Just the annual heads-up to the programs dragging their feet on announcing their recruits, our annual Shit List of apathetic programs that don't give a fu(k about their new players or promoting their sport is coming soon and you don't want to be on it. I chose the beginning of April because it's a full two months since the start of official signing period and that should be plenty of time to get your ducks in a row for an announcement (I'd like to think this is axiomatic) and I chose the 2nd, specifically, because it's a Friday and thus the end of the business week. There are some surprising schools that are in Shit List contention this year with Maryland being the most obvious along with the usual suspects of Just Don't Care schools like UConn, St. John's, San Diego, Boston College and Pitt. Here are the list of schools that have announced new players so far. Let's hope this list grows considerably between now and then, as of last night. Isn't April 2nd a Wednesday? Not to detract from your great message, but someone is bound to call you out on it not being a Friday ...
Shocking that some of the NCAA's highest profile programs have not yet announced their respective recruiting classes. They are waiting for... what exactly? Understood that additional players can (and will) be announced later on in the year. The citing of which is entirely missing the point. This is an inexpensive PR opportunity that some schools are neglecting to take.
I love this "list" Sandon! Good work. A good chuckle from this poster. A variety of things weigh into the decision(s) in releasing: Finalizing recruits SID issues Athletic department issues Finalizing returners (i.e., scholarships available) Numerous more Not saying any are the "right" ones. Not saying they are "good" reasons either. I know some schools don't even write anything about ANY recruits committing. It happens. But, like you mentioned, it's an inexpensive PR opportunity...
If the Shit List came out today, 98 schools would be on it. That's just below half of all the teams in D-I. That's just embarrassing for men's soccer.
OK, as it often does, curiosity got the better of me. I looked up the women’s programs from the schools from the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, American Athletic and Conference USA - in other words, the bigger schools - whose men’s programs have not announced. There are 19 schools from those conferences whose men's programs haven't announced. Of those 19, 14 of their women's program had announced recruits. So it certainly appears the women's coaches, for the most part, don't suffer from the malaise and apathy of the men's coaches. Here are the 19. Boston College – women announced on 2/25 Charlotte – women announced on 2/10 Connecticut – not announced DePaul – women announced on 2/6 Duke – women announced on 2/19 Florida Atlantic – women announced on 2/5 Florida International – women announced on 3/3 Kentucky – women announced on 2/14 Maryland – not announced Ohio State – women announced on 2/10 Penn State – women announced on 2/5 Pitt – women announced on 2/13 Providence – women announced on 2/10 Rutgers – not announced Temple – women announced on 3/3 St. John’s – not announced Seton Hall – women announced on 3/12 Wisconsin – not announced Xavier – women announced on 2/18 Someone else is welcome to look up the other 79 programs.
And lest we think this is an East Coast phenomenon, here are the results from the “western” conferences (Big West, WCC and WAC, plus Denver – all the Pac-12 men have announced) whose men’s programs haven’t announced their new players. There are 12 schools from the 3 western-ish conferences (plus Denver) whose men’s programs haven’t announced and 8 of them have had their women announce. They are: Cal State Bakersfield – women announced 3/10 Cal State Fullerton – women announced 2/10 Cal State Northridge – not announced Denver - women announced 2/14 Houston Baptist – women announced 2/5 and 3/3 Incarnate Word – not announced Saint Mary’s – women announced 12/10 (early arrivals), 3/5 and 3/20 San Diego – women announced 2/17 San Francisco – women announced 2/10 UC Irvine – not announced UC Riverside – not announced UMKC – women announced 2/8 So that’s 31 programs checked where the men hadn’t announced and of those, 22 had seen their women do so. This tells us the women’s coaches are more proactive and about promoting their programs and their sport and that not announcing can’t be blamed on the SID because clearly the department is writing the release when they have the information available to them. I’m guessing that if we checked the remaining 67 schools whose men’s programs haven’t announced their new players we’d find a similar ratio (about 2/3) where the women’s programs at the same school had announced.
well, that assumes that all of the women's teams from schools whose men's teams have announced, did announce themselves as well.
You are more than welcome to look that up. I suspect there are some women's programs at schools with men's programs that have announced that are just as lackadaisical about this as schools like San Diego and Boston College are on the men's side. But that just goes to show that it's up to the coaches, which is why we harp on the coaches for being the ambivalent slackers. Every year when the Shit List comes out some fan of one of the schools on it makes the argument that its not the coaches but the SID. I'm merely pointing out that these announcements by the women's programs suggests its the coaches and not the SIDs.
Sandon - last year, in 2013, you published "the list" on May 2. I have what I think is a pretty good idea of why you have decided to move the publication of "the list" up a month this year, but thought it would be worth hearing from you directly on your reasons for the month earlier publication. So can you please share with us your thinking on the earlier release of your "list?"
Because two months should be more than enough time to get your recruits announced and there's no excuse not to have put out a release yet.
Please list the WSOC programs, from schools whose MSOC programs have announced, that have not announced their 2014 recruiting classes.
i don't care enough about either list to do the work. i was just pointing out the selectivity of the sample.
Sandon - just to clarify, the list is being published on Friday, April 4? I got up early this morning specifically to check the list .
Yes, my apologies for not clarifying. It will be done Friday afternoon. I messed up the original date. I'm sorry for messing up your morning.
It's now 8PM, I'm starting to question your commitment to fry that arrogant ass Ray Reid for being a petulant prick!
