I have adapted. I went for seeing them as having potential and wishing them well to seeing them as a marketing ploy and hoping they fail.
SEASON TICKETS, ANYONE? New York Cosmos fans can place deposits for 2013 North American Soccer League season tickets at nycosmos.com beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday. This would give fans priority benefits, including preferred seat selection at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. and purchase access before the general public sale. Fans can put down a $50 deposit. Cosmos COO Erik Stover said fans will get a priority number to select seats at Shuart Stadium. Stover said there is no specific target as to how many season tickets the club wants to sell. "We haven't put a number on it," he said on Wednesday. "We're very optimisitc. Every meeting we've taken [with fans] we've had a tremendous amount of support."
Also be sure that they explain their refund policy if they don't play any games or the half season clearly before you buy (though I don't know why you'd buy at this point anyway. They won't be filling Hofstra so tickets should be plentiful).
One (only?) of the good things about the hole joining at the fall season and skipping the spring season is that they will only play 8 home games so they will probably have larger crowds than if they played the full split season with 16 home games.
I've seen this statement that 8 games will mean bigger crowds several times now. No offense to anyone, but I don't really buy that. If the team is that great and the fans eagerly awaiting their return then why wouldn't it be full for a complete season? I just don't buy it - sorry. And this is from a fan of the Cosmos of old who wants to see this group succeed.
Well, it may not mean significantly more crowds, but the idea is that there are less dates for the same amount of fans to choose from (after accounting for season tickets and partial plans, in other words the walk-up crowd), there will be more of those fans showing up per game. It's just a mathematical fact, not really implying that there will be more demand as a result of less games.
I understand the idea. I just don't think it's a guarantee that more fans will show up. I hope it works out that way, but I don't think it's a fact mathematically speaking.

You're not very good at math. It's a mathematical fact that there will be less ticket inventory. Demand for said tickets is a different matter.
Let's say 6000 people have decided to go to exactly one Cosmos game this year, on the week that is most convenient to them. If they have 10 games to choose from, on average 600 of them will show up per game. If they have 5 games to choose from, on average 1200 of them will show up per game. You can extend the example for people who want go to to exactly two or three or four games, and alter the numbers to account for marketing, price, team record, notable players, weather, what have you. Of course its simplistic and that factor could be tiny compared to everything else, but that's all that's being said. I don't think anyone sane takes it to mean the attendance will be double what it would normally have been. I also don't think that the fact that there's half as many games means there will be half as many people going to exactly 1, 2, or 3 games next year.
*This is a ticket package request ONLY. Simply place a $50 deposit regardless of the number of seats you are considering and your account will be established in seniority. Deposits are non-refundable and must be applied toward a 2013 ticket purchase. Deposits do not guarantee or imply tickets will be available for purchase in depositor's preferred season or mini plan package type or preferred seating location. Deposit seniority will only apply when selecting a ticket plan for the 2013 Fall Championship and cannot be carried over for a 2014 purchase unless combined with the 2013 Fall Championship.
Those Cosmos sure are innovators. Implementing a 'less is more' marketing strategy, genius! They'd better not schedule any friendlies; it'll throw the whole mathematical equation out of whack.
What exactly is a preferred season? Is that double-speak for "if we don't play any games this season?".
