know what you think. I'll have the points added up fairly shortly...

    I actually gave him all his points myself (45th on my list) so nobody else has him in their top 50. You understand that each voter only names 50 players to give points to? Feel free to add your vote of course. The post with all the names and points on is the accumulation of the 20 votes so far just to clarify (maybe you already understood this but you wouldn't if you've not read the thread from the start). Thanks.
