I've lost respect for the Kirschners. When Nestor Kirschner came to power, the country had hit bottom, thanks to the ineptitude of his predecessors, and could only go up. So the people supported them, and they had a great opportunity to unite the country and move forward. Even though he is ideologically to the left of where I am, I thought he was intelligent and pragmatic, and I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and wish him success, for the good of the country.

But recently, with their authocratic style and arrogance, as well as heavy handed tactics against their opponents and anybody who speaks out against them, they have squandered their political capital. Now, if we believe the polls, they are even more unpopular than George Bush. And we know how unpopular he is.

As far as the Agro situation, I haven't followed it too closely, but from a distance it looks to me like another attempt at a money grab by the Kirschners.

The unfortunate thing is that given world demand for food and rising prices, this should be a prosperous time for Argentina and in particularly the agro sector. But because of this idiotic domestic dispute, they are not able to take advantage of the historic international opportunity. The government is fighting the food producers, and the country is left spinning its wheels in neutral.

Typical of Argentina. Great country but the government sucks.

The problem is that the farmers don't agree with the rise on the tax for exportation, specially in the soy, a thing relatively useless in Argentina, also should be noted though soy is expensive it requires less workmanship than cotton or wheat for example. Now one could wonder how many politicians don't have a field anywhere? Probably few, so now it's just an economical push.
While the rise in the tax for exportation would benefit argentines in general, because then we wouldn't be paying international prices, yet some people seems to blindly support the farmers ignoring that detail. Probably the way this issue was faced by Cristina was a mistake, yet the media is all about boot-licking but no information, guess not even pro-Kirchner dare to remind certain stuff and about "La Sociedad Rural".

I've been watching this from afar (crisis del campo). The president and her husband are communists at heart. Basicallly communism is a return to aristocracy and a land grab by the government (land reassignment).

It is common knowledge that Karl Marx was funded by the royals in Europe to raise up the workers against the major capitalists that were taking over Europe from the Royal families.

Getting back to Argentina, the Kirchners with their communist agenda basically are working for a stronger power in this case the internationals (farm growers).

In Argentina 90-95% of the land is owned by these Internationals (Argentine or foreign) and the remaining 5-10% is owned by your average farmer. The Kirchner move is meant to destabilize these 5-10% of farmers for the overall benefit of the larger corporations.

It is also meant to lower the production of the Argentine economy.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Has anyone read about the Argentine debt lately? The supposed debt now is greater than what it was originally when Nestor took over the country. Worse yet is that it is set up at a higher percentage. Where? Why? When?

I guess that we are getting used to having the wool pull over our eyes.

The production wasn't supposed to shrink, it was supposed that the tax income would raise. But anyway the resolution was rejected by the senators so now the taxes for exportation go back to what they were in March, at least for now. Now for some who said we were drowning in chaos it's all pink coloured, nice way to swing moods. I don't think land assignment had anything to do with this. Also average farmers had no representation on the issue, because De Angelis and co. don't represent the medium and small producers.

I do think these problems happen because as of now inside the government there isn't a decent opposition, so they don't know how to handle these issues.

Yeah, it was rejected, and it was a huge political loss for the Kirschners.

When the Kirschners raised the tax to 35 percent gross, the producers ate it, because they obviously must be making some money. But the last move was too much. Even if one submits to the idea that the rich should be overtaxed in order to help the poor, 50 percent of gross was excessive. The agro said no, because they just couldn't do what the Kirschner's wanted and stay in business, and be able to compete with other nations in the export market.

Besides, the agro is not just the super rich oligarchs who make an easy target, as it was some years ago. Nowadays there are a lot of small farmers who are now in the export business, and for the good of the country we need to give them incentive to export, not take all their money.

True, but this with the ending this has it has benefited the farmers even more than before, simply because the international price of soy raised because Argentina wasn't exporting, so they'll get more profit than before.

Then again soy itself is a more complicated debate, which shouldn't be delayed, the effects of soy on the land, how does it help or add jobless people, etc.

Time will tell. As of now, in general it's seen as a positive thing that they will be changing some faces, specially they are awaiting for Guillermo Moreno and maybe De Vido to go, and it would be better if they leave. It isn't clear if he resigned for the failure with the project for the exportation taxes increase or what it was. Sergio Massa will replace Alberto Fernandez. Different scenario would have been if Cobos would have resigned, it doesn't seem like such will happen for now.

Once again it's interesting to see the mood swings, with Cobos it was like he was a piece of furniture, suddenly he became a hero. Alberto Fernandez wasn't exactly a good man before, and now he is a "gladiator".

The Kirschners are at least closer to the Peronist political line than that even bigger of a thief Menem. There's just something completely wrong with a picture when you have major assets such as Aerolineas Argentinas, major oil and gas resources being sold off to transnational corporations at bargain bin prices, a fraction of the actual cost.
