Could Dempsey be left off the World Cup team?

he should be a sub this time around.. he's far too slow. On the flanks we need immense speed to take anything from Portual or Germany. Instead of Dempsey, we need Adu on the CAM position and Agudelo up top.

Hasn't been a problem in the last two weeks. He's never been about speed, and that hasn't hurt him.

    He starts.

Can't believe the Adu thing hasn't died.

I can go one better. I say we close this thread. Dempsey looked like a beast against Mexico, and he's really recovering his form in MLS.

One can still make an argument whether Dempsey starts every match, but the idea of him being left off the Brazil 23? No way.

Idk if I'd say beast. But he is recovering form.

I wouldn't close the thread. The intital premise was stupid. He wasn't gonna be left off the real debate in this thread is: should he still be considered a lock starter? Should he be a full 90?

This and the Jozy thread should have had their title changed from the start.

This is ridiculous, Dempsey is the most creative player we have and he best long distance scoring threat and free kick threat. There is no way the US advances without Dempsey on there.

Dempsey has always been a late scorer who plays 90'. Plus, he grew up in Texas.

What does Texas have to do with anything?

And he had always been a player that played 90 but his form for 6 months was poor very very poor. Yet he still started and played 90 for the USA. Especially when they were others in better form that deserved a look (friendlies at the very least). So the debate was should he still be a starter or if he is should he finish the game.

The person I quoted was saying the thread should have been locked cause the titles premise is stupid but my point is while the title is stupid the real debate was something else and that it should have been renamed not closed.

Yeah, just as I feared. (Bolded part). You'll see when your man Timmy takes the pitch in Manaus.

I understand your point. My point would be that Dempsey is somebody who has shown, over a long career, that he can step up in the late stages of a game and be a difference maker. There are many great players who just cant play 90. Jozy will be done in 65'. Zusi and Jones tire at about the same time going box to box at the international level and Brazil will be extra tough. There are 3 subs total. Using one up on Dempsey may not be the best idea. You are welcome to your opinion. We just differ, that's all.

I don't think Dempsey is a 90 minutes player, in fact, most of his scoring for the nats have been done in the first half.

He's had an excellent 2nd half in the last two games he's played.

I thought we were talking about his scoring for the USMNT games.

We can... He scores a lot more goals in the second half with the national team then you suggest.

I checked and looks like in the last 18 months he has scored more goals in the first half.

You said you didn't think Dempsey is a 90 minute player, and he scores most of his goals for the nats in the first half. Out of his 36 goals for the Nats, 16 of them are in the second half. That's almost 45 %, and more goals then almost our entire player pool in just the second half. He scores a lot more late in games then you implied.

Will Dempsey be a starter in 2018 or sub? I think he's a sub then, and someone like Flores or Gil will take over his CAM role.

I don't think he or LD will be playing in 2018 - retired from the international game. Treasure this last world cup for them both.

I haven't read this thread, but I'm sure it's full of ridiculousness.

I was a bit worried about Dempsey after his terrible loan spell with Fulham. But I was confident he'd turn it around. And he has done a complete 180. He's playing with the confidence he had in 2012. Hopefully he can keep it going through July.

I thought the argument was Dempsey scores more in the early game than the later part of games, I told you he was early, and then you come back with "if by going that far back you mean yesterday", how old are you?
