------------------- COLUMBUS CREW PRESS RELEASE CREW RE-SIGNS 2008 MLS DEFENDER OF THE YEAR CHAD MARSHALL Black & Gold locks up one of its brightest young stars with multi-year commitment For Immediate Release: Friday, December 26, 2008 Contact: Dave Stephany, 614-447-4190, or Jason Smith, 614-447-4176 COLUMBUS, Ohio - The MLS Cup-champion Columbus Crew announced today that it has re-signed Chad Marshall to a multi-year contract, keeping the 2008 MLS Defender of the Year in Black & Gold. No further terms of the deal were disclosed. Originally drafted by the Crew No. 2 overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, the 6-4, 190-pound Riverside, Calif., native has been widely regarded as one of the league's top defenders since his rookie campaign, when he was a finalist for MLS Rookie of the Year honors. The 24-year old Marshall returned from an injury-shortened 2007 season with a career year in 2008. He started 29 games and ranked second on the team in minutes played, with 2,485, helping the Crew capture the Supporters' Shield, awarded to the team that finishes with the best regular season record (17-7-6, 57 points). Anchored by Marshall, the Crew's defense allowed the third fewest goals in the league (36), behind only the Houston Dynamo (32) and the Chicago Fire (33). On the offensive end, he contributed four regular-season goals and two more in the playoffs. On the strength of his spectacular season, Marshall was voted the 2008 Visa Defender of the Year, awarded to the defender who earns the most votes in polling in polling of MLS players, general managers, coaches, and members of the media. Marshall became the second player in Crew history to win the prestigious league award, joining only Robin Fraser who won it after Marshall's rookie season of 2004 when the two played alongside one another. "We have made a significant commitment to ensure that Chad remains a member of the Crew and we are very pleased to have gotten that priority accomplished," said Crew technical director Brian Bliss. "It goes without saying that he played a vital role in our championship season and re-signing him allows us to retain our core group of key contributors." After a series of concussions forced him to miss 17 games in 2007 and left his career in jeopardy, Marshall made a stunning return to full fitness and form in 2008. Refocused and renewed by his forced time away from the game, he returned with vigor to his regular spot on the backline. A big, athletic defender, Marshall consistently frustrated the efforts of the opposition's attack - thanks to his aerial dominance and well-timed tackles - while only earning two yellow card cautions all season. Marshall also consistently utilized his size and leaping ability to get on the end of set pieces and his four goals (three of which were game-winners) ranked second in the league among defenders. The 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs served to further showcase Marshall's abilities, as he was one of only three players to score multiple goals during the playoff campaign, while leading a Crew defense that allowed only three goals in four games. The 2008 MLS Cup proved to be a storybook ending for Marshall, as his header goal off a Guillermo Barros Schelotto corner kick in the 53rd minute proved to be the match's game-winner, giving the Black & Gold its first-ever MLS Cup championship. Founded by American sports pioneer Lamar Hunt, the Columbus Crew is Ohio's Major League Soccer club, anchoring a diverse sports and entertainment enterprise. One of the league's Charter Members, it is currently the reigning MLS Cup Champion and it has also won the 2002 U.S. Open Cup championship and MLS Supporters' Shield titles in 2004 and 2008. It recently concluded its 13th season overall and 10th in first-of-its-kind Columbus Crew Stadium. guppy, for as much as you've been wrong in the Rivalries forum, you really don't deserve to exist any more.
