Costa Rica - Argentina could be the play-off match will decide if CONCACAF gets 4 teams or if CONMEBOL gets 5 teams in the next world cup in South Africa. How can we understand a team like Costa Rica was the first in the HEX before the 2009 Gold Cup, a team which has been semifinalist in this Gold Cup and now in september, Costa Rica is currently 4th???? And what about Argentina? It's 5th in the CONMEBOL qualifying. It's the first time since 1993 that Argentina is in danger! So Costa Rica - Argentina is possible! But also we could have other play-off matches. For example : Honduras-Vénézuela, Honduras-Argentina, Costa Rica-Vénézuela, Costa Rica - Ecuador or Honduras-Ecuador. My question is : "Will a CONCACAF team strong enough to pass the play-off against a South American team?
Honduras and Mexico are the only ones who can match up with most CONMEBOL side right now, and both are likely to finish top of the group. The US could match up with Colombia and a few others, but don´t have a good (recent) record down south, and would almost certainly lose the away leg. We would have little to no chance unless there´s some drastic change.
